Owning modern wearables is a huge opportunity for health monitoring, but it all starts with the first step: pairing your device with your smartphone correctly. If you've just unpacked a brand-new fitness tracker and don't know where to start, don't worry. The setup process is quite simple, but requires a certain sequence of actions to ensure that all functions work smoothly.
Many users are struggling to choose an app, as Xiaomiβs ecosystem has changed in recent years, with Mi Fit being the standard, but now the main platform is Zepp Life (formerly known as Mi Fit) or the new Mi Fitness app (formerly Xiaomi Wear).
In this article, we will take a closer look at how to connect Xiaomiβs smart bracelet to Android and iOS, look at the nuances of working with different versions of operating systems, and help solve typical connection problems. You will learn why it is important not to try to link a device directly through your phoneβs Bluetooth settings and what permissions are critical for correct data synchronization.
Preparation of the device and smartphone for pairing
Before you start apps and look for signals, make sure both devices are ready to communicate. First of all, remove the tracker from the package and, if it is equipped with a protective film on the screen or pulse sensor, be sure to remove it. Charge the device to at least 20-30%, as at low charge, the Bluetooth module can work unstable or go into sleep mode too quickly.
There are a few preparatory steps to be taken on your smartphone. Make sure Bluetooth is on and visible for other devices. Also check that the phone has current versions of the operating system. Android is usually version 6.0 and higher, iOS is 10.0 and higher, although newer bracelet models may have stricter requirements.
It's important to understand that trying to connect the bracelet through the standard Bluetooth menu in your phone settings often leads to errors. The system may show a message "Conjugated but not connected" or not see the device at all. This is normal, since the data protocol in wearable electronics is different from the protocol for connecting headphones or speakers.

Before you start setting up, restart your smartphone β this will clear the cache of Bluetooth services and increase the chances of quickly detecting the device.
If you have previously used a Xiaomi bracelet and linked it to another account, be sure to reset to factory settings. To do this, on the tracker itself, find the System or More menu and select Unbind or Reset. Without this procedure, the new phone will not be able to gain control rights to the gadget.
Selecting and installing the right application
The key to the setup process is choosing software. Xiaomi's ecosystem is divided into two main areas, and it depends on the model of your bracelet which app you will need. For most popular models, such as the Mi Band 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and their Pro versions, as well as the Mi Smart Band 7 Pro, the main application is the Zepp Life.
However, newer devices released as part of the brand globalization strategy, such as the Mi Band 8 Active, Mi Smart Band 8 Pro or Smart Band 9 series, may require the Mi Fitness app (sometimes called Xiaomi Wear). QR-code in the instruction or on the device box.
- π± Zepp Life: Classic application for most Mi Band trackers, rich functionality and history of accumulated data.
- β Mi Fitness: A new application with an updated interface, focused on the latest models and integration with the HyperOS ecosystem.
- π Mi Health: A data aggregator that can transfer statistics from other apps, but not necessarily linked to the bracelets directly.
Download applications should be exclusively from official stores: Google Play for Android or App Store for iPhone. APK-files or modified versions of programs may lead to leakage of personal data or unstable synchronization.
If you are in Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan, when creating a Zepp Life account, it sometimes makes sense to choose a region called Russia or Kazakhstan to make the servers work faster. SIM-map, but it can be changed in the profile settings.
Connection process via Zepp Life
Consider the most common scenario, connecting via the Zepp Life app. After logging in, go to the Profile tab (bottom right icon). In the "My devices" section, click the "Plus icon" button. Here, you need to choose the right category: for trackers, choose "Tracker" and for watches, "Clock".
The app will request permission to use Bluetooth and geolocation. Geolocation (GPS) on Android is mandatory for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), without it, scanning devices is impossible. Give all the permissions you request, otherwise the search can go on indefinitely.
βοΈ Checking before connection
Next, you'll start looking for devices. If the bracelet is in pairing mode (on the screen, it might be possible to do this). QR-A code or a pulsating logo, it'll appear in the list. Click on the device name. The tracking screen and the smartphone screen will show the confirmation codes. Make sure they match, and click "Confirm" or tap the bracelet screen.
Once you pair successfully, you'll start synchronizing your time and firmware, so don't interrupt this process and keep the devices close by. Importantly, during the initial setup, the bracelet may reset several times -- this is the normal behavior when you update the microcode, and when you're done, you'll see the main screen with a pedometer and a pulse.
