Modern wearables like the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 are complex gadgets with their own operating system that can periodically encounter software failures. Users often notice that the tracker stops responding to touch, does not synchronize pulse data or simply hangs on the logo. In such situations, a standard screen switch is not enough, and a full reboot of the system is required to restore performance.
Unlike smartphones, most fitness bracelets donβt have a physical power button, making the restart process less obvious to beginners. There are several proven methods, ranging from programmatic reboot through menus to full reset to factory settings. Understanding the differences between these methods will help you save important workout data or, conversely, clean the device before selling.
In this article, we will take a look at all the ways you can reanimate your activity tracker, the regular menu features, the capabilities of the Mi Fitness mobile app (formerly Zepp Life), and the hardware methods of forced restart, and how to properly prepare your device for a firmware update to avoid critical errors.
Software reboot through the tracker menu
The safest and most recommended way to restart the device is to use the built-in settings menu, which is similar to turning off the smartphone through the software interface and does not pose a risk of data damage. First, you need to wake up the Mi Band 6 screen by raising your wrist or touching the touch zone.
Swipe your finger across the screen to the left or right until you find Settings (cog icon) and you should find System or Reboot option inside this section, depending on the version of firmware installed. Clicking on this item will initiate a safe termination of all processes and re-start the bracelet operating system.
β οΈ Note: If the tracker screen is completely black and does not respond to touch, this method will not work.
It takes no more than 30 seconds to process. During the reboot, the Mi logo or boot indicator may appear on the screen. Do not actively press the sensor at this point so as not to interrupt system processes. After turning on, check if the time is displayed and if the basic functions are working.
βοΈ The soft reboot algorithm
Using a regular menu ensures that all cache files are properly processed and the background applications are stopped correctly, the first step to take when there are minor interface glitches, and if the problem persists after the procedure, it is worth moving to deeper diagnostic methods.
Reboot via Mi Fitness or Zepp Life app
Wearable electronics are often more conveniently controlled through a conjugated smartphone than from the smallest screen. Mi Fitness and Zepp Life provide enhanced access to the tracker's system functions, including power management, which is especially useful if the wristband sensor is intermittent.
Open the app on your smartphone and make sure your device is Bluetooth connected. Go to your device profile (usually the Profile tab in the lower right corner, then the bracelet picture).
- π± Make sure that the smartphone is in close proximity to the bracelet (no further). 1-2 meters).
- π Check the battery level in the app β it should be above 20% for a safe reboot.
- π Click the βRebootβ or βRebootβ button in the application interface and confirm the action.
Once confirmed, the command will be sent to the tracker and it will automatically go to restart, and the advantage of this method is that the app will immediately show the connection status. If after the reboot the status "Not connected" does not change to "Connected", try updating the list of devices in the Bluetooth settings of the phone.
Importantly, this feature requires a stable connection to work. If an application writes βDevice Offline,β first synchronize data. Software restarting through the application also helps reset suspended sync services that can block the transmission of new notifications.
Forced reset (Hard Reset) when getting stuck
Situations where Xiaomi Mi Band 6 completely stops responding to any commands are called the systemβs βfreeze,β in which case the software methods are powerless because the interface does not respond.
The essence of the method is to hold the touch button for a long time. On most Xiaomi bracelet models, including the sixth version, you need to press the touch area and hold your finger for 15-20 seconds. The screen can go out and light up, but you need to continue holding until the logo appears.
β οΈ Warning: Do not use sharp objects or needles to affect the sensor, this may damage the oleophobic coating or the display itself.
If simple retention doesn't work, you can try the discharge-charge method. Leave the bracelet on the charger until the battery is fully discharged (if it's still on), or, conversely, put it on charge when it's off. Sometimes, a connection to the USB power supply initiates a hardware reset of the controller.
What to do if the bracelet warms up when hanging?
Forced reboot is data-safe because it simulates taking the battery out of old phones. It doesn't delete your settings or step history stored in memory. However, if the device freezes regularly, it may indicate a physical battery malfunction or need to flash it.
Full reset to factory settings
If the reboot doesnβt fix the bugs and the bracelet continues to malfunction, a full reset may be required, which returns the device to the βout of the boxβ state by removing all user data, dials, alarm clock settings and pairings, a radical but effective measure.
You can reset through the menu of the bracelet itself. Go to Settings β System β Reset (or Unbind). The device will request confirmation because the action is irreversible. Once confirmed, the tracker will clear the internal memory and reboot with factory settings.
Alternatively, through the app, find the Unbind option on the device menu, which will break the connection to the phone and initiate the data cleanup on the tracker itself, and then it can be tied as a new device.
| Parameter | Soft reset | Total reset | Forced restart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data retention | Yes. | No. | Yes. |
| Implementation time | 30 seconds. | 2-3 minutes | 20-40 seconds |
| The need for a PC | No. | No. | No. |
| Risk of losing settings | No. | 100% | No. |
Once reset, you'll need to re-pair with the Zepp Life or Mi Fitness app, and all steps and sleep data that were synchronized with the cloud before reset will be stored in your account, and local data that didn't make it to the server will be lost.
π‘
A complete reset is only necessary in case of critical software failures that are not eliminated by a normal restart, or before selling the device.
Reboot during firmware update
A special case that requires careful attention is a software update. The firmware firmware process is a critical operation. If there is a power failure or connection break at that point, the device can turn into a brick (stop turning on).
Usually, the update is automatically done when you connect to your smartphone. The app downloads the update pack and sends it to the bracelet. During this period, the Mi Band 6 screen displays the progress bar. It is strongly discouraged from trying to manually restart the device at this point.
- π« Do not press buttons or touch the sensor during the update.
- πΆ Keep your smartphone next to your bracelet without going further than 1 meter.
- π Make sure that the bracelet is at least 50% charged before the procedure.
If the update is 100% or in some intermediate value of more than 10 minutes, only then you can try a forced reboot. In most cases, modern versions of the software have a recovery mechanism, but the risk of damage to the bootloader remains.
π‘
Before installing a major firmware update, take a screenshot of the current settings or take a picture of the bracelet screen to know which settings have been set by default.
Once the upgrade is successful, the device always automatically restarts, which is the normal behavior of the system to use new configuration files, and if the bracelet is slower after the upgrade, give it 10-15 minutes to optimize the database in the background.
Typical problems and their solution
Even after a proper reboot, users may experience residual events, such as the bracelet turned on but no steps or notifications are received, and often the problem lies not in the device itself, but in the settings of the smartphone operating system or access rights.
Check if the phone is in Power Saving mode, which can block the background work of the Mi Fitness app, and it is also worth rechecking the permissions for Bluetooth and notifications. Sometimes re-pairing helps: remove the device from the phone's Bluetooth list and add again through the app.
β οΈ Warning: If the bracelet is cyclically rebooted (the logo is constantly burning and going out), this is a sign of damage to system files or a hardware malfunction of the battery.
In some cases, cleaning the app cache on your smartphone helps: Go to Android/iOS settings, find the bracelet app, and select Clear Cache. This won't delete your data, but will update temporary communication files.
Why does the bracelet not turn on after discharge?
Regular reboots (every 1-2 weeks) are recommended as a preventive measure, which helps to free RAM from temporary files and errors accumulated during continuous operation, prolongs the life of the device and ensures the stability of the sensors.
