Xiaomi Poco X3 is one of the most popular smartphones in the Poco lineup, but even it requires regular updates to keep things running smoothly.Firmware updates not only add new features, but also fix critical security vulnerabilities, improve performance and optimize power consumption. However, many users face challenges ranging from lack of notifications for new versions to installation errors.
In this article, weโll take a look at all the available upgrades, from standard OTA to manual firmware via Fastboot and Recovery, how to check the current version of MIUI, where to download official firmware, and what to do if the update has โhangedโ or crashed, and unique tips for saving data before updating and restoring the system in case of a crash.
Important: The upgrade procedure on the Poco X3 (M2007J20CG and M2007J20CI models) has nuances related to the MIUI version (Global, EEA, India) and bootloader status. If you have previously unlocked the bootloader or installed custom firmware, some steps may differ.
1.Preparation for the update: what to do before the start
Before you start upgrading, be sure to follow these steps โ they will help you avoid data loss or โbrickingโ the device. Even if you upgrade through a standard OTA, the backup will not hurt.
- ๐ฑ Check the model and version MIUI: Go to Settings. โ Remember or take a picture of the Version. MIUI, Build number and Device Model (must match firmware!).
- ๐ Charge the battery to a minimum of 60%.When upgrading via Recovery or Fastboot, 100% is recommended, as the process can take up to 30 minutes.
- ๐ก Connect to stable Wi-Fi. Update "over the airยป (OTA) Weighs 1.5 to 3GB โ Mobile traffic canโt take it.
- ๐ Make a backup: Use Settings โ Additionally. โ Backup and reset or third-party utilities like Swift Backup (requires root).
Pay special attention to the version MIUI. For example, if you have a set MIUI Global 12.5.3, a) Update is available to 13.0.4, then when manual firmware through Recovery may require an intermediate firmware (for example, first on the 12.5.8, then 13.0.4). You may be in danger of getting an error, โThis package is for 'suryain_global' devices; this is a 'surya_global'".
โ ๏ธ Note: If you use custom Recovery (for example, TWRP), Before updating via Fastboot, you need to temporarily return the stock. Otherwise, Anti-Rollback protection may work, and the device will lock.

Method 1: Air Update (OTA)
The easiest and safest method is to automatically update through Settings, which is suitable for most users, but has limitations:
- ๐ Available only for official firmware (not customized).
- โณ Updates come with a delay (from a few days to months after release).
- ๐ซ Does not work if the device is rooted or modified bootloader.
To check for updates:
- Open the Settings. โ The phone.
- Tap on System Update (or Update Check).
- If the update is available, click Download (file weight is shown next to).
- After downloading, select Install Now or Install at Night.
If the update is not available, try:
- ๐ Restart the device and repeat the check.
- ๐ก Change the region in the settings SIM-Maps (sometimes updates arrive earlier in other countries).
- ๐ง Clear the cache of the System Update application in Settings โ Annexes โ Application management.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If after installation OTA-Update smartphone stuck on the logo POCO Wait 15 to 20 minutes, sometimes the first load takes a long time. If the screen is out and doesn't respond, try pressing the power button for 20 seconds to force a reboot.

Method 2: Manual update via Recovery
If OTA-Update is not available or an error comes out, you can install the firmware manually through stock Recovery. This method saves user data, but requires the correct choice of the firmware file.
Steps:
- Download the correct firmware from the official website: ๐ For Global: https://new.c.mi.com/global/miuidownload/index ๐ช๐บ For EEA: Choose a marked version EEA. ๐ฎ๐ณ For India: look IN file-name.
The file must have a.zip extension and a name of the type. miui_SURYAINGlobal_V13.0.4.0.SJGMIXM_... (where SURYAIN โ code code X3).

Download to Recovery.
1. Turn off the phone.
2.Put the power button + volume up until the MI logo appears.
3. Select the language (if required).
4. Go to Install update (or Apply update).Select the downloaded file
After the reboot, check the MIUI version in Settings โ About Phone.
| Type of firmware | File size | Are the data stored? | Do you need unlocking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| OTA (incremental) | 1.5โ2.5 GB | Yes. | No. |
| Recovery (full) | 2.5โ3.2 GB | Yes. | No. |
| Fastboot (full) | 3-4 GB | No (unless otherwise stated) | Yes (for unlocked bootloader) |

