The βError applying updateβ error on Xiaomi devices is one of the most common problems when trying to update firmware through the standard menu or manually, it can appear on smartphones (Redmi, POCO, Mi), tablets and even Mi TVs, interrupting the installation process of the update during the check or unpacking phase of files. In most cases, the error is due to a damaged service pack, version incompatibility or hardware limitations, but it can be fixed without going to the service center.
In this article, we will look at all possible causes of the error, from technical failures to user errors, and provide step-by-step instructions for each type of Xiaomi device. Particular attention will be paid to recovery methods through Fastboot and EDL, which work even when the device is βbrickβ (completely disabled) and if you see on the screen the inscription Error applying update: 7, Error applying update: 20 or other code, you will find a solution here.
Why is there an error called βError Applying Updateβ?
An update error on Xiaomi never happens for nothing, and it is always preceded by one of the following reasons:
- π¦ Damaged firmware file β not downloaded completely, with errors or from an unreliable source (not from the official Xiaomi website).
- π Version incompatibility: An attempt to install firmware for another model or region (e.g. Global on China without unlocking the bootloader).
- π Low battery power β if the level is below 50%, the system can interrupt the update to protect against shutdown.
- π οΈ Modified firmware - the presence of root rights, custom recaveri (TWRP) or modified system files.
- π₯οΈ Hardware limitations β lack of memory in the section /system or damaged sectors of the drive.
- π Regional locks β some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro) require unlocking the bootloader to install unofficial firmware.
The most common error codes and their value:
| Error code | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Error 7 | Device and firmware incompatibility (e.g. trying to install Mi 11 on Redmi 9) | Download the correct version of the firmware for your model |
| Error 20 | A damaged update.zip file or a lack of memory space | Re-load the file or clear the memory |
| Error 21 | Error of checking the firmware signature (often when installing custom software) | Unlock the bootloader or use the official package |
| Error 22 | Problems with /data or /cache | Perform a reset through Recovery |
If the error occurred after an attempt to update by air (OTA), the problem usually lies in the server part of Xiaomi β the package could be damaged during the transfer. In this case, just wait a few hours and try again. For manual firmware (Fastboot, Recovery), the reasons are deeper and require a comprehensive approach.
Preparing for Error Resolving: What to Do Before Starting
Before you start active actions, follow the mandatory preparatory steps:
- Check the device model β go to Settings β About Phone β Model. For example, the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 11 Pro (without 5G) are different devices with different firmware!
- Make sure you charge your battery β at least 60% for smartphones and 100% for TVs (when upgrading via USB).
- Download the official firmware from the Xiaomi Firmware website or through the Xiaomi Flash Tool.
- Prepare a USB cable, preferably original, as cheap cables can interrupt data transmission.
Make a backup copy of the data (photos, contacts, messages) |
Record the IMEI of the device (in case of reset)|
Disable antivirus and firewall on PC|
Make sure your device has enough memory (minimum 2GB free) |
Download Mi Flash Tool drivers (for Fastboot firmware)-->
If you are updating your Mi TV, check out:
- πΊ Firmware version in the Settings menu β On TV.
- π Type of connection - for updating through USB use the port USB 2.0 (usually black).
- π File format β firmware for TV should be in.zip format and be called update.zip.
β οΈ Note: If your device is already in a βbrickβ state** (it does not turn on, it hung on the Mi logo), do not try to sew it through Recovery - this can aggravate the problem. EDL.
Method 1: Re-installation OTA-Updates (for working devices)
If the error occurred when you updated "over the air"** (via the Settings menu β System Update), try the following steps:
- Restart the device in normal mode.
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network (not mobile internet!).
- Go to Settings β System Update β Three Dots (menu) β Download the latest version.
- If the update is not installed again, clear the cache of the application System Update: Settings β Applications β System Update β System Update β Storage β Clear the cache
If that doesnβt help, download the full OTA package for your model from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website and install it manually:
- Download update.zip file to the root of internal memory.
- Go to Settings β System Update β Three Dots β Select an update file.
- Select the downloaded file and wait for the process to be completed.
π‘
If the device is stuck in the update check phase (Progress 50%), wait 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the process looks frozen, but in fact there is a background check of files.
Method 2: Install firmware via Recovery (for smartphones and tablets)
If OTA-The update doesnβt pass and the device is still on, try installing the firmware through the standard recovery (Stock Recovery), which is suitable for most Xiaomi smartphones, except for models with a locked bootloader (for example, new ones). POCO F5 or Redmi K60).
Step-by-step:
- Download the correct firmware version for your model (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Global) in.zip format.
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of internal memory (not in folders!).
- Turn off the device.
- Press the button combination to log in to Recovery: For most smartphones: Volume up + Power. For POCO: Volume up + Power (hold 10 seconds).
