What is HyperOS and Why You Should Install It
HyperOS, Xiaomiβs new operating system to replace MIUI on smartphones, tablets and other devices in the ecosystem, is built on Android 14 (for new models) and offers improved performance, an optimized interface and advanced features for working with IoT devices. The transition to HyperOS is not just a firmware update, itβs a platform change that affects the core of the system, drivers and even the logic of the background processes.
The main advantages of HyperOS over MIUI 14:
- π Increased speed thanks to optimized core and reduced resource consumption.
- π Deep integration with Xiaomi ecosystem β synchronization with smartwatches, lamps, robot vacuum cleaners and other gadgets has become easier.
- π‘οΈ Improved security: a new mechanism for delimiting application rights and protection against data leaks.
- π¨ Adaptive design that adjusts to the screen size (relevant for foldable smartphones and tablets).
However, upgrading to HyperOS is not always an obvious process. Depending on the Xiaomi model, region and current firmware version, the user can have different options: automatic air update (OTA), manual installation via Recovery, or even unlocking the bootloader and then running through Fastboot. In this article, we will analyze all the current methods, and also explain how to avoid errors.
Preparing the device for the update: 5 mandatory steps
Before you start upgrading, you need to make sure your device is ready for the procedure. Neglecting preparation can lead to a logo hover, data loss, or even a smartphone brisk (completely inoperable).
- Check the model and compatibility. HyperOS is not supported on all Xiaomi devices. A full list of officially confirmed models can be found on the Xiaomi HyperOS website. For example, Redmi Note 11 (codename spes) received an update, and Redmi 9A (dandelion) did not.
- The battery charge is at least 60 percent. The upgrade process can take up to 30 minutes, and if the smartphone runs out at that point, the consequences will be unpredictable.
- Free up space in memory. Update requires a minimum of 3 to 5 GB of free space. Check Settings β Storage.
- Back up. Use the settings. β The phone. β Backup or third-party applications like Swift Backup (require root rights: π± Contact and SMS (You can sync with your Google Account). πΈ Photos and videos (copy to PC or cloud). π Passwords from Wi-Fi and apps (use Xiaomi Cloud or Bitwarden).

βοΈ Checklist before update
Important: If your device was unlocked through the Mi Unlock Tool or has custom firmware installed (for example, LineageOS), an update via OTA can block the bootloader, in which case you will need manual firmware via Fastboot.
Method 1: Air-to-air update (OTA) is the easiest method
If your device officially supports HyperOS and is in stock firmware (no modifications), the safest way is to wait for notification of the availability of the update.
Instructions for updating through OTA:
- Open the Settings. β The phone.
- Slip the MIUI version several times until the words βYou became a developer!β appear (this unlocks hidden settings).
- Return to the main settings and select Additional β System Update.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Update Package (if the update has already been downloaded) or Check Updates.
- If the update is available, click Download and wait for the download to complete.
- After downloading, the system will offer to install the update - confirm and wait for the reboot.
If the update doesnβt appear despite the official model support, try the following:
- π Change the firmware region. Sometimes updates come out first for Global, then for EEA (Europe) or China, which can be used as an app MIUI bootloader (available on Play Market).
- π‘ Connect. VPN. Some updates are first tested in certain countries (e.g. India or China) and try connecting to servers in those regions.
- β³ Wait 1-2 weeks. Xiaomi often rolls out updates in waves and your device may be in the next batch.

