Synchronizing wearables with a mobile device is the foundation for the entire smart health ecosystem. Xiaomi fitness bracelets are deservedly at the forefront of the market due to their availability and functionality, but the initial setup often raises questions for beginners. Proper pairing ensures real-time transmission of heart rate, steps and sleep data, which is critical for analyzing physical activity.
The process of establishing a connection between a gadget and a smartphone seems trivial, but it hides many nuances depending on the operating system and the version of the application. Xiaomi uses its own encryption protocols, so the standard Bluetooth menu of a smartphone works only partially here. In this guide, we will discuss in detail the algorithm of actions for successful activation of the tracker, and also consider the typical errors that occur when trying to start using the device.
To get started, you’ll need not only the bracelet itself, but also a stable internet connection on the phone to initially register an account. The Bluetooth module must be activated and geolocation enabled, as modern versions of Android require access to location to scan peripherals. Ignoring these basic requirements often results in the phone simply “not seeing” the accessory, even though they’re physically a couple of centimeters apart.
The first step is always to install the right software, as Xiaomi’s ecosystem has undergone significant changes in recent years. Mi Fit was the main application, but now its functionality is fully transferred to the Zepp Life app (for the global market) or integrated into Mi Fitness. The choice of specific software depends on the model of your bracelet: older versions (Mi Band 1-4) work better with Zepp, while Mi Band 6, 7, 8 and later often require the installation of Mi Fitness.
Once you install the app, you need to create an account or log into an existing Xiaomi Account profile. Without authorization, data synchronization is impossible, since all statistics are stored in the cloud. It is critical to remember that the region in the application and the region in the Mi Account must match, otherwise the device may not be determined by the server or work with restrictions. Once you log in, you will see the main screen with a suggestion to add a new device, which is the starting point for connecting.
Preparation of the smartphone and compatibility check
Before trying to link devices, make sure your smartphone meets the minimum technical requirements. Android is usually version 6.0 and higher, and iOS is iOS 12.0 or later. The phone’s RAM also plays a role: on low-volume budget models, background synchronization processes can be forced to terminate by the system, leading to permanent connection breaks.
An important step is to properly configure the permissions for the application. Modern operating systems strictly control the permissions, without which the software will not be able to properly interact with the Bluetooth adapter. You need to manually allow access to geolocation, Bluetooth, notifications and background work of the application. Without these permissions, the bracelet will be visible in the list, but the connection will be interrupted at the authorization stage.
⚠️ Note: If you have a Xiaomi phone with a shell MIUI or HyperOS, be sure to turn on Autostart for Zepp Life or Mi Fitness. The aggressively clears memory and can kill the synchronization process, which will stop notifications coming in.
It’s also worth checking out the Bluetooth protocol version. Although the standard is backward compatible, Bluetooth 5.0 and higher are desirable for new bracelet models to work smoothly. Outdated modules may not support the necessary energy-saving BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) profiles, which will result in fast battery drain on both the phone and tracker.
Instructions: Connect via Zepp Life (for Mi Band 1-5)
For classic fitness tracker models, the algorithm remains validated and robust. After you install the Zepp Life app and log in, go to the Profile tab in the lower right corner of the interface, and that's where the management menu for all connected gadgets and health services is located.
Click on Add Device and select the Bracelet (or Tracker) category. The app will start scanning the surrounding space. At this point, make sure the bracelet screen is active and displays a Bluetooth icon or a Bluetooth icon. QR-code if the model requires confirmation, the distance between the phone and the bracelet must not exceed 1-2 yards in search.
When your device (e.g. Mi Band 4) appears on the list, click on it. A confirmation code may appear on your smartphone screen and on your bracelet display. Check the numbers and click the tag on the tracker to confirm pairing, and then the process of synchronizing time and updating the base firmware will begin.
☑️ Checklist of successful connection
Once paired successfully, the app will suggest setting up social media and call notifications, an important step because push notifications can be turned off by default to save resources, and you can flexibly configure which apps will vibrate on your wrist and which ones will be ignored.
Customize new models with Mi Fitness
More modern devices such as the Mi Smart Band 6, 7, 8 and Watch series increasingly require the use of the Mi Fitness app (formerly known as Xiaomi Wear).
The connection process here also starts with the Devices tab. Click the add button and select Add Device. Unlike older models, newer wristbands often use fast-pairing technology through scanning. QR-If the bracelet is new and has not been tied to anything before, it will go into pairing mode automatically when it is first turned on.
An important difference is that the firmware update is mandatory immediately after you connect. Mi Fitness strictly monitors the software versions, and without the current firmware, many features, such as measuring SpO2 or new dials, may not be available. The update process can take from 5 to 15 minutes, during which the phone and bracelet must be nearby.
