Xiaomi Redmi 8 is one of the most popular budget smartphones, but MIUI updates don't always benefit. The new version of Android can slow down, drain the battery faster or break compatibility with applications. If you encounter problems after the upgrade, don't rush to carry the phone to the service. In 90% of cases, you can roll back the firmware yourself, even without experience with Fastboot or ADB.
In this article, we've tried three proven methods of rollback updates to Redmi 8 (codenamed olive), including official and informal methods.
- ๐ How to bring back the old version MIUI Recovery (without data loss)
- ๐ฅ Reverse Fastboot with full flashing (for power users)
- ๐ ๏ธ Use of the MIUI Downgrade Tool โ automatic script for beginners
- โ ๏ธ Risks and how to avoid a โbrickโ (turning a phone into a โbrick")
Important: the procedure differs from the rollback on other Xiaomi models (for example, Redmi Note 8 Pro or POCO X3). All instructions are adapted specifically for Redmi 8, taking into account its hardware features (Snapdragon 439 processor, dynamic partition type in new firmware).
1.Preparation for rollback: what to do before the beginning
First rule: rolling back firmware is not "cancel upgrades." You don't just return the old version, you reinstall it on top of the new one.
- ๐ฑ All data can be erased (depending on the method)
- ๐ The bootloader must be unlocked (if you use Fastboot)
- ๐ Battery charge: at least 60% (process interruption) = brick-and-mortar)
What to do right now:
- Download Mi Flash Tool (the official Xiaomi utility) from en.miui.com.
- Check the current version of MIUI in Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version. Write it down (you can use it to choose the right firmware).
- Create a backup through Settings โ Additional โ Backup and Reset or manually copy files to your PC.
โ ๏ธ Note: If your Redmi 8 was purchased in China (suffix version) CN), A rollback to global firmware (Global) can block the network. Check the model in Settings โ The phone. โ Model (should be) M1908C3IG global version).
2. Method 1: Recovery (without data loss)
The safest method is to use stock Recovery, which is suitable if:
- ๐น You've been updated by air" (OTA), Not through Fastboot.
- ๐น Want to save user data (photos, messages, applications)
- ๐น Phone is not locked (no message is "This") MIUI version cannot be installed")
Step-by-step:
- Download the full firmware (not downloaded) OTA-bundle!) for your model from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater.Look for a file with the.zip extension and the Recovery tag.
- Rename the file to update.zip and move it to the root of the phoneโs internal memory (not folders!).
- Turn off the phone. Press Volume up + Power to enter Recovery.
- Select the language, then Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm installation. Once completed, select Reboot to System.
If you've had your phone hanging on the MI logo after you restart, don't panic. Give it 10-15 minutes (it can take a while to start the first time after you roll back), if it's still the same after 20 minutes, repeat the procedure or try another method.
โ๏ธ Checklist before rollback via Recovery
3. Method 2: Full rollback via Fastboot (for experienced)
This method will erase all the data on the phone, but it's guaranteed to work even if the Recovery method doesn't work.
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Windows computer (Linux/Mac informally)
- ๐ Cable USB (original, undamaged)
- ๐ Unlocked bootloader (if not unlocked โ see the instructions below)
Instructions:
- Download Fastboot firmware for Redmi 8 (file.tgz or.zip from the official website. Unpack the archive in a folder without Cyrillic (for example, C:\redmi8_fastboot).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and Qualcomm drivers (come with the utility).
- Turn off the phone. Press Volume down + Power to enter the Fastboot (a hare in a hat-eared hat will appear).
- Connect your phone to your PC. In the Mi Flash Tool, click Select, specify the firmware folder, then Refresh (should appear) COM-port).
- Select Clean All mode and press Flash. The process will take 5-10 minutes.
If the Mi Flash Tool is a critical partition flashing error, it is not allowed:
- ๐น Try another version of the utility (for example, MiFlash20200422 last).
- ๐น Turn off driver signature verification in Windows (via gpedit.msc).
- ๐น Use custom Recovery (TWRP) โ see method 3.
โ ๏ธ Note: If the phone doesn't turn on after you've been firmwareed through Fastboot (black screen, no logo vibration), it can be a hard brick. EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account or box for repairs).
