Why Xiaomi Robot Vacuum Can't Speak Russian and How to Fix It
You bought a Xiaomi Mi Robot, Dreame or Viomi robot vacuum cleaner, but instead of the usual Russian language, you hear Chinese characters or English phrases? The problem is familiar to many owners - the manufacturer often supplies devices with international firmware where the Russian voice is turned off or absent. However, the solution is: from official updates to manual installation of the voice package.
In this article, 5 proven ways to get a robot to speak Russian, including instructions for models without language support out of the box. We will examine both software methods (firmware, settings in Mi Home) and hardware (replacing a speaker with a voice chip).
Before you start, check:
- π Model of your vacuum cleaner (on the case or in the Mi Home). Some budget versions (for example, Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite) do not have a Russian voice in principle.
- π Mi Account Region: If China is selected, the Russian voice can be blocked even if it is in the firmware.
- π Volume speaker. Sometimes the problem is not the language, but the lost sound settings (checked in the device menu).
Method 1: Change region to Mi Home (the easiest method)
If your robot vacuum cleaner officially supports Russian but speaks another language, first check the region in the Mi Home app.
- Open Mi Home and go to profile (the icon of the person in the upper right corner).
- Click on the line with your region (e.g., "China" or "Singapore").
- Choose Russia or Russia from the list, and if you don't have that option, use Europe or Global.
- Restart the app and check the vacuum cleaner's voice.
β οΈ Note: When you change region, some features (such as Alice integration or Google Assistant) may temporarily shut down. Also note that models purchased in China may require a link to another server (instruction below).
If the change of region didn't help, move on to the next way, and you may not have a Russian voice packet in your firmware, and you'll have to install it manually.
Method 2: Update the firmware through Mi Home (official method)
The manufacturer regularly releases updates that add support for new languages to check for up-to-date firmware:
- Open Mi Home and select your vacuum cleaner.
- Go to Settings β About the device β Update firmware.
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait until it is completed (the robot must be connected to Wi-Fi and charged at least 20%).
After updating, check the language in the settings:
- Press the Home button on the vacuum cleaner for 3 seconds until the signal sounds.
- Say the command "Settings" (in English - "Settings").
- Select Language and find "Russian".
π‘
If the update is 0%-hungry, try restarting the vacuum cleaner by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
| Model vacuum cleaner | Support for the Russian voice | Is a handheld firmware required? |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro | Yes (from firmware 3.5.9) | No. |
| Dreame Bot D9 | Yeah, from the factory. | No. |
| Viomi V3 | Partially (teams only) | Yes (for full voiceover) |
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1S | No. | Yes (unofficial firmware) |
β οΈ Note: If your model does not officially support Russian (see table), try to update via Mi Home will not work).
Method 3: Manual firmware update with Russian voice
Models without official Russian language support will require custom firmware installation, a method suitable for advanced users, as it carries risks (e.g. loss of warranty or βbrickingβ of the device).
You'll need:
- π» Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux.
- π USB-Type C Cable (to connect vacuum cleaner).
- π Firmware with Russian voice (you can download on the forums) 4PDA Xiaomi Community).
- π The Mi Home Hack program or ADB Tools.
Download firmware for your model | Make sure battery power >50% | Disable antivirus on PC | Backup current settings in Mi Home
-->
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the archive with the firmware in a folder on the computer.
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the PC through USB-cable (the port is usually located under the lid on the side).
- Start ADB and enter the commands: Adb devices adb shell If the device is not defined, install Xiaomi USB Drivers drivers.
- Enter the command to install firmware (example for Mi Robot Vacuum) 1S): adb sideload firmware_ru.zip
- Wait until the robot is finished (the robot will restart automatically).
What to do if the firmware is not installed?
Important: After manual firmware, some features (such as integration with Mi Home) may not work properly. Make a backup of your settings before you start!
Method 4: Replace voice through third-party applications
If the firmware didn't help or you don't want to take risks, you can use alternative vacuum control apps, which often have voice command translation built in:
- π± DreameHome (for Dreame robots) β supports Russian even on models without official localization.
- π€ Robot Vacuum Controller (for Xiaomi Mi Robot) β allows you to change voice packets manually.
- π Home Assistant + Xiaomi Miio plugin β for advanced users (configure via YAML-configuration).
Example of settings in the Robot Vacuum Controller:
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the application through the token (instructions for obtaining the token are on the GitHub project).
- Go to the Settings β Voice Packs.
- Select "Russian" and click Download.
- Reboot the robot.
π‘
The application side may not support all of the features of the original Mi Home (e.g., zoning or room maps).
Method 5: Hardware replacement speaker with voice chip
If the software methods donβt work, then the voice module is physically replaced, which is suitable for older models (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Robot 1), where the voice chip is soldered to the board.
What will be required:
- π§ Torx screwdriver T5/T6 hull-breaker.
- π New speaker with Russian voice (sold on AliExpress, example: "Xiaomi Robot Russian Voice Module").
- π₯ soldering iron (if the chip is not on the connector, but soldered).
Instructions for replacement:
- Disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the network and remove the battery.
- Remove the bottom cover (usually mounted on 4-6 screws).
- Find the speaker module (located next to the motherboard).
- Unplug the connector or solder out the old chip, install a new one.
- Get the body together and check the work.
Where to buy a Russian language module?
β οΈ Warning: Self-disassembly of the vacuum cleaner will void the warranty. If you are not sure about your skills, contact the service center. Also make sure that the module you buy is compatible with your model - some chips only work with certain versions of the boards.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When trying to turn on the Russian voice, users often face typical problems.
- π Robot does not respond to commands after firmware β Reset the settings to factory (Settings) β Reset at Mi Home).
- π£ Voice is available, but incomprehensible (robotic) β Download a high-quality voice package (for example, from Ivan (Yandex) TTS)).
- π After the update, functions disappeared β Remove the firmware to the previous version through ADB.
- π The speaker works, but the language doesnβt change. β Check if the region settings in Mi Home have gone wrong.
