Modern wearables from Xiaomi and the Amazfit sub-brand have become popular choices for health and physical activity watchers. However, after unpacking the device, many users face primary difficulties in trying to sync the tracker with a smartphone. The pairing process requires care, since there are several software platforms that can be used depending on the model and year of release of the device.
It’s important to understand that Bluetooth is the primary channel for data transfer, and its stability is critical to the proper functioning of all functions. Incorrect configuration at the initial stage can lead to permanent communication breaks, no notifications or incorrect counting of steps. In this article, we will take a detailed look at the entire path from charging the device to full integration into your digital ecosystem.
Don’t ignore the phone’s operating system requirements, as older versions of Android or iOS may simply not see the new device on the list of available devices to connect to.Before you start taking action, make sure your smartphone meets the minimum system requirements specified by the manufacturer in the documentation.
The first and most important step is to install the right software, as it acts as a bridge between the watch and the phone. In recent years, Huami (the manufacturer of the Amazfit line) has been actively moving its devices to the Zepp platform, which combined the functionality of old Mi Fit and Amazfit applications. For new models such as the GTS 2, GTR 3 or T-Rex 2, using Zepp is a must.
Download the application should be exclusively from official stores: Google Play for Android or App Store for iOS. APK-files from unverified sources can lead to the installation of malicious code or a broken version of the program that will not be able to recognize the device. After installation, you need to register an account with a real email, as this will be required to restore data in the future.
When you register with the app, carefully fill in the anthropometric data (height, weight, date of birth), because it depends on the accuracy of calorie calculation and analysis of sleep phases, these parameters the algorithm uses to build a basic model of your body, and then you can change them, but the initial calibration will be confused.
Physically preparing your device for the first turn on is not just a formality, but a prerequisite for a successful start. Often users try to connect a device that is completely discharged, which leads to pairing errors or instantaneous shutdown during the firmware update process. Connect the tracker to the original charging cable and wait for the logo or charge indicator to appear.
Make sure your smartphone has Bluetooth, geolocation (GPS) and notifications on. On Android devices since version 6.0, geolocation access is mandatory for the system to scan Bluetooth devices. Without GPS enabled, your phone simply won’t see your watch on the list of available devices.
It’s also worth checking if the device is connected to other phones. If you’ve tried to set up the watch before or if it’s paired with another gadget, you’ll need to reset to factory settings. This is done through the tracker’s menu in Settings → Reset or System → Disconnect.
The process of direct pairing may vary depending on the model, but the overall algorithm remains the same. Don't try to connect the device through the standard Bluetooth menu in the phone's settings - this is a common error that leads to conflicts.
Launch the app on your smartphone, log in to your account and go to the Profile tab. At the top of the screen or in the list of devices, find the Add Device button. The app will prompt you to select the type of device from the list: watch, bracelet, scale or headphones. Choose the appropriate category.
Next, you'll automatically search for nearby devices. If your watch is charged and paired (usually automatically when you first turn it on), you'll see the name of the device on the screen. Click on the model name, and the watch screen may ask you to confirm pairing with a code or button. Confirm the action by pressing the touch screen or physical button.
☑️ Checklist of successful connection
There are a few nuances that can prevent successful connection even when all the steps are done correctly. Often the problem lies in the aggressive power saving system of the smartphone, which “kills” the background processes of the application, preventing it from maintaining constant communication with the watch. For Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor, this is especially true because of their branded shells MIUI and EMUI.
You must manually provide Zepp with all the permissions you request, including access to contacts, SMS, calls and location (“always”). If you deny access to notifications, the clock will not vibrate when incoming calls. Also, in the battery settings for the application, you must select “No restrictions” or “Out-Start” mode so that the system does not close it.
If the search for the device does not begin or stops, try the following troubleshooting algorithm: turn off Bluetooth on the phone, restart the smartphone, then turn on Bluetooth and try again. In extreme cases, remove the device from the list of conjugated in the Bluetooth settings of the phone (if it appears there), and reset the network settings on the smartphone.
Once paired successfully, the device will likely offer software updates, a critical step, as factory firmware often contains bugs that affect sensor performance and connection stability, and can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to update, during which time the watch screen can go out and light up.
It is strictly forbidden to interrupt the updating process or carry the phone away from the clock. If the watch battery sits down during firmware, the device can turn into a "brick", which can only be restored in the service center through the programmer. Make sure that the charge of the watch is at least 30-40% before the procedure begins.
During an update, the application interface may freeze at a certain percentage (e.g., 20% or 80%) which is normal for recording large amounts of data. Just be patient and don’t switch to other heavy apps on the phone so as not to interrupt the flow of data.
What if the update is forever gone?
Modern trackers have a wide range of functionality that requires fine-tuning after a basic connection. By default, many notifications can be disabled, and sleep or stress monitoring can not work properly without your personal data. Go to the profile of the device in the application to configure the displayed dials and widgets.
Pay special attention to setting up notifications. You can choose which apps will duplicate information on your wrist: messengers, social networks, mail or calls. Also, this section often hides the setting of the wrist lift to turn on the screen — if the watch does not respond to movement, check this setting.
For athletes, setting up sports modes is important, you can add or remove activities from the fast menu of the watch, and you can also set up targets in the app, such as reminding you to stand up if you sit for more than an hour, or achieving a goal of 10,000 steps.
💡
For better accuracy GPS-Wait until the icon appears on the watch screen or in the application (satellites found) before starting the movement.
The table below shows the main differences in the connection process for different generations of devices, as the software part has changed significantly over time.
| Model/Series | Required annex | Features of connection | Type of charging |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazfit Bip / Pace | Mi Fit / Zepp | Requires reconnection for new functions | Contact pins |
| Amazfit GTS / GTR (1-2) | Zepp | Automatic transition to Zepp | Magnetic dock |
| Amazfit T-Rex / Cheetah | Zepp | Only Zepp, Extended Metrics | Magnetic dock |
| Mi Band 1-4 | Mi Fit | It only works through Mi Fit. | Removable capsule |
| Mi Band 5-8 | Zepp Life / Mi Fitness | Depends on the region version | Removable module |
⚠️ Warning: When you change your smartphone or reinstall the system, all workout data stored only in the watch memory will be lost. Before reset, make sure that the data is synchronized with the cloud in the application.
If none of the above methods worked and the device still doesn’t connect, perhaps the problem lies in the hardware compatibility of Bluetooth modules. Some older phone models use Bluetooth 4.0 protocols, which can work unstable with new watches that require Bluetooth 5.0 and higher to transfer large data packets.
Also worth checking is that the phone has multiple tracker apps installed at the same time (e.g. Mi Fit, Zepp, and Notify for Mi Band). Version conflict can block access to the Bluetooth adapter. Try leaving only one official app, uninstall it, restart the phone and install it clean.
In rare cases, cleaning the cache of Google Play services (on Android) or resetting network settings helps. If this does not help, and the clock is not visible on any device, perhaps there is a factory defect of the Bluetooth module, and the device should be returned under warranty.
💡
The stability of the connection is 90% dependent on the correct power saving settings in the smartphone, not on the watch itself.