What to do if the Mi Flash Tool can't see your phone?
Method 3: Automatic rollback with MIUI Downgrade Tool
For those who are afraid of the command line, there's a semi-automatic tool called the MIUI Downgrade Tool, which downloads the right firmware and rolls back through Fastboot.
- ๐ค You donโt have to manually search for firmware.
- ๐ Supports rollbacks to several versions back
- ๐ก๏ธ Minimizes the risk of errors (checks compatibility)
How to use:
- Download the utility with XDA Developers (check reviews for the latest version!).
- Unpack the archive and launch it. MIUI_Downgrade_Tool.exe on behalf of the administrator.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (as in method 2).
- Select the Redmi 8 (olive) and MIUI target version from the list.
- Press Downgrade and wait until it is completed (the phone will reboot automatically).
Tool limitations:
- ๐ซ Does not work with a blocked loader
- ๐ซ Does not support rollback on Android 9 Android 10/11 (Only within one version of Android)
- ๐ซ You may not find a firmware for rare regions (for example, IN โ India)
๐ก
If the MIUI Downgrade Tool doesnโt see your model, try manually specifying the codename olive in the configuration file (config folder in the utility archive).
5. Unlock the bootloader on Redmi 8 (if required)
Without an unlocked bootloader, you wonโt be able to flash your phone through Fastboot. Xiaomi officially lets you unlock the bootloader, but the process takes 7 days of waiting (if the account is new).
Step-by-step:
- Link your Mi Account to your phone in Settings โ Xiaomi account.
- Enable Developer Options (7 times click on the MIUI version in About Phone).
- Activate OEM Unlock and USB Debugging in the Developer Menu.
- Download Mi Unlock Tool from the official website.
- Launch the utility, log in to your account, and connect your phone in Fastboot mode. Press Unlock.
If you have a Cann't unlock error:
- ๐น Wait 7 days (if the account is new) or 30 days (if the bootloader was previously blocked).
- ๐น Check that SIM-The card in the phone is tied to the same region as the firmware.
- ๐น Try another PC or Mi Unlock Tool version (e.g. 3.5.501.33).
โ ๏ธ Warning: Once the bootloader is unlocked, all data, including photos in the internal memory, will be deleted from the phone, and anti-rollback protection may also work if you try to put the firmware older than the one that was originally installed. In this case, the phone will turn into a brick without the possibility of recovery.
6. Solving errors after rollback
Even if the rollback is successful, there may be problems, and the most common ones are the solutions.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Phone not turned on (black screen) | Incorrect firmware or interrupted process | Repeat the firmware via Fastboot with the correct version of MIUI |
| Constant reboots (bootloop) | Conflict between bootloader and firmware versions | Sweep only boot.img from old firmware through Fastboot |
| No network (IMEI invalid) | Deleted modem or nvram partition | Restore the IMEI through the SN Writer Tool (backup required) |
| Camera or sensors are not working. | There are no drivers in the firmware | Install a Magisk module for your model or swipe persist.img |
If Google services (Play Market, Gmail) are missing after the rollback:
- Download NikGapps (Google Apps for MIUI) from nikgapps.com.
- Fastboot (fastboot flash system nikgapps.zip) or TWRP (if installed).
๐ก
If the phone is unstable after rollback (lagging, warming), reset to factory settings via Settings โ Additional โ Backup and Reset. This will delete the residual files of the old firmware.
7. How to avoid problems with future updates
So that you do not have to roll back the firmware again, follow these rules:
- ๐ Before updating, check the reviews on the forums (for example, 4PDA or MIUI EU).
- ๐ Do not update in the first 2 weeks after the release of a new version (usually come out hot patches).
- ๐ Keep an eye on the battery level during the upgrade (minimum 50%).
- ๐ Use custom firmware (for example, MIUI EU or Pixel Experience, if stock MIUI never-quiet.
If you are still trying to update, but are afraid of problems:
- Make a backup of NVRAM (partition with IMEI and network settings) through TWRP.
- Save the current firmware in.zip format (in case of rollback).
- Use OrangeFox Recovery instead of the standard one โ it can create full system backups.