4. Method 3: Fastboot Firmware (for experienced)
This method is suitable if:
- ๐ง You've unlocked your bootloader.
- ๐ฆ We need to downgrade the version. MIUI (downgrade).
- ๐จ The smartphone does not turn on or hovers on the logo.
Note: Fastboot removes all data (unless you use the --no-userdata command) and there is a risk of activating the Anti-Rollback (if you are running the old version on the new model).
Step-by-step:
- Download the Fastboot firmware for your model from Xiaomi (a file with the.tgz or.zip extension). Unpack it into a folder on your PC.
- Install the drivers: ๐ฅ๏ธ For Windows: Download Mi Flash Tool and Qualcomm Drivers. ๐ง For Linux/Mac: Use fastboot from Android SDK.
- Load the phone into Fastboot mode: 1. Turn off the device. 2. Press the power button + volume down until the hare appears in the eardress cap. 3. Connect the phone to the PC via USB.
- Switch the device: ๐ฑ๏ธ Through Mi Flash Tool: Select a folder with unpacked firmware. Press Refresh - should appear COM-Select Clean All or Clean All and Lock (if you want to lock bootloader). Press Flash and wait until it's done (10โ15 minute). ๐ง Through the terminal (Linux/Mac/Windows s ADB): fastboot flash boot boot.img fastboot flash recovery recovery.img fastboot flash system system.img fastboot flash vendor vendor.img fastboot flash dtbo dtbo.img fastboot reboot
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the phone doesn't turn on after you've run through Fastboot and the red light flashes, it's a sign of a damaged partition persist. persist.img Fastboot Flash Continue persist.img.
๐ก
If the Mi Flash Tool gives you a "Couldn't find fastboot" error, try running the program on behalf of the administrator or temporarily disabling the antivirus. Also check that the USB cable supports data transfer (not all charging cables are suitable!).
5. Solving common errors in the update
Even when following instructions, errors can occur, and here are the most common ways to correct them:
- ๐ซ "Can't verify update" error: Reason: corrupted firmware file or model mismatch Solution: download the file again (check checksum) MD5) or rename it in update.zip.
- ๐ Hanging on the logo POCO After the update: Reason: conflict with custom Recovery or Magisk modules. Solution: boot into Recovery and run Wipe cache. If it doesn't work, go through Fastboot.
If none of these methods worked, try to roll back to the old MIUI (downgrade), but note: this can lead to activation of Anti-Rollback and complete locking of the device. For the Poco X3, a safe downgrade is only possible within one branch (for example, from MIUI 13 to MIUI 12.5, but not below).
๐ก
If the sound is lost or the sensor is not working after the update, most likely, the firmware is designed for another modification of the Poco X3 (for example, for the Poco X3 NFC instead of the usual Poco X3).
6. How to check the success of the update
After installing the new firmware, you need to make sure everything goes right.
- Check the MIUI version: Go to Settings โ About Phone. Check the MIUI version and build number with what is listed on Xiaomi's website for your model.
- Test the basic functions: ๐ Mobile and mobile phone calls (check both) SIM-cards, if any). ๐ท Camera (front and main). ๐ Speakers and microphone (record voice message). ๐ Charging (connect the charger). ๐ฎ Touch screen (take the test in Settings) โ Screen. โ Touch test).
Check for root or Magisk
If you had root access before the upgrade, it will disappear after the OTA or Recovery update, and you will need to re-sweeten Magisk through Recovery to restore it.
If you find bugs (such as overheating, fast battery drain, or app crashes), try:
- ๐ Reset the settings to factory (Settings) โ Additionally. โ Backup and reset โ Resetting settings).
- ๐ Reverse to the previous version (if the error is critical).
- ๐ Report the bug on the Xiaomi forum or in the Telegram chat Poco X3.
7. Alternative methods: custom firmware
If you are not satisfied with the official firmware, you can consider custom ones (for example, Pixel Experience, LineageOS or ArrowOS).
- โ ๏ธ Warranty is cancelled when unlocking bootloader.
- ๐ง Skills required to work with ADB/Fastboot.
- ๐ต Possible bugs (for example, non-functioning) NFC or camera problems).
Step-by-step instructions for installing custom firmware:
- Unlock bootloader: Apply for unlocking via Xiaomi's official website. Connect your phone in Fastboot mode and use the Mi Unlock Tool.
Install custom Recovery (TWRP)
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.7.0_12-surya.img
fastboot reboot recoveryFlush the firmware.
- Download a firmware.zip file (for example, from XDA Developers).
- In TWRP, select Wipe โ Advanced Wipe and select Dalvik, Cache, System, Data.
- Press Install and select the firmware file.
- Squeeze Gapps (if necessary): If you have no Google services, download the appropriate Open Gapps package (ARM64, Android 11/12) and install it after you have firmware.
In extreme cases, contact the service center - independent firmware through EDL can lead to complete loss of data.
