Xiaomi Redmi 7, released in 2019, is still a popular budget smartphone due to its reliable hardware and support for updates. However, with the release of new versions of MIUI and Android, owners are faced with the question: how to update the device correctly to avoid data loss, avoid errors and get maximum performance? In this article, we will analyze all the current methods of updating, including official and alternative, taking into account the features of Redmi 7 (codename onc).
It is important to understand that the upgrade process depends on the current firmware version, the region of the device and even the way it is purchased (global or Chinese version). OTA-Upgrade, but also manual methods through Recovery or Fastboot, and give tips on preparing your smartphone for the procedure. If you have never previously updated Xiaomi yourself โ do not worry: the instructions are adapted for beginners, with step-by-step screenshots and explanations.
1. Preparing the smartphone for the update: 7 mandatory steps
Before you start upgrading Redmi 7, you need to do a few critical things, and neglecting them can lead to data loss, a device blink, or a new firmware malfunction, starting with the most important thing: backup.
Back up all your important data: contacts, photos, messages and apps.
- ๐ฑ Use the built-in Settings function โ System and device โ Backup (MIUI Backup).
- โ๏ธ Upload files to the cloud: Google Drive, Mi Cloud or Yandex Disk.
- ๐ป Connect your smartphone to your PC and copy files manually (folders) DCIM, Downloads, WhatsApp).
Then check the battery power, it should be at least 60%. Upgrade via Recovery or Fastboot can take up to 30 minutes, and the discharge in the process is fraught with failures. Also make sure that the device has enough free space: to upgrade through OTA requires a minimum of 1.5-2 GB of free space.
Check the version of MIUI in Settings โ About the phone
Create a backup copy of the data
Charge the battery to 60% or more
Free up 2 GB of memory
Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network
Disable VPN and antiviruses
Remember the password from the Mi Account (if tied)-->
If your Redmi 7 is linked to your Mi Account, remember your login and password โ after a reset or manual update, you may need to log in. Otherwise, the device will be locked (Mi Cloud Lock), which is especially true for Chinese versions of smartphones.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you use unofficial firmware (such as LineageOS or Pixel Experience), upgrade using standard methods. MIUI This can cause the bootloader to break down, and you need to flash it through the Fastboot completely.
Method 1: Automatic Air Update (OTA)
The simplest and safest method is the Over-The-Air update, which is suitable for most users and does not require technical skills, but it has limitations: OTA is only available for official firmware and can come with a delay depending on the region.
To check for updates:
- Open the Settings. โ The phone.
- Tap on the item System Update (or MIUI version in older versions).
- Click Check for updates.
- If the update is available, click Download and wait for the download to complete.
- After downloading, select Install Now or Install Later.
If the update is not available, the following reasons are possible:
- ๐ Your region has not yet received an update (e.g. global version) MIUI Global updated later in China MIUI China).
- ๐ The device is unlocked or has an unofficial firmware.
- ๐ถ Connection problems with Xiaomi servers (try using them) VPN or switch Wi-Fi).
If OTA-Update is available, but not installed (hangs during the check or download stage), try it:
- Reboot the smartphone.
- Clear the cache of the application System Update in Settings โ Applications.
- Connect to another Wi-Fi network or use mobile internet.
๐ก
Automatic updates via OTA are the safest way, but it only works for official firmware and may not be available in some regions.
Method 2: Manual installation via Recovery
If OTA is not available or you want to install a specific version of MIUI, you can manually upgrade through Recovery, which is suitable for official firmware in.zip format and requires minimal technical skills, the main advantage is that you control the firmware version and can roll back if necessary.
To start, download the necessary firmware from the official Xiaomi website:
- Go to the MIUI Downloads page.
- Select the Redmi 7 (onc) model.
- Download the stable or development version for your region (Global, China, EEA).
- The file must have a name of the type miui_ONCGlobal_V12.5.3.0.QFLMIXM_... (where ONC โ codename 7).
After downloading:
- Move the.zip file to the root folder of the smartphoneโs internal memory (not to the folder!).
- Then go to Settings โ About Phone โ System Update.
