The Xiaomi Mi 9, released in 2019, is still a popular smartphone among users who value the balance of performance and price. However, with the release of new versions of Android and MIUI, device owners are faced with the question: how to safely update the firmware to get fresh features, security fixes and improved stability? In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to update the Mi 9 โ from standard OTA to manual firmware through Fastboot, and also look at typical errors and their solutions.
It is important to understand that the upgrade process may vary depending on the current firmware version, device regional binding (Global, China, EEA) and bootloader unlock status. For example, if your Mi 9 is running MIUI 12 and hasnโt received an air update in a long time, alternative methods may need to be used. We will describe each step in detail so that even a beginner can cope without risking bricking the device.
1.Preparation for the update: what to do before the start
Before you start an update, there are a few critical steps that need to be taken, and neglecting them can lead to data loss, malfunctioning of the smartphone, or even complete inoperability, starting with checking the current firmware version and compatibility.
Open Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI Version. Remember or write down the current version (e.g. MIUI 14.0.5 Global). This will help you choose the correct firmware file. Also check the device model in Settings โ About Phone โ Model โ it should match the Mi 9 (cepheus in internal Xiaomi encoding).
- ๐ Battery charge at least 60%.When upgrading via Fastboot, it is better to connect the smartphone to the charger.
- ๐ฑ Backup all important data (photos, contacts, messages) Use Settings โ Google โ Backup or third-party services like Titanium Backup (requires root).
- ๐ Unlock the bootloader (if you plan to install custom firmware). For official updates via OTA or Mi Flash Tool is not required.
- ๐ Stable Internet connection: Wi-Fi is better than mobile Internet for downloading firmware weighing 2-3 GB.
Pay special attention to the regional version of the firmware. Installing China ROM on a Global device (and vice versa) can lead to problems with the language, Google services or the operation of the NFC module. Check the region in Settings โ Additional โ Region.
๐ก
If your Mi 9 doesn't get yours OTA-Updates, check if they are manually disabled in Settings โ The phone. โ Updating the system โ Threefold (โฎ) โ Update settings. Sometimes users accidentally turn off automatic verification.
Method 1: Update "over the air" (OTA)
The easiest and safest method is to upgrade via the built-in OTA (Over-The-Air) system, which is suitable for most users if the smartphone is officially supported by Xiaomi and does not have a modified firmware, the process takes 10โ30 minutes depending on the speed of the Internet and the size of the update.
Instructions:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Go to Settings โ About the phone โ System update.
- Click "Check Updates." If the update is available, the system will prompt you to download it.
- After download, click "Install" and confirm the reboot.
If the update is not available, try the following steps:
- ๐ Reboot your smartphone and repeat the check.
- ๐ถ Change the region to India or Russia (sometimes updates are released earlier in these regions).
- ๐ Wait 2-3 days โ OTA-updates spread by waves.
Important: If your Mi 9 is purchased in China and runs on China ROM without Google services, an update via OTA may remove Google Play and other apps, in which case it is better to use the method with the Mi Flash Tool (described below).
Method 2: Manual installation via Recovery
If OTA-Update is not available, but you don't want to risk it with Fastboot, you can install firmware through stock Recovery. This method is suitable for official firmware in.zip format and does not require unlocking the bootloader. However, it only works when you upgrade to the same or newer version. MIUI (downgrading impossible!).
Steps:
- Download the necessary firmware from the official Xiaomi website (select the Mi model). 9 The file must have the name of the type miui_CEPHEUSGlobal_V14.0.5.0.SFAMIXM_....
- Rename the file to update.zip and move it to the root folder of the smartphoneโs internal memory.
- Turn off the phone, then press Volume Up + Power to enter Recovery.
- Select the language (if you have a choice), then go to Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm the installation and wait for the completion (it will take 5-10 minutes).

Once installed, the smartphone will automatically restart. The first launch can take up to 15 minutes, which is normal. If the device has been getting stuck on the Mi logo for longer than 20 minutes, try forcibly restarting it (clamp Power for 10 seconds).
โ ๏ธ Note: Do not use this method to install custom firmware (such as LineageOS or Pixel Experience). TWRP Recovery and unlocked bootloader.
4. Method 3: Firmware via Mi Flash Tool (Fastboot)
If the first two methods didnโt work or you want to install stable global firmware on your device with China ROM, You'll have to use the Mi Flash Tool. This requires a Windows computer, USB-cable and unlocked boot loader (if you install unofficial firmware).
Detailed instructions:
- Download the Mi Flash Tool from the official Xiaomi website (Tools section).
- Download Fastboot firmware for Mi 9 (file in.tgz or.zip format, weight ~2 Unpack it in a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., GB, C:\Mi9_Fastboot).
