Owners of Xiaomi fitness trackers often face a situation where you need to accurately identify the device, but the external differences between generations are minimal. This is required to find compatible straps, install the right dials or if you have problems with connection in the Mi Fitness app. Without accurate knowledge of the modification of the gadget, you can easily download incompatible software or purchase the wrong accessory.
There are several proven ways to identify a particular version of the tracker, from visual inspection to system logs. Model identification is the first step in properly configuring any wearable device, especially given the huge number of revisions the Chinese giant has produced. In this guide, we will break down all the methods, from simple to advanced, that will help you understand the Mi Smart Band line.
The most obvious, but not always accessible, way is to search for markings on the back of the case or on the original packaging. However, if the box has long been thrown away and the inscriptions on the device itself have worn off from sweat and moisture, you will have to resort to digital methods. Software identification via a smartphone gives the most accurate result, including information about the firmware version and hardware revision.
Visual identification by external signs
Initial inspection of the device eliminates most doubts, as each generation of the Mi Band has unique design features. For example, the models from the fifth to the seventh version differ in the shape of the capsule and the way the strap is attached. If your tracker capsule is removed completely and has an elongated oval shape, it is likely one of the early generations, up to the Mi Band 4.
Since the sixth series, the design has changed, with the screen larger and the edges of the capsule more rounded, allowing for a wider range of straps. Why can't the app see the bracelet?

On the devices themselves, starting with the Mi Band 5 and later, there is a built-in menu that allows you to (view) basic information. How to distinguish the original from the fake model
The wearables market is full of copies that look one-on-one, but they are often defined differently in software, and fakes can be simply called the Smart Band or have strange model codes that don't match Xiaomi's nomenclature. The original device is always correctly defined in Mi Fitness.
Note the quality of the pairing. The original Mi Band requires the pairing code to be confirmed on the bracelet screen. If the device is connected without a confirmation request or offers to install an unknown application (not from the Google Play/App Store), you are likely to be a fake.
Fakes also often have stripped down features: no NFC, less screen brightness, no automatic brightness adjustment. In the application, they can appear as older models, such as the Mi Band 5 instead of the 7, even if they look the same on the outside.
