The Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale 2 is not just a weight measuring device, but a full-fledged fitness tracker that analyzes 13 key body parameters, from body mass index (BMI) to visceral fat. However, many users face difficulties already at the initial setup stage. Without the right connection to the Mi Fit app (or its successor, Mi Health/Zepp Life), the scales turn into a common trinket with a digital display.
In this article, we will look at all the stages of configuration, from unpacking to calibration, synchronization with the phone and fixing typical errors, and pay special attention to hidden functions that the manufacturer does not advertise: For example, how to lose weights to factory settings without a smartphone, or why the data may differ from mechanical scales. XMSH08HM (European version) and XMSH07HM (Chinese), as well as for firmware 2023-2026.
1. Preparation for setting up: what to do before the weights are turned on
Before you turn on the Mi Smart Scale 2, check out three key points:
- π± Smartphone compatibility: scales work with Android 6.0+ or iOS 10.0+. On Android 4.4 or older devices, Mi Fit will not be installed.
- π Battery Charge: 4 Batteries are included AAA. Make sure they are new β discharged items can cause synchronization errors.
- π Mi Account Region: If your Xiaomi account is registered in China, some features (e.g. Google Fit integration) will not be available.
Also, prepare a flat, hard surface, so that the carpet or the soft floor will distort the readings, use tile or laminate optimally, and if the scales are on an uneven surface, the G-sensor sensors may misallocate the load, leading to errors in body composition measurement.
Installation of batteries and first activation
Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the scale panel (hidden under the rubber leg). Insert 4 AAA batteries polarity-marked "+" and "-" on the case. Once the batteries are installed, the scales automatically turn on: the display will show the words "0.0" or "Lo" (if the batteries are discharged).
If the display doesn't catch fire:
- Check the density of the batteries attached β they should be inserted before clicking.
- Turn the scales and lightly knock on the body - sometimes the contacts are oxidized.
- If the message "Err" appears, remove the batteries for 10 seconds and insert back.
π‘
To extend the life of the batteries, remove them if you do not use the scales for more than a month.
3. Download and configure the Mi Fit (Zepp Life) application
The official app for Mi Smart Scale 2 is Mi Fit (for older versions) or Zepp Life (new name after rebranding).
- π€ Google Play (Android)
- π App Store (iOS)
After installation:
- Register a Xiaomi account (or sign in through an existing one).
- In the Profile menu β Devices β Add the device, select Libra.
- Allow the application to access Bluetooth and Notifications (otherwise, the data will not be synced).
Important: If you already have an account on Mi Fit, but you downloaded Zepp Life, the data will not be automatically transferred. To combine it, use the "Data Import" function in your profile settings.

4. Connecting scales to phone via Bluetooth
Now we connect the scales with the smartphone:
- Open the Mi Fit/Zepp Life app and go to the Add Device section.
- Select Libra" β "Mi Smart Scale 2".
- Stand on the scales - your weight will appear on the display, and the device will be searched in the application.
- Confirm the connection in the pop-up window.
If the scales are not:
- π Reboot Bluetooth on your phone (Settings) β Bluetooth β Off./On.).
- π± Make sure the distance between the phone and the scale is 5 meters or less (walls and furniture weaken the signal).
- π Check the batteries β at low charge, Bluetooth can work unstable.

Calibration and first measurements
Once connected, the scales will require calibration, a process that is necessary for the precise operation of the body composition sensors.
- Stand on the scales with bare feet (socks distort impedance readings).
- Stay straight, donβt lean on the wall or furniture.
- Wait for the stabilization of weight (on the display will appear a tick β).
- Get off the scales β the data will automatically be sent to the application.
The critical nuance: if you've just exercised or taken a bath, wait 2-3 hours before measuring. Sweat and wet skin will distort the bioimpedance readings, and the scales will show an inflated percentage of fat.
| Parameter | Normal for men | Norm for women |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of fat | 10β20% | 20β30% |
| Muscle mass | 35β45% | 25β35% |
| visceral fat | 1β10 | 1β9 |
| Water level | 50β65% | 45β60% |
π‘
For accurate measurements, always weigh yourself at the same time (preferably on an empty stomach in the morning) and in the same clothes (or without it).
6. User profile setting
In order for the scales to correctly calculate BMI and other parameters, you need to specify in the application:
- π€ Gender (male/female).
- π Growth (up to 1 cm).
- π Age (important for calculating metabolic age).
- πββοΈ Activity level (sedentary/moderate/active).
How to edit profile:
- In Mi Fit, go to Profile β Personal Data.
- Click on the field you want to change (e.g., βGrowthβ).
- Save the changes β they synchronize with the weights on the next weigh.
β οΈ Note: if you put the wrong height, the scales will overstate or understate the percentage of fat. For example, with a real height of 175 cm and the specified 180 cm, the error in measuring fat will be an error in the measurement of fat. ~2β3%.
7. Common errors and their elimination
Even after you set it up properly, users have problems.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Libra shows "Err" | Overload (max. weight - 150 kg) or unstable surface | Move the scales to a solid surface, stand in the center. |
| Data is not synchronized | Bluetooth is off or the scales are offline | Reboot Bluetooth, reconnect the scales in the app |
| Mechanical weight difference Β± 2 kg | Calibration is not performed or batteries are discharged | Calibrate again, replace the batteries. |
| App doesn't find scales | Libra is already connected to another phone | Reset the scales to factory settings (press the button for 5 seconds) |
If the scale shows βLoβ but youβve just inserted new batteries, check:
- π Has the battery expired (even new ones can be discharged).
- π Are they properly installed (sometimes the contacts are not related to the fee).
- π οΈ Is there no oxidation on the contacts of the compartment (wipe with alcohol).
8. Resetting and reconnecting
If the scales start to glittle (do not turn on, show incorrect data), reset:
- Remove the batteries for 30 seconds.
- Insert them back and immediately press the button on the back for 5-7 seconds.
- The display will show β0.0β β this means that the reset was successful.
After the weight loss will have to connect again:
- π± Remove the device from the list in Mi Fit (Profile) β Devices β Delete).
- π Reboot Bluetooth on your phone.
- π£ Stand on the scales β they should appear in the list of available devices.
β οΈ Warning: Resetting deletes all stored user data, and if you have multiple profiles (e.g., family members), you will have to reconfigure them.
