Xiaomi Mi Band: How to distinguish the original from a fake – check in 5 minutes

Xiaomi Mi Band fitness bracelets have long been a hit with price-to-feature ratios. But popularity breeds fakes: According to AliExpress and Wildberries, up to 30% of Xiaomi-branded devices on the market are counterfeit. Fake bracelets not only work worse, but can explode when charged due to poor-quality batteries (cases recorded in 2023 in Russia and Ukraine).

We analyzed 15 fake models (from Mi Band 4 to Mi Band 8), compared them to the originals from the official Mi Store, and identified key differences. Importantly, some fakes even copy serial numbers, so checking on one trait will not give 100% guarantee. Use the integrated approach from this manual.

1.Packaging: 7 parts that give off a fake

The original Xiaomi Mi Band box is not just cardboard: it's autopsy-protected, has unique markings and holograms. Counterfeiting is often spared on packaging, and that's their weak spot.

• 📦 Material box: the original - dense matte cardboard with embossing of the Mi logo. Fake - glossy or thin, the logo is painted (erased with a finger).
• 🔍 Hologram: in the original it changes color when tilted (rainbow effect), on the fake - a static image or sticker.
• 📊 Barcode and serial number: the original matched the data on the bracelet and in the Mi Fitness app.
• 📄 Documentation: In the original - instruction on 10+ Languages (including Russian), certificate of conformity. Fakes often go without a booklet or with typos.

Pay special attention to the film on the box. The original tape is sealed with shrink tape with the Xiaomi logo, which you can't take off neatly, it tears. Counterfeiting uses regular scotch or tape without logos.

2. Appearance of the bracelet: 5 visual differences

Even if the packaging is perfect, check the bracelet itself.

• 🔘 Button: the original is drowned in the case and pressed softly. The fake is protruding or dangling.
• 💡 Screenlight: the original has a uniform brightness, fake - dark spots on the edges (especially noticeable on the Mi Band) 7/8).
• 🔗 Strap: original strap of thermoplastic elastomer (TPU) It doesn't stretch or smell chemical. It's hard or it smells pungent.
• 🔋 Charging connector: the original contacts are gold, the fake – copper or coated with paint (over time, it is erased).

Waterproof test: Original bracelets (starting with Mi Band 5) are 5 ATM certified, meaning they can withstand a 50-meter dive. Fakes often flow when washing hands. To check, drop the bracelet in a glass of water for 10 minutes, the original will remain dry inside.

If the seller refuses to show the bracelet in operation or only shows the packaging, this is a reason to be wary. Ask to shoot a video with the screen on and the settings menu.

3. Software: How to Check the Firmware

The most reliable way to detect a fake is to connect the bracelet to the official Mi Fitness app (formerly Mi Fit), which often doesn't sync or shows errors.

1. Download Mi Fitness from the App Store or Google Play (not from third-party sites!).
2. Register with your Xiaomi account (required!).
3. Add a new device and select your Mi Band model.
4. If the bracelet is not defined or defined as an "Unknown device", it is a fake.

Note the firmware version. Original bracelets are automatically updated through the app. For fakes, the software version often starts with 1.0.0.0 or 1.2.3.4, which is a sure sign of fake. For example, Mi Band 8 has the current firmware for June 2026 - 8.14.0.18.

Sensors and functionality: what the original can and what can not

Fake bracelets often mimic functions but do not work properly.

Vibration test: original bracelets vibrate with a clear amplitude, fakes - either too weak or with a delay. Ask the seller to send a test notification to the bracelet: the original will react instantly.

5. Serial number and check on the official website

Each original Xiaomi Mi Band has a unique serial number (S/N) that can be checked on the manufacturer’s website.

• On the box (under the barcode).
• In bracelet settings: Device profile → Device → Serial number.
• On the bracelet itself (under the touch button, you need to lid).

To verify:

1. Go to mi.com/global/verify.
2. Enter the serial number and code from the picture.
3. If the system gives an error or the data does not match the model, you are a fake.

Warning: Fraudsters sometimes clone serial numbers from original devices, and if the check goes through but the bracelet behaves suspiciously (e.g., it doesn't update), ask the retailer for a check from the official store.

The serial number must match on the box, the Mi Fitness app, and the bracelet itself, and the discrepancies are 100% evidence of a fake.

6.Price and place of purchase: where the risk of running into a fake is maximum

The average retail price of the original Xiaomi Mi Band 8 in Russia for June 2026 is 3 490-3 990 rubles. counterfeits are sold for 1,200-2 500 rubles, motivated by "shares" or "direct deliveries." Beware of proposals with wording:

• 🚩 "Original, but without a box" (often sold defective devices).
• 🚩 "European version (actually a fake with European firmware).
• 🚩 "New model, not yet on sale" (fraudsters use photo prototypes).

Safe places to buy:

• ✅ Official Mi Store (mi.com/ru).
• ✅ Authorized resellers: Svyaznoy, M.Video, Eldorado (check the availability of the certificate).
• ✅ Wildberries and Ozon – but only for rated sellers ≥4.9 and photo reviews.

⚠️ Attention: AliExpress and Taobao even sell gray devices without warranty in official Xiaomi stores. They may be original, but not intended for Russia (no Russification, problems with updates).

7 What to do if you have already bought a fake

If after checking it turned out that your Mi Band is fake, act according to the algorithm:

1. Gather evidence: take a picture of the bracelet, packaging, check, errors in the application.
2. Contact the seller: On the marketplaces (WB, Ozon) - through the return form (specify "non-compliance with the description"). In local stores - require expertise (under the law "On consumer protection" you can return the goods within 14 days).

Write a complaint.

• On AliExpress, open a dispute (My Orders → Open Dispute).
• In Rospotrebnadzor - if the seller refuses to return the money.
