The compatibility of wearable electronics and smartphones from various manufacturers often raises questions among users, especially when it comes to the pairing of Huawei and Xiaomi. Many owners of budget and flagship models of Xiaomi successfully use activity trackers from Huawei, gaining full access to the functionality of the gadget without losing important functions. However, the process of initial configuration can seem confusing due to the peculiarities of the operating system MIUI or HyperOS.
Unlike standard Bluetooth pairing, smartwatches require special software to synchronize health data. The Android interface on Xiaomi phones has aggressive power saving settings that can block the application’s background services, which is why the standard “found and plugged” procedure won’t work here without prior preparation.
In this guide, we will take a look at everything from choosing the right app to fine-tuning permissions to keep your watch running smoothly. Careful execution of each step will avoid common mistakes such as disconnection or lack of notifications.
Preparation of equipment and selection of applications
The first step is to determine the model of your watch, as it depends on the choice of software. Older models such as the first generation Huawei Watch GT or the Honor Band series trackers (up to version 4) may require the installation of the Huawei Wear app. However, for most modern devices, including the GT 2 series, GT 3, GT 4 and Watch 3, you need to use the Huawei Health app.
The problem is that Xiaomi phones often don’t have the current version of Huawei Health on Google Play Store or are not officially supported, which is due to Google’s policy toward Huawei services, and users have to look for alternative installation methods to access the full functionality.
Where to download the application safely?
There are several ways to get the software you need on board your smartphone: You can use the built-in browser to download the installation file or use third-party app stores such as Petal Search. It is important to make sure that the Android version on your Xiaomi is at least 6.0, although Android 10 and higher is recommended for the proper operation of modern watches.
Installation of Huawei Health on Xiaomi
The process of installing the app on Xiaomi devices has its own peculiarities due to the lack of Google services from the watch manufacturer. You will need to download the APK installation package. To do this, open the browser on your phone and go to the official Huawei website or use the Petal Search, which is often preinstalled or available for download.
After downloading the file, MIUI can issue a security alert because installation from unknown sources is limited by default. This is the standard Android security response. You will need to allow installation by clicking the appropriate button in the window that appears and confirming the action in the browser security settings.
Installation can take a few seconds. After you're done, don't rush to open the app. First, make sure you have a Huawei ID account. If you don't have one, you'll need to sign up on your first run. Without the account, synchronization and firmware updates will not be possible.
💡
When registering for Huawei ID, use your real date of birth and current phone number, as it can be difficult to restore access to your account without a binding.
The pairing of the watch and the phone
Now, to the most important step, which is connecting devices, turn on the watch if it's off and bring it close to your smartphone. Open the Huawei Health app and log in to your account. Go to the Devices tab and click the Add Device button or the plus icon in the corner of the screen.
The app will run scans of your devices. Your watch should appear on the list of available gadgets. Click on it to start pairing. The watch screen and phone display will show a confirmation code. Make sure the codes match, and confirm the connection on both devices.
As you set up, the app will ask for a number of permissions. To work properly, you need to agree to all of the points, including access to geolocation, contacts, calls and notifications. Without geolocation permission, some features, such as jogging route tracking, may not work properly.
☑️ Checklist of successful pairing
Once the pairing is successful, it will start synchronizing data. It can take a few minutes. If you request a watch software update in the process, be sure to follow it. Newer versions of the firmware often contain patches for compatibility errors with various smartphones, including Xiaomi.
Configure MIUI Notifications and Permissions
The most common problem for Huawei and Xiaomi owners is that they don't have notifications on their watches or they're constantly breaking their connections. The MIUI and HyperOS operating system are known for aggressive battery optimization, which kills application background processes by thinking they're superfluous. For the watch to work consistently, you have to manually configure exceptions.
Go to your phone's settings and find the Apps section. Go to Huawei Health. Go to AutoStart and turn it on, which will allow the app to start right after you turn on the phone, which is critical to getting notifications.
Next, in the same menu, look for "Energy Saving" or "Activity Control." Select "No Restrictions" mode. This will prevent the system from forcibly closing the application. Also check permissions: make sure the application is allowed to display notifications on top of other windows and operate in the background.
⚠️ WARNING: If you clean your phone's memory through a standard Xiaomi cleaner ("Accelerate"), the Huawei Health app may be shut down. add it to the cleaner's exclusion list to avoid breaking the clock's connection.
To set the notifications themselves, open the Huawei Health app, go to the device section, select your watch, and find Notifications, where you can choose which apps will duplicate messages on your wrist, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or calls.
| Setup parameter | Recommended value | Where to find out. |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-start | Included. | Settings → Applications → Huawei Health |
| Energy conservation | No restrictions. | Battery → Settings → Applications |
| Locking in memory | Locked. | Menu of running applications → Castle |
| Access to geolocation | Always allowed. | Appendix authorizations |
Solving Bluetooth and Stability Problems
Even after you set it up properly, you can have situations where the clock doesn't respond or the data doesn't sync, often because of Bluetooth cache or protocol version conflict, and the first thing you do is try to reboot both devices, which solves 80 percent of the time failures.
If the problem persists, try removing the device from the app and from the phone's Bluetooth settings, and then pairing again. Sometimes resetting the network settings on the phone helps, but this will require re-entering the Wi-Fi passwords.
Note the Bluetooth version. Although the protocol is backward compatible, Bluetooth 5.0 and higher are better for transferring large amounts of data (such as music tracks to watches) and fast synchronization. Make sure that the developer settings on Xiaomi do not include experimental versions of Bluetooth that can cause instability.
What to do if your watch can’t see your phone?
It’s also worth checking if you have a third-party antivirus or memory cleaner that can block system services, and if you have a Huawei Health process, you should add it to the white sheet.
Functionality and synchronization
Once you've successfully set up, you'll have a wide range of options, and the watch will automatically track your sleep, your heart rate, your blood oxygen levels and your stress, and all of that data will be displayed as convenient graphs in the Huawei Health app.
The special feature is sleep monitoring, which is famous for its accuracy in determining sleep phases, and for this function to work properly, it is important not to remove the gadget at night and (make sure) that it fits tightly to the wrist, and the data will be synchronized when you open the application.
For sports enthusiasts, GPS mode is available. The watch can use the built-in GPS module (if it is in the model) or connect to the GPS of the smartphone. In the training settings, select the type of activity, and the track will be built with high accuracy. After training, the statistics will automatically download to the application.
💡
Regular synchronization (opening the application at least once a day) is necessary to accumulate statistics and correctly work long-term analytical reports on health.
Remember to update the dials. There are thousands of screen design options available in the theme store. Some of them can show more data, others can be more minimalistic, and downloading new dials also requires a stable Internet connection.