If the app doesn't see the device, try to exit the search menu, close the app completely (unload from memory) and start the search again. Also make sure the bracelet isn't connected to another phone in the background.
Customization through Mi Fitness for new models
For owners of the latest gadgets, the process may differ in interface, but the logic remains similar. Open the Mi Fitness app and log in to Xiaomi account. On the home screen, click on the + icon or select Add Device.
Unlike Zepp Life, the interface is more minimal. The app will define the model of the device. If you have a Mi Band 8 or newer, the system may suggest scanning. QR-The code that you see on the bracelet screen when you first turn on, speeds up the process and eliminates model selection errors.
| Parameter | Zepp Life | Mi Fitness |
|---|---|---|
| Supported models | Mi Band 1-8 (basic) | Mi Band 6-9, Watch S, Watch Pro |
| Interface. | Classic, lots of data. | Modern, simplified |
| Synchronization | Automatic when opened | Background and schedule. |
| Dial shop | A huge choice. | Growing base, 3D dials |
During the setup process, Mi Fitness can offer to configure notifications and access to contacts. It is recommended to allow access to contacts if you want the bracelet to display the names of callers, not just numbers. It is also worth turning on time synchronization over the network, so that the watch always shows the exact time without manual adjustment.
Pay special attention to setting up notifications from messengers. In new versions of Android software (12, 13, 14), the aggressively manages background processes. You will need to manually allow the Mi Fitness application to run in the background and not subject it to battery optimization.

For new Xiaomi bracelet models, using native Mi Fitness app provides support 3D-dials and new animation features not available in older programs.
Solving Connection and Synchronization Problems
Despite the simplicity of the procedure, users often face technical difficulties. One of the most common problems is that the bracelet is visible in the phone's Bluetooth list, but not in the application, in which case you need to go to the Bluetooth settings of the smartphone, find the device (for example, "Mi Band 6") and click "Forget the device" or "Untie".
β οΈ Warning: Never attempt to tie the bracelet solely through the Bluetooth settings in your phone. This creates a connection conflict and the app will stop seeing the device!
If the bracelet is not on or the screen is black, set it on charge for 10-15 minutes. The lithium polymer batteries in the trackers are small, and at deep discharge they need time to gain the minimum voltage to start the power controller.
Another common situation is a data synchronization error: If the steps are not transmitted or the pulse is not updated, try the following:
- π Forcedly close the application and run it again.
- π‘ Turn off and turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone.
- π Check if the bracelet is discharged (set on charging).
- π± Check the permissions: in the phone settings, find the Zepp app Life/Mi Fitness and make sure Auto Start, Background Work and Location Access are allowed.
On Xiaomi, Redmi and other devices POCO shelled MIUI or HyperOS often runs an aggressive energy saving system. β Annexes β All applications β Zepp Life (or Mi Fitness) Select Battery and set No Limits mode. Also turn on Auto Start. Without these actions, the system can kill the sync process, and you won't receive notifications.
What if the bracelet is frozen and does not respond to touch?
Set up notifications and personalization
Once you've successfully connected, it's time to customize the wristband, and the main value of the tracker is notifications. In the app, go to Notifications or Notification Settings, and here you'll see a list of all the apps installed on the phone.
Activate the switches for the programs you want to see messages on your wrist: WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, SMS, calls. Remember that the bracelet only broadcasts the notification text, it does not allow you to respond to messages (with the rare exception of models with a keyboard or voice input).
You should also set up your sleep and heart rate monitoring, and in the standard settings, your heart rate is measured every 10 or 30 minutes, and for more accurate statistics, especially if you're exercising, you can set a 1 minute interval, but this will significantly increase your battery consumption.
β οΈ Warning: Constant monitoring of the pulse every minute can reduce the battery life of the bracelet 14 days 5-7 Find a balance between data accuracy and autonomy.
Don't forget to adjust the wrist lift to turn on the screen. This feature allows you to see the time just by looking at your hand. Sensitivity can be changed. If the screen lights up too often when you swing your hands, reduce sensitivity.
For sports activities in the app, you can adjust the order of the displayed metrics, for example, for running, pace and pulse, and for swimming, the number of strokes, and you can change the order of the widgets by clamping the corresponding item in the application menu and dragging it.
