Why Xiaomiβs Fastboot may not work and where to start
Fastboot mode is a key tool for firmware, unlocking the bootloader and recovering Xiaomi, Redmi or smartphones. POCO. But what if, when you connect the device to the PC, the command fastboot devices returns an empty line, and the phone does not respond to the buttons? USB-port, cable, and software failures β from the absence of drivers to a blocked bootloader.
The first thing to check is the physical connection. Use the original Xiaomi cable (or a certified USB-TypeC with data support), connect to the back port of your PC (they are more often stable powered). Try several USB ports, sometimes the problem is solved by a banal change of connector. If the phone is charging but not determined in fastboot, go to check the drivers and system settings.
The second critical point is the bootloader state: on new Xiaomi devices (released after 2022), the bootloader is locked by default, and without official unlocking through the Mi Unlock Tool, fastboot and EDL modes may not work correctly. Make sure you follow all the steps to link your Mi Account to the device (if required).
Connection Check: cable, port and USB modes
So, let's start with the basics, the hardware, and most of the time, the problem is that the cable is poor or unstable. USB-This is what you need to do:
- π Use the original Xiaomi cable or a certified USB-TypeC with support USB 2.0 (Fastboot does not require high speed) USB 3.0, but stability is important).
- π» Connect to the rear port of the PC - they usually have a direct connection to the motherboard and stable power.
- π Try another one. USB-port, especially if you have a laptop, sometimes the ports are software-enabled or have power restrictions.
- π± Make sure the phone is in Fastboot mode: the screen should display a screensaver with Mi Bunny and the inscription FASTBOOT. If the screen is black, the device is off or in mode EDL.
If, after this manipulation, the fastboot device command still doesnβt show your device, go to driver check. On devices with a Qualcomm processor (for example, Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3 Pro), the Fastboot may not work due to a conflict with the QDLoader drivers that are used for EDL mode.
Installation and update of drivers for Fastboot
Without the right drivers, Windows wonβt be able to recognize your device in fastboot mode. Even if your phone is defined as Android Device in Device Manager, it doesnβt guarantee ADB/Fastboot performance.
- Download the latest version of the Mi Flash Tool or Xiaomi USB Driver from Xiaomiβs official website (Support β Downloads section). Avoid third-party sources β they may contain outdated or modified drivers.
- Remove old drivers through Device Manager: Open Device Manager (Win + X β Device Manager). Find the device under Other Devices (may appear as Android or Xiaomi with an exclamation mark). Right-click β Delete Device β tick Remove driver programs for this device.
- Install drivers manually: Connect your phone in fastboot mode. In Device Manager, click Update Hardware Configuration. If the device is not automatically determined, right-click β Update the driver β Search for drivers on this computer β specify the folder with the downloaded drivers.
Devices on Qualcomm (most Xiaomi) may require additional installation of QDLoader drivers. These can be found in the archive with the Mi Flash Tool or on the Qualcomm website. Attention: these drivers are often blocked by antiviruses - temporarily turn off protection during installation.

Unlocking the bootloader: why Fastboot may not work on the new Xiaomi
Starting in 2022, Xiaomi has tightened its security policy: on new devices (e.g. Redmi Note 12, POCO F5, Xiaomi 13), the bootloader is blocked by default, which means that even if you plug the phone in correctly and installed the drivers, fastboot commands will ignore or return the FAILED error (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed').
To unlock the bootloader, follow the following steps:
- Link your Mi Account to your device: Go to Settings β Mi Account β Linked Devices. Make sure your account is linked to your phone (SMS or email confirmation is required).
- Enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking: Activate Developer Mode: Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version (click 7 times). Return to Settings β Additional β For Developers and enable: Debugging over USB OEM Unlock (may not be available on some models)
- Use Mi Unlock Tool: Download the official Mi Unlock Tool from Xiaomi. Launch it on behalf of the administrator and follow the instructions (Migon account authorization is required). Connect your phone in fastboot mode and wait for the process to be completed (it can take up to 72 hours on new devices).
β οΈ Attention: Unlocking the bootloader resets all data on the device! backup important files in advance. Also note that on some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T) Unlocking can lead to loss of warranty.

Fastboot Errors: Decryption and Solutions
If the device is detected in fastboot devices but the commands are not executed, note the error messages.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| FAILED (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed') | bootloader locked | Unlock the device through the Mi Unlock Tool (see section above) |
| FAILED (remote: 'Device is locked. Cannot flash images') | Device in anti-rollback state (protection against firmware rollback) | Switch only the official firmware of the same or newer version |
| waiting for device | Drivers not installed or the device is not in fastboot mode | Check the connection, reinstall the drivers, restart the PC |
| FAILED (remote: 'Not allow to flash') | Incompatible firmware (e.g. firmware for Global on China model) | Download the correct firmware version for your model and region |
If you see a FAILED error (remote: 'This miui version cannot be downgraded'), it means you're trying to flash an older version of MIUI than the one installed now, in which case only firmware via EDL (emergency mode) or waiting for an official update will help.

If the fastboot reboot command doesnβt work, try physically holding the power button for 10-15 seconds for a forced reboot.
Alternative Firmware Methods If Fastboot Doesn't Work
If fastboot stubbornly does not recognize the device, and unlocking the bootloader does not help, consider alternative methods of firmware:
- π§ Regime. EDL (Emergency Download Mode: Emergency mode for firmware through Qualcomm tools, requires a special cable or test point on the board, suitable for bricks (devices that are not included), requires a programr file and the Mi Flash Tool utility.
- π± Firmware via Recovery - if the phone turns on but fastboot doesn't work: Download the firmware in.zip format for Recovery. Rename the file to update.zip And put it in the root of the memory. + Volume Up to log in to Recovery, select Install update.zip.
- π₯οΈ Using third-party tools, such as XiaomiTool V2 OrangeFox Recovery (for experienced users).
EDL mode may require an authorized Mi Account (on new devices). If you are not sure about your actions, you should contact the service center - the wrong firmware through EDL can finally "kill" the device.
π‘
If the Fastboot is not working due to hardware problems (damaged) USB-The only way out is to repair the motherboard, in which case, the firmware is through the EDL Or recovery will also be impossible.