- Turn off your smartphone and put it in Fastboot mode: press Volume down + Power before the hare appears in the hat-eared.
- Connect your phone to your PC. Install drivers if the Mi Flash Tool doesn't recognize the device (download here).
- In the Mi Flash Tool, click "Select" and select the folder with the unpacked firmware. Then select Clean All mode or Save User Data mode.
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (10-15 minutes).
| Firmware mode | Description | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| clean all | Clean all partitions (including internal memory) | When changing the firmware region or critical failures |
| clean all and lock | Cleaning + Locking of the loader | Only for official firmware, if you need to return the warranty |
| save user data | Saving user data | When updating within a single MIUI branch (e.g. 13 โ 14) |
Once the firmware is in place, the smartphone will restart. If the screen remains black for more than 5 minutes, try to force it to restart. In rare cases, you may need to re-run the firmware.

5. Solving Common Update Errors
Even if you follow the instructions, Xiaomi Mi 9 users may encounter errors, and letโs look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
- ๐ซ Error "Couldn't verify update" when installed via Recovery: Cause: damaged ZIP-Solution: Re-download the firmware and check the checksum (MD5). Also make sure the file is named accurately. update.zip (symbolless).
- ๐ Located on the Mi logo after firmware: Reason: version conflict or incomplete cache clearing Solution: Log in to Recovery (Loudness up) + Power) and select Wipe & Reset โ If it doesn't work, repeat the firmware through Fastboot with a full cleanup.
- ๐ต No network after update: Reason: modem part of the firmware does not match region. Solution: run only modem (files) modem.img and nvram.img) Fastboot with the command: fastboot flash modem modem.img fastboot flash nvram nvram.img
โ ๏ธ Note: If Google services (such as Play Market or Gmail) have stopped working after the update, youโve probably installed China. ROM. To return services, please go to Global. ROM The Mi Flash Tool with full cleaning (clean all).
To diagnose other errors, use the firmware log. In the Mi Flash Tool, it is displayed in the program window, and when you update via Recovery, you can connect your smartphone to your PC and view logs through ADB:
adb logcat > update_log.txt6 How to roll back an update if something goes wrong
Sometimes fresh firmware is worse than the previous one, with lags, fast battery life, or application incompatibility, and you can return the old version of MIUI, but with reservations:
- โณ Downgrade via Recovery is possible only within one branch of Android (for example, with the help of the Internet). MIUI 14 on MIUI 13, but both are Android 12-based).
- ๐ Downgrade via Fastboot requires an unlocked bootloader and complete data cleanup (clean all).
- ๐จ A rollback to Android 10 or lower on the Mi 9 could lead to camera and modem issues due to driver changes.
Instructions for rollback via Fastboot:
- Download the desired firmware version from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website.
- Unpack the archive and delete files from the folder flash_all_lock.bat and flash_all_except_storage.bat (They're blocking the loader).
- In the file flash_all.bat Replace the fastboot oem lock line with fastboot oem unlock (if the bootloader has been unlocked).
- Launch it. flash_all.bat on behalf of the administrator.
After a rollback, you may need to reset your smartphone, as after a reset. Some applications (such as banking) may require re-authorization.
๐ก
Firmware rollback is a last resort. Before you do that, try resetting to factory settings (Settings โ Additional โ Restore and Reset) or clearing the cache through Recovery. Often this solves problems without losing data.
7. Alternative firmware: should you install a caste?
If Xiaomiโs official firmware doesnโt suit you, you can consider alternatives like LineageOS, Pixel Experience or crDroid.
- ๐ More recent versions of Android (e.g. Android 13 instead of Android 12 in the latest official firmware for the Mi 9).
- ๐จ More customization options (theme design, gestures, performance settings).
- ๐ Lack of built-in Xiaomi software and advertising in system applications.
There are, however, downsides:
- ๐ Possible problems with autonomy (castom firmware is often less optimized for iron).
- ๐ธ Not all camera features are 100% functional (e.g. night mode or 48MP may not be available).
- ๐ ๏ธ No official support โ updates are coming from the community, bugs are possible.
To install custom firmware will require:
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool (can take up to 720 hours to wait!).
- Install TWRP Recovery (the Mi 9 version is downloaded here).
- Switch firmware and GApps (Google services) through TWRP.
Example of commands for installing TWRP:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.7.0_9-0-cepheus.img
fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-cepheus.imgโ ๏ธ Attention: Installing custom firmware will void warranty and may cause the device to run unstable. Before experimenting, make sure you have a backup of persist and modem partitions (they can be saved via TWRP Or Mi Flash Tool).
