The 2016 Xiaomi Mi Band 2 fitness bracelet is still popular with users because of its simplicity, reliability and affordable price; despite the age of the device, its features β step counting, sleep monitoring, call alerts and alarm clock β are still in demand today, but many owners face difficulties in setting up the bracelet first: it does not sync with a smartphone, shows the wrong time or does not display notifications.
In this article, we will look at all the stages of setting up the Mi Band 2, from connecting to your phone to fine-tuning alerts, learn how to update your firmware, reset your device to factory settings, and solve typical problems.
Preparation for the setup: what will be needed
Before you start setting up Mi Band 2, make sure you have everything you need:
- π± Smartphone on Android 5.0+ or iOS 10.0+ Bluetooth 4.0 support.
- π Charged bracelet (minimum 20% charge, otherwise synchronization may be interrupted).
- π Stable Internet connection (for downloading applications and updates).
- π² Zepp Life app (formerly Mi Fit) β official bracelet management software.
If youβre using Mi Band 2 with an iPhone, note that some features (like unlocking the screen) may not work as smoothly due to iOS limitations. Also check that the phone is Bluetooth enabled and geodata allowed for the Zepp Life appβwithout this, synchronization will be impossible.
β οΈ Warning: If you bought the bracelet handheld, reset to factory settings before setting up. To do this, press and hold the Mi Band 2 touch button for 10 seconds until the vibration appears. This will remove the binding to the previous owner.
Installation and configuration of the Zepp Life app
The official Mi Band 2 management app is Zepp Life (formerly Mi Fit), which can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and sign up (or sign in via your Xiaomi, Google, Facebook account).
- Click Add Device and select the Bracelet β Mi Smart Band 2.
- Allow the application to access notifications, contacts and geolocation (this is necessary for the correct operation of alerts and pedometer).
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and wait for the app to find the bracelet.
If Zepp Life doesnβt see Mi Band 2, try it out.
- π Reset the bracelet (hold the button for 5 seconds).
- π± Restart Bluetooth on your phone.
- π« Make sure the bracelet is not connected to another device.
After a successful connection, the application will offer to update the firmware of the bracelet. We recommend you to agree - this will fix possible bugs and add new features (for example, support for Cyrillic notifications).
π‘
If after updating the firmware bracelet stopped vibrating, go to Settings β Notifications in the application and enable the option Vibration at alerts.
Setting the time and date
Xiaomi Mi Band 2 automatically syncs time and date with your smartphone when you first connect, but sometimes this data is lost β for example, after discharging the bracelet or changing the time zone.
- Open the Zepp Life app and go to the Profile section β Mi Smart Band 2.
- Select Additional Settings β Time and Date.
- Activate Auto Sync (if it is disabled).
- If the time is still incorrect, click Sync Now.
If the bracelet shows time 1-2 hours late, check your phone's time zone settings. On Android, you can do this in Settings β System β Date and Time. On iPhone, path: Settings β Basic β Date and Time.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The time on the bracelet doesn't change. | Autosynchronization disabled | Enable in Zepp Life β Bracelet settings β Time |
| Date knocks off after charging | Weak battery. | Completely discharge and charge the bracelet |
| Time zone is wrong | Wrong phone settings | Check the time zone in the smartphone settings |
β οΈ Warning: If the bracelet does not update the time after a time zone change (for example, while traveling), restart it and force the data to sync through the application.
Set up notifications: calls, SMS and messengers
One of the key features of the Mi Band 2 is alerting for incoming calls, messages and calendar events, to set up notifications:
- In the Zepp Life app, go to Profile β Mi Smart Band 2 β Notifications.
- Turn on the Call Notification switch.
- Activate options for SMS, Messages and Calendar.
- In the Applications section, select messengers (for example, WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber), notifications from which you want to see on the bracelet.
By default, the Mi Band 2 only shows the app icon and vibrates when the new notification is sent, to see the text of the message on the bracelet screen:
- π Enable the option to Show Content in Notification Settings.
- π€ Make sure to use Android settings (Settings) β Annexes β Zepp Life β Notifications) text allowed.
On the iPhone, notification functionality is limited due to Appleβs policy: the bracelet will vibrate when calling and SMS, but text messages will not be displayed.

