Introduction: Why upgrade to the firmware on the Mi Box S?
Welcome to all owners of Xiaomi Mi Box S β one of the most popular Android TV-If you're reading this article, you're already faced with the need to update your firmware or just want to keep your device up to date. Regular software updates not only add new features, but also fix critical security vulnerabilities, optimize performance and improve compatibility with modern applications.
According to Xiaomi statistics, more than 60% of problems with freezing or slow operation of the Mi Box S are solved by a simple firmware update. However, many users are afraid to perform this procedure on their own for fear of βbreakingβ the device. In this article, we will discuss three official ways of updating (automatic, manual through Recovery and with ADB), as well as how to avoid typical errors and what to do if something goes wrong.
Important: Mi Box S (MDZ-22-AB) has been supported by the manufacturer since 2018, but current updates are still coming out.The latest stable firmware version at the time of writing is Android TV 9 (MIUI TV 3.0.16). If your device is running on an earlier version, we recommend you update as soon as possible.
Method 1: Automatic updates via the Internet
The simplest and safest method is an over-the-air update (OTA) that doesn't require any additional devices or technical skills, but has one condition: the Mi Box S must be connected to a stable Wi-Fi network (you can't upgrade via mobile Internet).
- Turn on the console and go to the main menu.
- Open Settings β About the console β Update the system.
- Click Check for updates.
- If an update is available, follow the instructions on the screen.
It takes 5 to 20 minutes depending on the speed of the Internet, the console will reboot automatically. If after the update, the software version older than MIUI TV 3.0.12 is displayed in the settings, repeat the check - sometimes Xiaomi servers give updates with a delay.
Connect the Mi Box S to Wi-Fi (5GHz recommended)
Charging the remote at least 30%
Free up at least 500MB of memory
Disable VPN (can block Xiaomi servers)
-->
β οΈ Note: If a 403 Error message appears on the screen during the update or the packet failed to load, this means that Xiaomi servers are temporarily unavailable in your region. VPN Connected to Singapore or Hong Kong.
Advantages of this method:
- π It doesnβt require manual intervention β the system does everything.
- π‘οΈ Minimum risk of errors (firmware is checked for integrity).
- π₯ All settings and applications are saved.
Once a month, I check by hand.

Method 2: Manual updates through Recovery
If the automatic update doesnβt work (for example, because of a server lock in your area), you can manually install the firmware via Recovery mode. USB-A little more effort, but it is more reliable than OTA, Because you control the source of the files.
You'll need:
- π Official firmware for Mi Box S (select the Stable version for your region).
- πΎ USB-flash-drive FAT32 (up to 32 GB).
- π Cable OTG to connect the flash drive to the prefix (if the port) USB absent).
Step-by-step:
- Download the archive with firmware and rename it to update.zip (important without spaces!).
- Copy the file to a formatted flash drive.
- Connect the flash drive to the Mi Box S and go to Settings β About console β System Update β Update via USB.
- Select the update.zip file and confirm the installation.
| Firmware version | File size | Release date | Changes in changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI TV 3.0.16 | 1.2 GB | March 2026 | Fixed HDMI-CEC bugs, improved compatibility with Disney+ |
| MIUI TV 3.0.12 | 1.1 GB | November 2023 | Added support AV1-Codec, optimized energy consumption |
| MIUI TV 2.4.65 | 980MB | July 2022 | Fixed problems with connecting Bluetooth headphones |
β οΈ Note: If you have selected the file update.zip E:footer is wrong, which means the archive is damaged. Download the firmware again and check the checksum. MD5 (It must match the one listed on Xiaomiβs website).
What to do if the Mi Box S can't see USB-flash-drive?
Method 3: Update via ADB (for power users)
The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) method is suitable for those who are familiar with the command line or have encountered the firmware of Android devices, it allows you to install firmware even if the console is not loaded or locked, but requires a computer and basic knowledge of working with the terminal.
What will be required:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS and established ADB Tools.
- π Cable USB-A β USB-A (PC-connection).
- π Firmware in.img format (not.img) ZIP!).
Instructions:
- Turn on the Mi Box S USB debugging mode: Settings β About the console β Software version β Click 7 times on βSoftware Versionβ Settings β For developers β Debugging by USB (enable)
- Connect the console to your computer and check the connection: Adb devices must appear serial number of the device.
- Reboot the console in fastboot mode: adb reboot bootloader
- The first is the fastboot flash system.img.
π‘
If the fastboot command doesnβt work, try adding the path to the platform tools to the PATH environment variable or run the terminal on behalf of the administrator.
β οΈ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB If you're not sure what you're doing, you'd better use the first or second method, which is recommended only for console recovery after a failure.
Common Update Errors and Solutions
Even when following instructions, users sometimes encounter problems, and consider the most common errors and ways to fix them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Mistake 7 | Incompatible version of the firmware | Download firmware specifically for the Mi Box S (model MDZ-22-AB) |
| E:signature verification failed | A damaged firmware file | Check it out. MD5-file sum and download again |
| The console does not turn on after the update | Incorrect power outage during the process | Try resetting your settings via Recovery (press OK + Menu when you turn on) |
If after the update the console began to work slower:
- π§Ή Clear the cache in Settings β Annexes β All applications β Select an application β Clear the cache.
- π Make reset to factory settings (data will be deleted!).
- π οΈ Check the space available β if less than 1GB, remove unnecessary apps.
π‘
If the sound or image is gone after the update, check the HDMI-CEC settings in the TV menu. Sometimes resetting the TV settings solves the problem.
How to roll back the firmware to the previous version?
Updates donβt always go smoothly β sometimes new software is bugged or incompatible with your apps. Unfortunately, Xiaomi doesnβt provide an official way to roll back firmware, but thereβs a workaround through manual recovery.
You'll need:
- π Old version of the firmware (can be found on the forums) XDA Developers).
- πΎ USB-flash drive (as in Method 2).
- β οΈ Understanding that rollbacks can lead to data loss.
Instructions:
- Download the desired firmware version and rename it to update.zip.
- Connect the flash drive to the console and go to Recovery (press OK + Menu on the remote when you turn on).
- Select Apply update from USB and specify the file.
- After installation, run the Wipe Cache.
β οΈ Attention: Firmware rollback may disrupt some system applications (e.g. Google Play Services) If the console is constantly restarted after rollback, you will have to return to the current version of the software.
