The Xiaomi Mi Band fitness bracelets have long been one of the most popular wearables due to the combination of affordable price, wide functionality and reliable operation. However, even such proven gadgets sometimes have difficulties during the first connection to a smartphone, especially when it comes to synchronizing via Bluetooth with Android devices, where the variety of OS versions and chip manufacturers can create nuances.
In this article, we will not only examine the basic Mi Band pairing process (including the Mi Band 6/7/8 and Smart Band Pro models), but also look at the typical errors that interfere with the stable operation of the bracelet. You will learn how to properly install the official Mi Fitness app (formerly Zepp Life), configure notifications, update firmware and even restore connection if the bracelet suddenly “falls off”, and pay special attention to the hidden Android settings that can block the background of the application and lead to a communication break.
Preparation for connection: what to check before pairing
Before you start connecting, make sure your smartphone and bracelet are ready to sync, and neglecting these steps often leads to errors like “failed to connect” or endless search for the device.
First, check compatibility: the Mi Band officially supports Android 6.0 and higher, but for stable operation, a version at least Android 8.0 is recommended. On older devices (for example, Android 5.x) you may have problems with notifications and data synchronization. Also make sure that the phone is enabled Bluetooth 4.0 or later – earlier versions of the protocol do not support the energy-efficient BLE connection necessary for the bracelet to work.
- 📱 Android version: minimum 6.0, optimally 8.0+ (Check in the settings → The phone).
- 🔋 Bracelet charge: at least 20% (at low charge, the Mi Band may not appear in the list of available devices).
- 📲 Free space: The phone must have at least 100MB to install the Mi Fitness app.
- 🔒 Permits: Turn off VPN Antiviruses – they can block the connection to Xiaomi servers.
If you are updating the bracelet firmware or reconnecting it after resetting, pre-remove the old version of the Mi Fit or Zepp Life app - they are outdated and may conflict with Mi Fitness. It is also useful to reboot the phone: this clears the cache of the Bluetooth module, which is especially true for Samsung and Xiaomi devices with custom shells.
Installation of the official Mi Fitness application
Since 2023, Xiaomi has combined all its fitness apps under a single platform, Mi Fitness (formerly Zepp Life and Mi Fit), using third-party apps like Notify & Fitness or Tools & Mi Band, but is fraught with problems with synchronizing steps, pulses and notifications, so we recommend installing only official software.
Download Mi Fitness from Google Play or from Xiaomi's official website (if your region is not supported). Avoid APKs from third-party sources - they may contain modified code leading to account lock.
- Launch the application and select the language (Russian is available by default).
- Sign in through your Xiaomi account (if not, register a new one). Without linking to your account, the bracelet will work in a limited mode (for example, there will be no training history).
- Click Add Device (+) and select your Mi Band model from the list.
If the app does not find the bracelet, check:
- 🔍 Visibility of Mi Band in Bluetooth phone settings (should be displayed as MI Band X or Mi Smart Band).
- 🔄 Reset the bracelet: to do this, put it on charge and press the button 10 seconds (before vibration).
- 📵 Turn off Do Not Disturb mode on your phone – it can block Bluetooth scanning.
💡
If you have a Huawei or Honor phone, turn off the “App Energy Saving” feature in your battery settings before connecting. These devices aggressively close the background processes, which prevents synchronization.
Step-by-step: how to connect Mi Band to Android via Bluetooth
Now, to the interface process itself, follow the instructions carefully, and even one step can fail.
- Activate Bluetooth on your phone: go to Settings → Connections → Bluetooth and turn on the module. Make sure the phone is visible for other devices ("Make Visible" or "Detection Mode").
- Turn on the bracelet: If the Mi Band is new, it activates automatically when you first connect to charging. If the bracelet has already been used, click the touch button to wake the screen.
- Run pairing in Mi Fitness: Open the app and click Add Device. Select your Mi Band model from the list. Click Connect and wait for the phone to find the bracelet (it can take up to 30 seconds).
Confirm the connection.
Update the firmware
Mi Fitness
Do not interrupt the upgrade process – this can lead to the bracelet “bricking” that will require resetting through the charger.
If at the stage of code confirmation there is an error “I could not connect”, try:
- 🔄 Reboot your phone and bracelet.
- 📱 Remove the bracelet from the list of paired devices in the phone's Bluetooth settings and repeat pairing.
- 🛠️ Reset the Mi Band settings to factory (in Mi Fitness: "Device profile" → Drop it»).

Setup of notifications and data synchronization
Once successfully connected, the Mi Band will display basic information (time, steps, pulse), but to work properly, you need to adjust notifications and background synchronization. Without this, the bracelet will not vibrate when calling or texting, and sleep and training data may not be stored.
Open Mi Fitness, go to your bracelet profile and select:
- 🔔 Notifications: Enable the "Show Notifications" option and select apps (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail). for Android 10+ Additional permission to access notifications is required (issued automatically when first requested).
- ⏱️ Autosynchronization: Set a data update interval (recommended every 30 minutes).
- 🏃 Training: set up automatic activity recognition (walking, running, cycling).
On Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO phones, check out:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management → Mi Fitness.
- Enable the options: “Autostart” (allows you to work in the background); “No battery restrictions” (prevents the application from closing by the system); “Allow you to change system settings” (you need to work the notifications correctly).
Why are there no notifications on the Mi Band?
Solving common connection problems
Even with the right setup, the Mi Band may occasionally shut down or not sync data, and let's look at typical scenarios and how to fix them.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The bracelet is not on the Bluetooth device list. | Low charge, conflict with other BLE devices | Charge the bracelet to 50%, turn off other wearable gadgets (earphones, smart watches) |
| Persistent communication breaks | Android Energy Saving Shuts Down Mi Fitness | Add the app to the battery optimization exceptions (see section above) |
| No firmware updates. | Weak Wi-Fi or mobile signal | Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network and try again |
| No notifications of calls are coming. | No permission to access call logs | Give permission to Settings → Applications → Mi Fitness → Permissions |
| The bracelet doesn't count steps | Incorrect calibration or wearing on the wrong hand | Recalibrate the pedometer in Mi Fitness and wear the bracelet on a non-dominant hand |
If the Mi Band is connected but the data is not synced, try:
- In Mi Fitness, go to “Device Profile → Sync Data” and start the process manually.
- Check whether the power saving mode blocks the background operation of the application (relevant for Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo).
- Remove the Mi Fitness cache in your phone settings (Settings → Applications → Mi Fitness → Memory → Clear the cache).
💡
If the bracelet stopped connecting after the Android update, reset it to the factory settings and perform the pairing again. This is due to changes in the Bluetooth protocol in new versions of the OS.
How to Update Mi Band Firmware with Mi Fitness
Regular firmware updates fix bugs, add new features (like new dials or workout modes) and improve connection stability. However, the upgrade process has nuances, especially if you have an unstable Internet connection.
To update the Mi Band:
- Connect the bracelet to charge and make sure that the battery charge is at least 50%.
- Open Mi Fitness, go to the device profile and click on “Firmware Update” (if available).
- Confirm the download and wait until the process is complete. Do not disconnect the bracelet from charging and do not close the application until a successful update is reported.
Before using third-party applications:
- Back up your data in Mi Fitness (if possible).
- Turn off automatic synchronization in the official application to avoid conflicts.
- Remember that unofficial firmware can deprive you of warranty and lead to unstable operation of sensors.
⚠️ Note: apps like Mi Bandage or Mi Band Tools require root rights for full functionality. On modern phones, getting root could disrupt Google Pay and other secure services.
