What is Mi Account and why all Xiaomi Redmi smartphones require it
You just unpacked the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, turned it on — and the first thing the phone asks you to create or log in to Mi Account. Many users miss this step, considering it an unnecessary formality. But in fact, without this account, you lose access to 37% of the built-in features of the smartphone, including cloud backup, data synchronization and even the ability to unlock the custom firmware bootloader.
Mi Account is a single account of the Xiaomi ecosystem, which connects not only smartphones, but also smartwatches, TVs, routers and household appliances of the brand. On Redmi phones (which, recall, are a sub-brand of Xiaomi), this account is integrated at the level of MIUI firmware. Without it, some services will simply not work, and some settings will be blocked. But is it necessary in practice? Let's figure out what specific tasks Mi Account solves and can be done without it.
Skeptics often compare Mi Accounts to Google or Apple ID accounts, claiming that it is just a way of collecting data. However, Xiaomi has unique features that competitors do not have, such as cross-platform synchronization between Android smartphones and devices on HarmonyOS (if you have Huawei equipment); or the ability to remotely control the phone via a web interface if it is lost.
1. Cloud Backup: Why Without Mi Account You'll Lose Data When Reset
Imagine a situation where your Redmi 11 Prime started to slow down, and you decided to reset to factory settings. Without the Mi Account, all your contacts, SMS, notes, and even lock screen settings would be permanently deleted, whereas with a linked account, just logging in after the reset would be enough to automatically restore all your data.

Many users fear that Mi Account is a way for Xiaomi to collect personal data, but in terms of security, this account is not inferior to Google or Apple ID, and in some ways even surpasses them:
