Why Headphones Donβt Merge Automatically and What to Do About It
You got new ones out of the box. TWS-Xiaomi headphones (like Redmi Buds 4 Pro or Mi True Wireless Earphones 3) have Bluetooth on your smartphone, but instead of stereo, do you hear just one headphone? Or do the devices connect separately but not synchronize with each other? This problem is familiar to many owners of wireless equipment β and it is solved easier than it seems.
The reason is usually a mismatch of connection protocols or a malfunction of the Bluetooth chip on the smartphone/earbuds. On Xiaomi devices (including POCO and Redmi), the algorithm for combining headphones depends on the version of the MIUI, the model of the gadget, and even whether the headphones were previously paired with another phone. In this article, we will analyze all working methods from basic to advanced, including the hidden settings of the developer for forced synchronization.
Important: If your headphones support Dual Mode technology (such as Xiaomi Buds 3T Pro), they can be used separately or in pairs. But you need to adjust the mode correctly - read about this in the appropriate section.
Preparation: compatibility check and pre-settings
Before trying to combine headphones, make sure your equipment meets the minimum requirements:
- π± Version. MIUI: at least 12.5 (older versions may not have drivers for new headphone models). β The phone. β Version. MIUI.
- π§ Headphone model: should support Bluetooth 5.0 protocol+ (For example, Mi AirDots 3, Redmi Buds 5. Headphones with Bluetooth 4.2 (for example, Mi AirDots Basic) may not sync correctly.
- π Battery charge: both earbuds must be charged at least 30%. If the indicator on one flashes red, plug the case into charging for 10-15 minutes.
Also check if the headphones are connected to another device (laptop, tablet or second phone).
- Open the Settings. β Bluetooth on all devices that previously connected headphones.
- Find your model name in the list of paired devices and click βForgetβ (or βDisableβ).
- Return the headphones to the case, close it for 10 seconds, then pull them out again - this will reset the current connections.
Method 1: Standard Bluetooth connection (for most models)
This method works for 90% of Xiaomi headphones, including Redmi Buds 4 Active, Mi AirDots 3 Pro and others.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone: swipe down from the top edge of the screen and click on the Bluetooth icon (or go to Settings β Connections β Bluetooth).
- Take both earphones out of the case. They should automatically turn on (the indicators will flash white/blue).
- In the list of available devices, find the name of your headphones (for example, "Redmi Buds"). 4 Pro_L" and "Redmi Buds." 4 Pro_R"). Don't connect them separately!
- Wait for a single device with the model name (like the Redmi Buds 4 Pro) to come along, which means the headphones are synchronized.
If only individual headphones (" L" and " R") are displayed in the list, reset:
1.Put both headphones in the case and close the lid
2.Push and hold the button on the case (if any) for 15 seconds
3.Put out the headphones - the indicators should flash white/red at the same time
4. Repeat the attempt to connect-->
πΉ Note to Xiaomi owners 12/13 In the series, these models can trigger a Bluetooth sticking bug. If the headphones don't join together, restart the phone and try again.
π‘
If the headphones only connect one at a time, try connecting the right (" R") first and then the left (" L"). In some models, the main headphone is the right one, and it "pulls" the second one.
Method 2: Forced synchronization through Dual Mode
Dual Mode models (e.g. Xiaomi Buds 3T Pro, Redmi Buds 5 Pro) allow you to use headphones both individually and in pairs.
- Connect one headphone (such as the right one) to your phone via Bluetooth.
- Remove the second earphone from the case and hold the touchpad on it for 5 seconds until you hear the beep.
- The phone will have a second headphone on its Bluetooth list. Don't plug it in! Wait for the automatic pairing (the headphones will emit a double signal).
- Only one model name should remain on the list of devices (without the " L/R").
If the merger did not occur:
- π Reboot both headphones: place them in the case, close the lid for 10 seconds, then pull out.
- π± Reboot your smartphone (especially relevant for the POCO F3/F4, where there are hanging Bluetooth module).
- π§ Enable Developer Mode and activate the Bluetooth Debugging option (path: Settings) β The phone. β Version. MIUI β Press 7 times; then return to Settings β Additionally. β For developers).
What to do if Dual Mode is not working?
Method 3: Use of a proprietary application (for new models)
Headphones Xiaomi release after 2021 (for example, Xiaomi Buds 4, Redmi Buds 5 Pro) support management through official applications:
- π΅ Xiaomi Earbuds β for most models (available on Google Play).
Instructions for combining through Xiaomi Earbuds:
- Install the application and open it.
- Connect your headphones to your phone (even if they are defined as separate devices).
- In the main menu of the application, click on the headphone icon β Device settings β Combine headphones (or Dual Mode).
- Follow the instructions on the screen. The app will check compatibility and sync the devices.
If there is no option of association in the application:
β οΈ Warning: Update your headphone firmware through the Software Update section in the same app. Outdated software is a common cause of sync problems, especially on Redmi Buds 4 Lite and Mi AirDots 3 models.
| Model headphones | Supported annex | Required version of MIUI | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Buds 4 | Xiaomi Earbuds | 13.0+ | Automatic firmware update, Dual Mode setup |
| Redmi Buds 5 Pro | Xiaomi Earbuds | 12.5+ | LDAC support, manual audio delay setting |
| Mi AirDots 3 | Mi Home | 12.0+ | Requires registration in Mi Account for updates |
| Redmi Buds 4 Active | No app. | Anybody. | Synchronization only through standard Bluetooth |
Method 4: Manually combine through developer settings
If standard methods donβt work, try forcibly resetting your Bluetooth cache and enabling hidden options, a method that is suitable for power users.
Steps:
- Activate Developer Mode: Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version Click on MIUI Version 7 times until the notification βYou are a developerβ appears.
- Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
- Find and turn on: Bluetooth debugging Enable HCI Bluetooth log (if any) Disable A2DP hardware acceleration (can help with sound problems)
Reboot the phone.
Try reconnecting the headphones.
If the headphones are not combined after this:
- π§ Reset network settings: Settings β Connections β Resetting Wi-Fi, Mobile Network and Bluetooth.
- π¦ Remove the Bluetooth app cache: Settings β Annexes β Application management β Systemic β Bluetooth β Warehouse β Clear the cache
π‘
Turning on the developer mode and resetting the Bluetooth cache helps in 70% of cases where the headphones are defined as separate devices but are not synchronized.
Problem Solving: Frequent Errors and Corrections
Even after successful combination, headphones may not work properly, and consider typical scenarios and ways to eliminate them:
Problem 1: Headphones are connected, but only sound is in one.
Causes and solutions:
- π Incorrect volume balance: check balance settings in Settings β Sound. β Stereo balance (should be in the middle).
- π΅ Codec failure: in Bluetooth settings (near the headphone name) select codecs SBC or AAC instead aptX/LDAC.
- π One of the headphones is dead, and even if the light is on, the battery could be unevenly discharged.
Problem 2: Headphones are constantly disconnecting
Possible causes:
- πΆ Interference from other devices: Turn off Bluetooth on your laptop, smartwatch, and other gadgets nearby.
- π± Energy saving: Add headphones to the optimization exception list: Settings β Battery β Optimizing the battery β All applications β Find Bluetooth. β Select "No restrictions"
- π Outdated firmware: update the headphones through Xiaomi Earbuds or Mi Home.
β οΈ Warning: If the headphones disconnect when playing video, turn on the Xiaomi Earbuds Low Latency mode in the app. This will reduce the synchronization of sound with the picture, but can reduce battery life.
Problem 3: Headphones are not defined by the phone
Action:
- Make sure the headphones are in mating mode (flashing white/blue). To do this, hold the touchpad on both headphones for 10 seconds.
- Reboot the phoneβs Bluetooth module: Settings β Connections β Bluetooth β Turn off/On Or through Airplane Mode (turn on for 10 seconds, then turn off).
- If the headphones previously connected to another phone, reset their settings: Place the headphones in the case β Hold the button on the case for 15 seconds β Indicators should flash red
