Why Xiaomi left earphone stopped working: the main reasons
A problem with one of Xiaomiβs headphones (whether itβs Redmi AirDots, Mi True Wireless or Buds 4) is one of the most common wireless malfunctions. Service centers say 65 percent of the time itβs not a hardware defect, but a software malfunction or user error. But how do you tell a βtreatableβ problem from a fatal one?
The first thing to understand is that the left earbud is more likely to fail than the right earbud. TWS-In the case of headphones, where the right is usually the master and the left is the slave, and if the connection between the two is broken, it is the left that can freeze or stop turning on:
- π Battery discharge (especially if the headphones have been left unused for more than a month)
- π± Failure to sync between headphones or with a smartphone
- π§ Moisture intake (even if the model has protection) IPX4/IP54)
- π Pollution of contacts in the case or on the headphones themselves
- π οΈ Hardware breakdown (dynamics, microphone, control board)
Before you bring your headphones to the service, go through our checklist, and 80% of the time, the problem is solved in 10-15 minutes at home.
Step 1: Check the charge and contact case
Start with the obvious, the charge level, and even if the indicator on the case is green, it doesn't guarantee that both earbuds are charged, and the left-handed capsule may not be in contact with the pins in the case because of:
- 𧴠Oxidation of contacts (a green coating appears)
- ποΈ Dust or pile in the connectors
- π Wear of spring contacts (often after 1-1.5 years of use)
How to check:
- Take both earphones out of the case and look at the charge indicators, and if the left one doesn't flash white/red, it's discharged or not in contact.
- Take a magnifying glass and examine the contacts on the earpiece and in the case socket. When oxidized, gently clean them with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol.
- Try placing the left earpiece in the right case slot (and vice versa). If it starts charging, the problem is in the socket contacts.
If after cleaning the headphone still does not charge, try to reset the case: put it on charging for 30 minutes, then remove the headphones and hold the button on the case for 15 seconds (until the indicator blinks).

Step 2: Resetting headphones to factory settings
If the left earphone is switching on but not connecting to the phone or the second earpiece, it is likely that sync failure has occurred, a typical problem for the Redmi AirDots 2 and Mi True Wireless 2 models after the firmware update.
Resetting instructions:
- Put both headphones in the case and close the lid.
- Open the lid and hold the button on the case for 20-30 seconds (until the white and red indicators blink alternately).
- Get your headphones out β they should automatically turn on in pairing mode (blinking white light).
- Remove the headphones from the list of Bluetooth devices on your phone and connect again.
For models Xiaomi Buds 3/4 with touch control reset is performed differently:
1. Touch and hold the touchpad on both headphones for 10 seconds.
2. wait for the double beep and the flashing of the red indicator.
3. Reconnect via Bluetooth.Importantly, after reset, the headphones may lose the gesture settings and equalizer, and they will have to be reconfigured in the Mi Home or Xiaomi Earbuds app.
π‘
If the reset didnβt work, try connecting the headphones to another device (tablet, laptop) to help eliminate the problem with the smartphone.
Step 3: Checking software settings and firmware
Sometimes the left-hand Xiaomi headphone doesn't work because of firmware conflict or incorrect audio settings.Redmi AirDots 3 Pro, for example, has a separate headphone balance setting that can be accidentally knocked down.
What to check:
- π² Sound balance in Bluetooth settings on your phone (on Android: Settings) β Connected devices β Headphones β Sound settings).
- π Update firmware through the official application Xiaomi Earbuds (available for models from 2020).
- π§ Mode "Mono" (if on, the sound goes only to one headphone).
To update the firmware:
- Put the headphones on the phone.
- Open the Xiaomi Earbuds app (download to Google Play or App Store).
- Go to Settings β Update firmware.
- If a new version is available, install it (earphones should be in a case with an open lid).
If the app doesn't see headphones, try:
- Reboot the smartphone.
- Turn off the VPN or firewall.
- Connect to another Wi-Fi network (sometimes the update is blocked by corporate networks).