- Slap the icon. โฎ (three dots) in the upper right corner and select Select the update file.
- Specify the downloaded file and confirm the installation.
If this method does not work (for example, the system says โCan not check the updateโ), you will have to install the firmware through Recovery manually:
- Turn off your smartphone.
- Press Volume Up + Power before the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select the language (if available) and Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm the installation and wait until the completion (usually 5-10 minutes).
โ ๏ธ Note: If you install firmware for another region (for example, China on the global version), after the update, Google services (Play Market, Gmail, etc.) may disappear.
| Type of firmware | Region | Download link | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable | Global | Download | Supports Google Services, Updates Less Often |
| Stable | China | Download | Without Google Services, Updates Are Coming Early |
| Developer | Global/China | Download | Weekly updates, possible bugs |
| Fastboot | Anybody. | Download | Requires unlocking the loader |
Method 3: Update via Fastboot (for power users)
The Fastboot method is the most reliable, but it's also the most complex, and it's suitable if:
- ๐ง Your Redmi 7 has โblockedโ after a failed update.
- ๐ You want to switch from Chinese firmware to global (or vice versa).
- ๐ ๏ธ You need to restore the smartphone after a failure.
This method will require:
- ๐ป Computer with installed Xiaomi drivers and Mi Flash Tool.
- ๐ Cable USB (preferably original).
- ๐ Firmware in.tgz or.zip format for Fastboot.
- ๐ Unlocked bootloader (if you install an informal firmware).
Step-by-step:
- Download and install the Mi Flash Tool.
- Unpack the archive with firmware in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\MIUI\onc_global).
- Turn off your smartphone and put it in Fastboot mode: Press Volume down + Power.
- Connect Redmi 7 to your PC. Android Bootloader Interface should appear in the Device Manager.
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the folder with the firmware.
- Select firmware mode: Clean all - complete clean (deletes all data!), Clean all and lock - clean + lock bootloader. Save user data - save data (does not always work).
Flash
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you choose Clean all and lock, the bootloader will lock and further firmware manipulation will require re-unlocking via the Mi Unlock Tool. This can take up to 720 hours (30 days) of waiting!
What to do if the Mi Flash Tool is in error?
After successful firmware, the smartphone will automatically restart. The first turn on can take up to 10 minutes - do not interrupt the process! If the device has hung on the Mi logo for more than 20 minutes, try flashing it again through Fastboot or contact the service center.
5. Method 4: Update through Custom Recovery (TWRP)
If you use unofficial firmware (LineageOS, Pixel Experience, Havoc-OS), custom Recovery, such as TWRP, will be required to update them. This method is also suitable for installing modified versions of MIUI (for example, MIUI EU or MIUI Pro).
Advantages of TWRP:
- ๐ The ability to create a full backup system (Nandroid backup).
- ๐ง Install any.zip firmware, including patches and mods.
- ๐ Easy retracement to the previous version.
To update through TWRP:
- Download the current version of TWRP for Redmi 7 (onc) from twrp.me.
- Install. TWRP Fastboot: Fastboot Flash Recovery twrp-3.7.0_9-0-onc.img fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-onc.img

- After installation, swipe GApps (if required) and Magisk (for root rights).
- Reboot to the system (Reboot โ System).
Important: Installing custom firmware will void warranty and may cause unstable smartphone performance.Be sure before the procedure that the firmware is compatible with the Redmi 7 model (codename onc).
๐ก
If the mobile network does not work after installing custom firmware, check the APN settings or install a patch for the modem via TWRP.
6. Method 5: Update via PC (Mi Suite)
Official Mi Suite (formerly Mi) PC Suite) allows you to update Xiaomi firmware through your computer, which is convenient if you do not have stable Wi-Fi or OTA-However, Mi Suite often offers outdated firmware versions, so check the relevance before installing.
Instructions:
- Download and install Mi Suite from the official website.
- Connect Redmi 7 to your PC via USB-cable (turn on debugging by USB In Settings โ For developers).
- Run the Mi Suite and wait for the device to be determined.
- Go to the Update tab.
- If a new firmware is available, click Update and follow the instructions.
