Xiaomi’s remote control is not just an accessory, but the key to fully managing the brand’s smart TVs. However, even with the original Mi Remote, Redmi TV Remote or universal models, users face connectivity problems: the TV does not respond to commands, the indicator on the remote does not burn, or synchronization breaks down after updating the firmware. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of connecting, from standard synchronization to manual code entry and resetting.
Xiaomi remotes are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or infrared (IR) based on the TV model. For example, Mi TV 4S and Redmi Smart TV X support both types of connection, whereas budget series like Mi TV A can only use IR. If you bought the remote separately or lost the original one, it is important to make sure that you are compatible, which we will also talk about.
Before you start setting up, check three key points: 1) Replace the batteries in the remote (even if they are new – sometimes contacts oxidize). 2 Make sure the TV is on and on standby (the indicator on the front should flash or burn). 3 Disable other Bluetooth devices near the TV (earphones, smartphones) to avoid interference.
1. Standard connection of the original Xiaomi remote (Bluetooth)
The original Mi Remote (MDZ-26-AA, MDZ-34-DA, etc.) is automatically connected to the TV when it is first turned on. If synchronization is not achieved, do the binding:
- Turn on the TV with the power button on the case (not on the remote!).
- Press and hold the Back + Home buttons on the remote at the same time for 5-7 seconds until the indicator flashes quickly.
- Hold the remote 10 to 20 cm to the TV, and it takes up to 30 seconds to sync.
- After successful connection, the indicator on the remote will stop flashing and light up with even light.

2. Connecting universal IR-remote TV
Universal remotes (such as Xiaomi Mi Universal Remote or third-party models) operate over an infrared channel (IR) and require manual code entry.
- Turn on the TV with a button on the body.
- On the universal remote, press and hold the TV (or Set) button until the indicator blinks twice.
- Enter a 4- or 5-digit code for your Xiaomi TV model (see table below).The indicator should blink once after you type it correctly.
- Check the Power, Volume+, Channel+ buttons. If the remote doesn't respond, repeat the process with a different code.

If none of the code fits, try automatic search: Hold Set → Press 991 → Point the remote to TV and wait for a reaction.
The process can take up to 5 minutes – the TV must turn off after finding the correct code.
What to do if the remote "forgot" the code?
3.Sync the remote via the Mi Home app
If the physical connection fails, use the official Mi Home app (available for Android and iOS), which is suitable for Bluetooth remotes and requires that the TV be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the smartphone.
Instructions:
- Install the Mi Home app and log in to your Xiaomi account.
- Add the TV to the app: Devices → Add → TV.
- Select your TV model from the list and follow the instructions on the screen.
- After connecting the TV, go to Device Settings → Remote → Connect a new remote.

If the TV is not displayed in Mi Home, check:

Xiaomi TVs with MIUI TV 3.0 and later have a built-in remote search feature.
- Open the settings → Devices → remotes DU.
- Select Add remote.
- Click Start Search and follow the instructions on the screen.
- When the TV detects the remote, confirm the connection.
If the Remote option is not on the menu, your TV model does not support this feature, then use alternative methods:

5. Problem Solving: The remote does not connect
If none of these methods worked, check the following points:

Critical error: On Xiaomi TVs with MT9638 chipset (such as Mi TV P1 55) after upgrading to MIUI TV 4.0.25, Bluetooth remote support may disappear. The solution is a rollback to version 4.0.22 through Settings → About TV → Local Update.

6. Alternative ways to control the TV
If you can’t connect the remote, use alternative methods:

7. How to reset the Xiaomi remote settings
If the remote has previously been synced to another TV or is not working properly, perform a full reset:
- Remove the batteries from the remote.
- Press and hold any button (such as Home) for 20 seconds.
- Put the batteries back in.
- Reconnect the remote according to the instructions from the first section.
To reset Bluetooth connection settings on your TV: Settings → Devices → Bluetooth → Forget the device (Mi Remote Controller).
