Xiaomi’s modern wearables have become a benchmark for accessibility and functionality, and the Mi Band 5 model is no exception: This activity tracker has a larger screen, magnetic charging support, and an expanded set of sports modes, making it a popular choice for Android and iOS users. However, for the device to reach its full potential, the correct initial configuration is necessary, which often raises questions for beginners.
The activation process takes only a few minutes, but requires attention to detail, especially when choosing applications and setting up notifications. Errors at the start can lead to the fact that the bracelet will not sync or display data in Russian. In this guide, we will discuss a step-by-step algorithm of actions that will allow you to avoid typical problems and immediately start using all the features of the gadget.
Before you start the software part, make sure your smartphone is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 or higher and the operating system is updated to the current version. For Android, this is usually version 5.0 and higher, for iOS - 10.0 and higher. It is also critical to pre-charge the device, since at low charge the installation process can be interrupted.
Preparation for the first launch and installation of software
The first step is to install a specialized application that serves as a bridge between the bracelet and the smartphone. For a long time, the main application was Mi Fit, but recently Xiaomi has been actively promoting a new application Mi Fitness (formerly Zepp Life). For the Mi Band 5, both options are suitable, but the interface and functionality may differ slightly.
Download the program should be exclusively from official sources: Google Play Market for Android or App Store for iPhone. APK-Files can cause malware to be installed or key synchronization functions to fail. After installing the application, you need to register for a Mi Account if you have not already created one.
⚠️ Note: When registering an account, choose a region carefully. For users from CIS countries, it is most often recommended to choose a region "Russia" or "China", since this depends on the list of available dials and the stability of the servers.
Once you register, log in to your profile and allow the app to access geolocation and notifications. This is a requirement for Bluetooth scanning on modern versions of Android to work properly. Without these permissions, the smartphone simply will not see the bracelet in the list of available devices.
Interconnection of the bracelet with a smartphone
The pairing process is a key point of setup. Unlike conventional Bluetooth headphones, connecting the Mi Band 5 through the phone's standard settings menu is neither necessary nor even recommended, as it can cause data synchronization errors.
The whole procedure is done strictly inside the application. Open the installed application, go to the user profile and find the add button. Usually it is called "Add device" or is depicted as a plus. In the list, select "Brecelet" and wait for the application to find your Mi Band 5.
When the bracelet with its ID appears on your smartphone screen, click "Plug in." The tracker screen will display a vibration signal and confirmation animation. Press the touch button on the bracelet to confirm pairing. Once successfully connected, the device will automatically update the firmware if a new version is available.
☑️ Checklist of successful pairing
If it takes too long to find the device, try rebooting the smartphone and the bracelet itself. To reboot the tracker, plug it into the charger or find the appropriate item in the menu of the bracelet itself, if it is available.
Language and regional settings
One of the most common problems users have is the lack of Russian or the incorrect display of Cyrillic. Mi Band 5 supports Russian out of the box, but to activate it, it is necessary that the interface language of the smartphone is also set in Russian.
In the Mi Fit or Mi Fitness app, go to the device profile and find the "Bracelet settings" or "Profile" section. There should be "Language." If it's "System", the bracelet will copy the language of the phone. If you want to use the English interface on the tracker but Russian in the notifications, select English, but make sure that the notification section has a tick opposite to Russian.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Impact on work |
|---|---|---|
| Language of the system | Russian | Full localization of the menu |
| Hourly format | 24 hours. | Convenience of reading time |
| Units of measurement | metric | Km, kg, calorie instead of miles and pounds |
| Wrist lifting | On (day) | Battery savings and convenience |
It is important to check the settings of the time and measurement format immediately after you connect. Switching from the imperial system (miles, pounds) to the metric system (kilometers, kilograms) occurs in the general settings of the application in the user profile, which affects the display of data in all training reports.
What if instead of Russian letters "Krakozyabry"?
Configuration of notifications and calls
The smart bracelet’s main function is to inform the user without having to pull out the phone. Mi Band 5 allows you to flexibly configure which apps will send push notifications on your wrist. From the device menu in the app, find the “Application Notifications” section.
Here you will see a list of all the programs installed on your smartphone. Activate the switches opposite the ones you want to see messages from (Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber, Instagram, etc.). Remember that the bracelet only broadcasts a notification, it does not allow you to respond to messages or like photos, except for some quick response templates, if supported by the application.
⚠️ Note: For the operation of notifications, the companion application (Mi) Fit/Mi Fitness) must be constantly in the background. On Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung smartphones, aggressive energy savings can “kill” the application process, which will stop notifications coming.
For incoming calls, settings are in a separate section, so you can choose whether the bracelet will vibrate when you call it, and whether you can deflect calls directly from the bracelet (not available on all smartphone models), and you can also set the Do Not Disturb interval so that the gadget does not wake you up with a vibration at night.
Set up health tracking and exercise
The Mi Band 5 features heart rate, sleep, stress and women's health. By default, the pulse sensor can operate in an economical mode, measuring the indicators once every 10 or 30 minutes. For more accurate statistics, especially if you are exercising, it is recommended to set the measurement interval for 1 minute or even 10 seconds in training mode.
In the Sport section, you can adjust the displayed activities. Bracelet supports more than 11 professional modes, including running, swimming, cycling and yoga. When choosing a mode on the bracelet, it will record pulse zones, pace and distance traveled (if the phone's GPS is turned on).
💡
To accurately calculate steps and calories, enter your real anthropometric data (height, weight, age) in your application profile. Without this data, the calculation algorithms will give you a significant margin of error.
The Mi Band 5 can detect REM and deep sleep and daytime sleep, and to keep your statistics correct, try not to remove the bracelet at night and make sure it is tight but comfortable to the wrist.
Personalization of dials and interface
The visual component is what Xiaomi gadgets love. Mi Band 5 supports dynamic change of dials (watch faces). In the application in the section "Dials" you can access a huge library of both free and paid designs.
You can choose from the cloud or upload your own photo. To set your own image, select the appropriate template in the Photo category, click Replace Photos, and select the picture from the smartphone gallery. The image will be cropped to a round or oval screen format.
You can also change the order of the cards you display in the bracelet settings, swipe up or down, and swipe through the feature menu (weather, pulse, steps), and you can drag and drop those cards, removing unnecessary ones (such as Breathing or Stress) to the background to get to the functions you want faster.
💡
Changing the dial is the easiest way to personalize your device, so don't be afraid to experiment with colors and fonts to find a balance between informative and minimalist.
Solving Common Problems When Set Up
Despite the simplicity, there are technical difficulties, the most common is that the bracelet does not charge, the contacts on the back and on the charging cable can become oxidized or contaminated, wipe them with dry soft cloth and make sure the magnets fit tightly.
Another common problem is time desynchronization. If the time on the bracelet is lost, check if the automatic time synchronization in the application is enabled. Also make sure that the smartphone is in the correct time zone. Every time you connect to the phone, the bracelet should automatically adjust the time.
⚠️ Warning: If the bracelet is no longer responsive to touch or freezes, force it to restart. To do this, plug it into the charger. In 99% of cases, this resuscitates the device without losing data.
If the application does not see the bracelet after updating the phone’s operating system, try removing the device from the Bluetooth list in the phone’s settings, then removing the bracelet from the application and conducting the pairing procedure again.