Method 2: Manual update via Recovery β if OTA doesnβt work
If automatic updates are not available or if they are constantly in error, you can install HyperOS manually through Recovery, which is suitable for devices with a locked bootloader and does not require unlocking or root rights.
Step-by-step:
- Download the correct firmware. Download the file from the official MIUI Downloads website. Choose your model, then search for the HyperOS partition (usually labeled Stable or Beta). The file should have a.zip extension and weigh 2-4 GB.
- Transfer the file to your smartphone. Connect the device to your PC and copy the downloaded.zip to the root folder of internal memory (not nested: hyperos_spes_global_1.0.1.0.UMWMIXM_... (where spes is the code name of your model).
- Boot in Recovery. Turn off your smartphone, then press Volume up + Power until the Mi logo appears. Release the buttons - you will be taken to the MI-Recovery menu.
- Select the language (usually English or Chinese), then tap on Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm the installation and wait for the process to be completed (it will take 5-15 minutes).
- Restart the device via Reboot β System.
| Model code name | Xiaomi model | Support for HyperOS | Firmware reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| spes | Redmi Note 11 / 11 Pro | Yeah (Stable) | Download |
| vega | Xiaomi 12 Pro | Yeah (Stable) | Download |
| cupid | Xiaomi 13 | Yeah (Stable) | Download |
| dandelion | Redmi 9A / 9C | No. | β |
β οΈ Note: If you install through Recovery, "Can't verify update" error occurs, it means that the firmware file is corrupted or not intended for your model (MD5).
π‘
If after updating through Recovery smartphone got stuck on boot (bootloop), try to reset settings through the same Recovery: select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data. This will delete all data, but the system will boot.
Method 3: Fastboot Firmware for Power Users
If the first two methods fail (for example, due to custom firmware or damaged partition recovery), the option of firmware via Fastboot remains. This method requires an unlocked bootloader and work with the command line, so it is only suitable for advanced users.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with drivers installed ADB/Fastboot (You can download from the Android website).
- π Cable USB Type-C (preferably original).
- π Firmware in.tgz or.zip format for Fastboot (downloads from the same format) MIUI Downloads, but choose the Fastboot version).
- π Unlocked bootloader (if not unlocked, use Mi Unlock Tool).
Instructions for firmware through Fastboot:
- Unpack the downloaded firmware in a folder on the PC (for example, C:\hyperos_fastboot).
- Turn off your smartphone and press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode (the image of a hare in a hat-outfit will appear).
- Connect the device to the PC and open the command line (Win + R β cmd).
- Go to the folder with the firmware: cd C:\hyperos_fastboot
- Start the Firmware Script: Fastboot Update hyperos_spes_global_images_1.0.1.0.UMWMIXM_20260315.0000.00_14.0_global.zip (Replace the file name with yours).
- Wait for the process to be completed (about 10-20 minutes) and the smartphone will reboot automatically.
β οΈ Note: If an error occurs during firmware through Fastboot "FAILED (remote:'Flashing is not allowed in Lock State') means that the bootloader is locked. You need to unlock it through the Mi Unlock Tool (requires a Mi Account binding and waiting 7-15 days for new devices).
Typical errors when upgrading to HyperOS and their solutions
Even when following instructions, users often encounter problems, and let's look at some of the most common mistakes and how to fix them.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "Can't verify update" in Recovery | A damaged firmware file or model mismatch. | Pump the firmware, check it out. MD5-Make sure the file is for your model. |
| Hang on the Mi logo after the update. | Conflict with custom modifications (root, Magisk, Xposed). | Reset your settings via Recovery or stitch clean firmware through Fastboot. |
| No command at Recovery. | Recovery section is damaged. | Install custom Recovery (like TWRP) or run the stock through Fastboot. |
| Error 7 when installed via TWRP | Incompatible with the current version of MIUI. | Upgrade to the latest version of MIUI 14, then install HyperOS. |
If you have noticed the following problems after upgrading to HyperOS:

What to do if HyperOS does not like: a pullback on MIUI
Not everyone likes HyperOS, some complain about the interface, some about bugs in the work, and fortunately, you can return MIUI 14, but with reservations:
Ways of rollback:
- π Through Recovery: Download the latest stable firmware MIUI 14 for your model and install it similarly to HyperOS (see Method 2).
- π₯οΈ Fastboot: Sweep through the full package MIUI from the official website (see Method 3).
β οΈ Attention: Recoil on MIUI After upgrading to HyperOS, you may lose data if you donβt back up.In addition, some features (e.g., improved sync with IoT devices) will stop working.
If youβre staying on HyperOS but want to bring back the MIUI interface, try:
- π¨ Set a dark theme in Settings β Display. β Dark mode.
- π§ Set up control gestures in Settings β Display. β Additionally. β Full screen mode.
- π± Use launchers like Nova Launcher or Hyperion Launcher (stylized as a new launcher) MIUI).
