When a smart accessory stops seeing a smartphone, it always takes you by surprise, and you pick up a device, you hope to see the usual activity schedules and notifications, but the screen is empty or gives you a connection error, and this is a common problem that activity trackers from different generations face, and most often the failure is not a hardware failure, but a software conflict or a data protocol failure.
The Chinese giantโs modern wearables require a stable connection to work properly. If the Bluetooth module is not working properly, you lose access to notifications, pulse data and time synchronization. Itโs important to understand that the mating process is a complex security key exchange algorithm that can be interrupted at any stage due to external factors.
In this article, we will go into detail all the possible reasons why your gadget ignores commands, and suggest step-by-step solutions. We will not use complex technical terms without explanation, so you can quickly restore the system to work.
Before you panic and bring a device to service, you should eliminate software errors. In 90% of cases, the problem is solved by yourself through the right sequence of actions.
Basic Bluetooth settings and device visibility
The most obvious but often overlooked reason is the state of the wireless module itself: Make sure that Bluetooth on your smartphone is on and, more importantly, the device is visible to others. Some Android shells, in order to save energy, hide the phone from search if it is not in the settings menu.
It is also worth checking the list of previously paired devices. If your tracker was already on the list but the connection is lost, the old profile may interfere with the new connection. The system may try to restore the connection using outdated encryption keys, which causes the handshake error.
- ๐ฑ Make sure that Bluetooth settings include the โVisible for all devicesโ optionยป.
- ๐๏ธ Find the old bracelet profile in the list of associated devices and click โForgetโ or โDeleteยป.
- ๐ Reboot the Bluetooth module: Turn it off and turn it on again via the Quick Access Panel.
- ๐ก Check if the flight mode is on, which blocks all radio channels.
Pay attention to the distance. For primary synchronization, the gadgets must be in close proximity, literally in the vicinity of the device. 10-20 Walls, metal objects, even the human body can shield a weak signal.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you are trying to connect your device through the standard Bluetooth menu in the settings Android/iOS, Xiaomi requires the mandatory use of a proprietary app for initial setup.
It is also important to consider the operating system version. On very old versions of Android (below 6.0) or iOS (below 9.0), new encryption protocols may not be supported.
Problems with Mi Fit and access rights
The main gateway for communication between the phone and the wearable device is an app. It used to be Mi Fit, now it's Zepp Life or Mi Fitness. If the app doesn't have the necessary permissions, it won't physically be able to detect the gadget, even if Bluetooth is working properly.
A common mistake is not having a location permit (Geolocation). In Android, this is a security requirement: for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to work, network scanning must be accompanied by access to GPS. Without GPS enabled, device search often doesn't start or stops.
Check the permission list in your smartphone settings. The app needs access to:
- ๐ Location (always allowed).
- ๐ Notifications (to broadcast them on screen).
- ๐โโ๏ธ Physical activity (for pedometer).
- ๐ Contacts and call logs (to determine the name of the caller).
If you recently updated an app or operating system, your privacy settings may have reset. Go to Settings โ Apps โ Zepp Life (or Mi Fitness) โ Permissions and make sure all switches are active.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On smartphones Xiaomi with a shell MIUI HyperOS or Aggressive energy saving can kill the application process in the background. Be sure to remove battery restrictions for the tracker app.
It is also worth trying to clear the app cache. Accumulated temporary files may contain errors that prevent the search service from running normally. Go to the application management and select Clear cache without deleting user data unless you want to reset the settings.
Software version conflict and need for update
Software mismatches are one of the most insidious causes of problems: The firmware on the bracelet itself may be too old for a new application, or vice versa, the application requires a more recent version of the tracker OS to work with new features.
Often, when you first connect, the application offers to update the firmware, but the process freezes or ends in an error, at which point the device can go into standby mode or block the connection, waiting for the procedure to be completed.
What to do in such a situation:
- Make sure that the charge of the bracelet is at least 20-30%.
- Connect your phone to a stable Wi-Fi network, as the update via mobile internet may be interrupted.
- Do not turn off the smartphone screen during the firmware process.
If the update is interrupted, the device may not connect, in which case only a full reset will help (see section below). It is also worth checking for updates for the application itself in Google Play or AppStore. Developers regularly release patches that fix compatibility bugs.
Comparison of models and protocol compatibility
Not all Xiaomi devices are the same. The table below shows the main differences in connection approaches for different lines, as this often causes confusion among users.
| Model of the device | Recommended annex | Critical setting | Feature of connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Band 4/5/6/7/8 | Zepp Life / Mi Fitness | GPS and Bluetooth | Requires reset via the bracelet menu when changing the phone |
| Mi Watch Lite/Color | Mi Fitness | Android Permissions | Sensitive to Android (Android 6.0+ is needed) |
| Amazfit (formerly Xiaomi) | Zepp | Mi/Zepp account | Use a separate ecosystem, not visible in Mi Home |
| Mi Smart Band 8 Pro | Mi Fitness | Update of the PO | Requires a mandatory update at the first launch |
As you can see from the table, confusion between the Zepp Life and Mi Fitness apps is a common mistake: New models (starting with the Band 7 and the Watch S1) are actively migrating to the Mi Fitness ecosystem, while older models work better with Zepp Life. Trying to connect a new bracelet through an old app can lead to the fact that the device simply will not be found in the search.
Additionally, Amazfit-branded devices, while part of Xiaomiโs ecosystem, require a separate account and Zepp app. They wonโt work through the standard Mi Home or Mi Wear without special crutches.
Resetting and re-binding
When the program dances with the drum donโt help, there is a โheavy artilleryโ โ a full reset โ which will return the device to the factory settings, removing all accumulated data and configuration errors.
Most Mi Band models reset through the tracker's menu, and you need to find System or Settings, scroll to Unbind or Reset. Confirm the action.
Once reset, the device will reboot and go into pairing mode, so you can now re-start the in-app search on the phone, which solves the problem in 95 percent of cases where previous methods were powerless.
- ๐ Charge the device before resetting.
- ๐ฒ Remove the tracker app from your phone and install it again.
- ๐ Start searching for a new device in the application.
- โ Confirm the pairing by pressing the bracelet screen (if required).
If the bracelet does not have a touch screen or menu (as on the old Mi Band 1S), the reset can be done by holding the touch button (touchpad) for a long time for 10-15 seconds until a vibration or reset icon appears.
โ ๏ธ Warning: After resetting, all workout data not synced to the cloud will be lost.Make sure you back up if possible.
Hardware malfunctions and rare cases
If none of the software methods worked, it might be the hardware. The Bluetooth module blocks in the trackers are very tiny and sensitive to impact and moisture. Even if the device is moisture-proof, steam in the sauna or temperature drops can break the tightness and oxidize the contacts.
It's also worth checking the battery. If the bracelet is several years old, the lithium polymer battery could degrade, and it can show charge, but it doesn't give enough current to run a powerful Bluetooth transmitter, which causes the module to shut down all the time.
Signs of hardware breakdown:
- ๐ The device discharges quickly (in a couple of hours).
- ๐ The signal is interrupted even in the vicinity of the phone.
- ๐ฅ The body of the device is very warm when trying to connect.
- ๐ The screen goes out or works with artifacts.
In rare cases, the problem may be in the smartphone itself. The Bluetooth antenna in the phone may be damaged (for example, after a fall) or muffled with a metal case.Try to connect the bracelet to another phone to rule out a breakage of the smartphone.