Alarm clock and reminders of inaction
Mi Band 2 can wake you up with a vibration, which is useful if you don't want to wake up to the loud sound of an alarm clock.
- In the Zepp Life app, go to Profile β Mi Smart Band 2 β Alarm clock.
- Click Add an alarm and specify the time, days of the week and name (e.g., "Work").
- Activate the option to Repeat if you need an alarm for a few days.
- Save the settings β the bracelet vibrates at the specified time, even if the phone is turned off.
Also in Mi Band 2, there's a no-act reminder feature, which will vibrate if you sit still for a long time, to enable this:
- Go to Profile. β Mi Smart Band 2 β A reminder of inaction.
- Set the interval (e.g., every 60 minutes).
- Choose the days when the reminder should work.
This feature is useful for those who spend a lot of time at the computer or in the office, and the vibration of the bracelet reminds you to get up and stretch, which has a positive effect on health.
What to do if the alarm clock does not work?
Set up a pedometer and sleep monitoring
Mi Band 2 automatically counts steps, distance traveled and calories, but for the accuracy of the data, you need to adjust the parameters correctly:
- In the Zepp Life app, go to Profile β Mi Smart Band 2 β Steps.
- Specify your height, weight and step length (by default 70 cm for men and 60 cm for women).
- Enable the option to Autodetect Activity for a more accurate count.
For sleep monitoring:
- π΄ Put on a bracelet before bedtime (preferably on a non-working hand).
- π In the Zepp Life app, check the sleep phase data (light, deep, awakening).
- β° Set a sleep goal in the Sleep section β Targets.
If the pedometer shows overstated or understated data, calibrate it:
- Take 10-20 steps and manually record the number of steps.
- Compare it to the data in the app.
- If the difference is more than 10%, adjust the step length in the settings.
β οΈ Note: Mi Band 2 does not automatically recognize activities (walking, running, cycling). For accurate training, use manual input in the app or connect the bracelet to third-party services, such as Google Fit or Apple Health.
Additional features and hidden capabilities
Besides the basic features, the Mi Band 2 has a few hidden features that many donβt know about:
- π Phone unlock: On Android, the bracelet can unlock the screen without entering a password. To do this, go to Settings in Zepp Life β Unlock your phone and follow the instructions. The feature only works on Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI or devices with Android 5.0-9.0.
- π Saving Charge: Disable unnecessary notifications and reduce data synchronization frequency (c Settings) β Autosynchronization. This will extend the bracelet to 20 to 25 days.
- π΅ Music management: On Android, you can switch tracks directly from the bracelet. β Managing music.
The Mi Band 2 also supports changing the dial (although the choice is limited to 3-4 options) to change the dial:
- Open Zepp Life and go to Profile β Mi Smart Band 2 β Dials.
- Choose the option you like and click Apply.
If you want more dial options, you can use third-party apps like Notify & Fitness for Mi Band or Mi Band Master. However, beware: unofficial firmware can disrupt the bracelet.
π‘
For maximum autonomy, turn off constant data synchronization and leave only manual updates, which will increase the life of the bracelet to 3-4 weeks.
Resetting settings and problem solving
If the Mi Band 2 is starting to glitches β it's not synced, it doesn't show notifications, or it's permanently shutting down, try resetting it to factory settings.
- Open the Zepp Life app.
- Go to Profile. β Mi Smart Band 2 β Untie the device.
- Confirm the decoupling and wait for the process to be completed.
- On the bracelet, press and hold the touch button for 10-15 seconds until you feel the vibration.
- Reconnect the bracelet as you did when you first set it up.
If there are problems after reset, check:
- π Bracelet charge (with a low charge, failures are possible).
- π± Phone compatibility (very old or custom firmware may have bugs).
- π The firmware version of the bracelet (update it via Zepp Life).
A common problem is that the bracelet doesn't vibrate when notified.
- π Check the vibration settings in Zepp Life β Notifications.
- π΅ Make sure the phone is not in "Do Not Disturb" mode".
- π Reconnect the bracelet to the phone.
β οΈ Warning: If the bracelet stops turning on after the firmware update, plug it into charging for 30 to 60 minutes, often to help restore work. If the problem persists, contact the service center - there may have been a controller failure.