Install update.zip β Choose update.zip β ConfirmWait until the process is complete (don't interrupt!) The device will restart automatically.
β οΈ Note: If a Can't verify update error appears in Recovery, it means that the firmware is not designed for your model or region.
What if Recovery doesnβt see the update.zip file?
Method 3: Fastboot firmware (for bricks and complex cases)
Fastboot is the most reliable way to restore a device if:
- π΅ The device does not turn on or hangs on the Mi logo.
- π Error Applying Update Error Appears When You Try to Update.
- π The bootloader is unlocked (for new models it is mandatory!).
You'll need to get the firmware:
- π» Windows computer (Windows recommended) 10/11).
- π Original. USB-cable (better from the set).
- π Firmware in.tgz or.zip format (download from the official website).
- π οΈ Mi Flash Tool (download from xiaomiflashtool.com).
Instructions for firmware through Fastboot:
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and Xiaomi drivers on your PC.
- Unpack the downloaded firmware in a folder (for example, C:\Xiaomi\ROM).
- Turn off the device and put it in Fastboot mode: Clip Volume Down + Power (hold 10-15 seconds)
- Connect the device to a PC. The device should appear in Device Manager Android Bootloader Interface.
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the path to the firmware folder.
- At the bottom, select firmware mode: Clean all β complete cleanup (recommended for errors); Clean all and lock β clean + lock the bootloader (only if it was unlocked!); Save user data β data storage (does not always work when errors occur).
Flash
If the process ends with a Flash not done or Anti-rollback error, it means that you are trying to install an older version of the firmware than the one already on the device. EDL-mode (see the following method).
π‘
Fastboot erases all data on the device, including photos and apps. If the device is still turning on, back up before you start!
Method 4: EDL Recovery (for devices with locked bootloader)
EDL-Emergency Download Mode is a firmware emergency mode that works even on devices with a locked bootloader (EDL-cable or Deep Flash Cable) and Qualcomm command knowledge, but allows you to recover even completely dead devices.
β οΈ Warning: Use of EDL Without official permission, Xiaomi may be blocked. IMEI New models (e.g. Redmi Note 12, POCO X5). This method is recommended only to experienced users or in service centers.
How to log into EDL:
- Turn off the device.
- Close the contacts Test Point (location depends on the model, look for schemes for your device).
- Connect. USB-cable to PC β the device is defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Use the Mi Flash Tool or QFil for firmware.
For firmware via EDL:
- Download the full firmware package with the.mbn or.elf extension.
- In the Mi Flash Tool, select EDL mode and specify the path to the firmware file.
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (it can take up to 20 minutes).
If the device does not turn on after firmware or an Invalid IMEI error appears, you will need to restore the IMEI through an engineering menu or service utilities (for example, SN Write Tool).
Method 5: Update Mi TV via USB (for Xiaomi TVs)
If the error "Error applying update"** appeared on the Mi TV, the algorithm of actions is different from smartphones. The main rule is not to use firmware from other models, even if they look similar (for example, Mi TV 4S 55" and Mi TV 4A 55" have different firmware!).
Instructions for Mi TV:
- Download the official firmware for your model from the Xiaomi Support website.
- Unpack the archive and rename the file to update.zip.
- Copy the file to an empty flash drive formatted in FAT32.
- Turn off the TV from the socket, insert the flash drive into the USB 2.0 port (usually located on the side).
- Press the Menu button on the remote and, holding it, turn the TV on the network.
- Release the button when the update menu appears on the screen.
- Select Update and wait until the process is complete (donβt turn off the TV!).
β οΈ Note: If the TV does not turn on after the update or there is a No signal error, this may mean that the firmware was intended for another revision of the board. In this case, you need to download the exact version of the software (check the board model on the sticker on the back of the TV).
What do you do if nothing helps?
If all of these methods fail, the problem may be deeper:
- π§ Damaged Memory (eMMC) β In this case, a chip replacement at a service center is required.
- π Faulty. USB-Port β Try flashing your device through another port or cable.
- π‘ Uploader problems β new Xiaomi models (released after 2022) may require an official unlocker from the manufacturer.
- π‘οΈ Hardware locking β some devices (for example, POCO F4 GT) They have protection against rollback of firmware (Anti-rollback).
In such cases, it is recommended that:
- Contact the official Xiaomi service center (list on the website mi.com).
- Write in support of Xiaomi via the official chat, specifying: Device model Current firmware version (if known) Error code (for example, Error 7) Serial number (located on the box or under the battery)
- If the device is warranty, do not try to sew it yourself - this can cancel the warranty.
For owners of devices with unlocked bootloader and experience with ADB/Fastboot Alternative methods can be tried:
- Install custom recavery (TWRP) and firmware through it.
- Using the XiaomiTool V2 utility for automatic firmware selection.
- Reverse to an older version of the software (if Anti-rollback allows).
