The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 fitness bracelet has become a real bestseller thanks to the combination of functionality and affordable price. However, many users face a situation when you need to turn off the device and you do not have a smartphone at hand - you are discharged, lost or simply do not want to use it. Unlike the newer models (Mi Band 4/5/6/7), where the shutdown is implemented through the menu, in the third version, this process has its nuances.
In this article, we will look at all possible ways to disable the Mi Band 3 without a phone, from a standard reset to a forced battery discharge, focusing on situations where the bracelet is getting stuck, does not respond to touch or requires a complete reset, and learn what actions can damage the device, and how to avoid typical errors.
Why Mi Band 3 canβt be turned off like a smartphone
Unlike phones or tablets, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 does not have a physical power button.
- π Energy efficiency: the device is optimized for minimal consumption, and a complete shutdown contradicts the logic of the fitness tracker (it should monitor activity around the clock).
- π± Application Dependence: By default, bracelet management is sharpened for Mi Fit or Zepp Life, where the basic functions are implemented, including resetting.
- π οΈ Hardware limitations: minimalist display and no additional buttons do not allow you to add the "Switch off" item in the menu.
However, the manufacturer has provided alternative shutdown methods, which we will discuss below. It is important to understand that "turning off" in the context of the Mi Band 3 more often means forced reset or going into deep sleep mode, rather than a complete shutdown, as in a smartphone.
Method 1: Standard reset via the bracelet menu
This is the safest method, and it doesn't require any additional devices, and it's suitable if the bracelet is touch-sensitive and not locked.
- Swipe your finger across the Mi Band 3 screen to the left or right until you find the More section (or More in English firmware).
- Slip it, then scroll down to Reset.
- Confirm the action by clicking on the tick or swiping in the specified direction (depending on the firmware version).
After that, the bracelet will reboot and return to factory settings. Note that this method does not turn off the device completely, but only resets it. Additional steps will be required to completely turn off the device (see the next section).
Charge the bracelet to at least 20%|Make sure there are no cracks on the screen (they can block touches)|Remember or take pictures of your current settings|Untie the bracelet from your Mi Fit account (if you plan to sell it)-->
β οΈ Warning: If the bracelet doesn't turn on after reset, plug it into a charge for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the reset causes the capacitors to discharge and the device takes time to recover.
Method 2: Forced shutdown through battery discharge
If the bracelet doesn't respond to touch, or if you want to turn it off completely, you can wait for the battery to run out. This method takes time, but it's guaranteed to shut it down.
- π Disconnect the bracelet from the charger (if it was connected).
- β³ Leave it active (for example, turn on a workout mode or alarm) to speed up the discharge.
- π After 12-24 hours (depending on the level of charge), the bracelet will automatically turn off.
To speed up the process, you can use the phone search mode (if the bracelet was associated with the smartphone before). Activate the Find Device function in Mi Fit - the bracelet will vibrate and illuminate, which further drains the battery.
| Charge level | Discharge time (when used actively) | Discharge time (standby) |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | 8:10 hours | 20-24 hours |
| 50% | 4-6 hours | 10-12 hours |
| 20% | 1-2 hours | 4-6 hours |
β οΈ Warning: Do not use heating or cooling of the bracelet (e.g. in the refrigerator or under the sun) to discharge the battery and cause irreversible failure.
Method 3: Hardware reset (if the bracelet is getting stuck)
If the Mi Band 3 is stuck on the logo, doesn't respond to touch, or reboots cyclically, hardware reset will help. This method simulates battery extraction, but requires care.
- Remove the bracelet capsule from the strap.
- Take a thin plastic item (such as a mediator or credit card).
- Carefully slap the lid on the back of the capsule, where the contacts for charging are located.
- Under the lid, you'll see a reset button (a small hole or a micro-switch) press and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds.
The reset button on the Mi Band 3 is located next to the charging contacts and can be hidden by a protective film. If you can't press it, check if the film or dirt is disturbing.
After the hardware reset, the bracelet should vibrate and reset. If this does not happen, repeat the procedure or try to connect the device to charge for 5-10 minutes, and then reset again.
What to do if the reset button does not work?
Method 4: Shutting down by connecting to another phone
If you have access to another smartphone (not necessarily yours), you can turn off the bracelet via the Mi Fit or Zepp Life app, a method that is suitable if you donβt want to wait for battery life to run out or are afraid of damaging the device with a hardware reset.
Algorithm:
- Install the Mi Fit app on the second phone (available for Android and iOS).
- Register a new account or sign in to an existing one (if the bracelet was linked to another profile, a reset will be required).
- Connect the Mi Band 3 to your phone via Bluetooth.
- Go to the bracelet settings in the app and select Disable the device or Reset to factory.
After that, the bracelet will reboot and disconnect from the previous account, and if the purpose was to turn off, after reset, just do not connect it to charge.
π‘
If you donβt have a second phone but you have a tablet or laptop with Bluetooth, you can use an Android emulator (like BlueStacks) to install Mi Fit. However, this method requires technical skills and is not always stable.
Method 5: Use of third-party applications (for advanced users)
There are alternative Mi Band management apps that allow you to perform activities that are not available in the standard Mi Fit, such as Notify & Fitness or Tools & Mi Band (available on Google Play), which can offer the option of deep shutdown or forced reboot.
Instructions:
- π± Install one of the applications on the smartphone.
- π Connect Mi Band 3 via Bluetooth.
- π§ Under Advanced or Developer options, find Power off or Reboot.
- β οΈ Be careful: not all third-party apps are compatible with Mi Band 3, and using them can lead to data loss or disruptions.
Before using this method, check the reviews of the app and make sure it supports Mi Band 3 (some programs only work with new models).
π‘
Third-party apps may give you more control over the wristband, but using them gives you no Xiaomi warranty.
What to do if the bracelet does not turn on after switching off
Sometimes, after a forced shutdown, Mi Band 3 doesn't want to turn on.
- π Deep discharge β the battery is discharged to the level at which the controller blocks charging.
- π οΈ Software failure β firmware is damaged and the bracelet cannot boot.
- π§ Getting moisture β even if the bracelet is waterproof (standard) IP68), contact could be oxidized.
Decisions:
- Connect to the charge for 30 to 60 minutes. Sometimes it takes time for the battery controller to wake up.
- Try another cable or adapter.Use the original Xiaomi charger (5V/1A).
- Perform a hardware reset (see Method 3) right on a charge β this can start the recovery process.
- If nothing works, contact the service center, you may need to flash or replace the battery.
β οΈ Warning: Don't try to disassemble the bracelet capsule yourself, it will cause water resistance to be lost and the warranty is void. The adhesives are used inside, and reassembly without special equipment is virtually impossible.