What to do if the firmware is βhangedβ?
Step 4: Diagnostics of hardware breakdowns
If none of the previous methods worked, the problem is likely hardware, and consider the typical "iron" faults and their signs:
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Can I fix it myself? |
|---|---|---|
| The earphone is on, but there's no sound. | The speaker or audio chip is damaged. | β Rationing is required. |
| The indicator does not burn, the earphone does not respond to the buttons | Failure of the battery or power controller | β οΈ You can replace the battery (you need a soldering iron) |
| The earphone is turned on, but immediately switched off. | Short circuit on board | β Only the service center. |
| The sound is there, but very quiet or wheezing. | Pollution dynamics or rupture of the membrane | β You can clean with alcohol. |
For self-diagnosis:
- Put a flashlight in the speaker's grille, and if you see dust or pile, carefully remove it with a soft brush or toothpick.
- Shake the earphone. If you hear a noise (as if something is dangling inside) it's a sign of a piece of board that has fallen off.
- Smell the earpiece. The smell of the burnt-out is a burnt-out component.
If you're confident in your skills, you can try to disassemble the earpiece.
- Take a plastic spatula (or mediator) and gently tuck the lid, starting at the bottom edge.
- Disconnect the battery plume (usually glued).
- Check the integrity of the tracks on the board under the magnifier.
β οΈ Attention: Disassembly of headphones Xiaomi deprives of warranty. In 90% of cases, after self-repair speaker or board, the earphone begins to work worse (wheezing appears, the sound balance disappears).
Step 5: Bluetooth and compatibility issues
Sometimes the left earbud doesnβt turn on because of Bluetooth protocol incompatibility or conflict with other devices, for example, if your smartphone only supports Bluetooth 4.2 and the headphones require 5.0, there may be crashes.
How to check compatibility:
- On Android: go to Settings β About Phone β Bluetooth version.
- On iPhone: Settings β Main β About This Device β Model Number (see model specifications online).
If Bluetooth versions are compatible, the problem remains:
- π΅ Turn off Bluetooth on all devices nearby (smartwatches, speakers, laptops).
- π Restart your router (sometimes Wi-Fi interferes with Bluetooth at 2.4 GHz).
- π± Reset network settings on your phone (Settings) β System system β Reset β Reset Wi-Fi, mobile network and Bluetooth).
For owners. Xiaomi/Redmi Smartphones have another life hack:
1. Enable Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone and 7 times click on "Version MIUI".
2. Return to Settings β Additional β For developers.
3. Find the Bluetooth Debug option and turn it on.
4. Reboot the phone and reconnect the headphones.Step 6: When to contact the service center
If all of these methods do not help, there are two options:
- Warranty repair (if the headphones were purchased less than 12 months ago)
- Paid repairs or purchase of new headphones.
When to bring to the service:
- π₯ The headphone smells like a burn or warms up when charging.
- π¦ It was liquid (even if the headphone worked for a while).
- π The sound is completely gone, but the indicator is on and the headphone is connected.
- π The headphone discharges in 5-10 minutes (a sign of a βdeadβ battery).
The cost of repairs in official Xiaomi services (for 2026):
| Type of repair | Cost (β½) | Date(days) |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement of the speaker | 1 200β1 800 | 3β5 |
| Battery replacement | 800β1 500 | 2β3 |
| Repair of the fee (solding) | 1 500β3 000 | 5β7 |
| Cleaning for oxidation | 500β1 000 | 1β2 |
Before the service visit:
- Check the warranty card (if the headphones were purchased officially).
- Take a picture of the serial number (usually on the case cover).
- Check by phone if there are spare parts for your model.
β οΈ Attention: Unofficial services often offer βcheapβ repairs using non-original parts, which can lead to a deterioration of sound or a rapid failure of the headphones. Focus on reviews and check whether the workshop has a license to repair Xiaomi equipment.

If the headphones are warranty, don't disassemble them yourself! Opening the case will automatically void the warranty.
