You try to add a new number to Xiaomi’s phone book, but the system stubbornly gives out an error or just ignores the action? The problem is found on devices from Redmi to POCO and Mi, regardless of the version of MIUI — whether it is MIUI 14 on Xiaomi 13 or MIUI 12.5 on Redmi Note 10. In 80% of cases, it is not hardware malfunctions, but software conflicts or incorrect settings.
In this article, we’ll look at all the possible reasons why your phone doesn’t retain contacts on Xiaomi, from the banal lack of rights in the Contacts app to hidden malfunctions in your Google account or damage to system files. For each reason, we’ll give you a step-by-step solution, including screenshots of menus and commands for power users. If you’ve tried rebooting your phone, this is just the beginning: it’s going to be more interesting.
1. No rights of access to contacts
The most common reason Xiaomi doesn’t keep contacts is because the Contacts or Phone app doesn’t have permissions, and the manufacturer actively blocks the background activity of the programs in order to save battery, which sometimes leads to crashes.
To check the rights:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the Contacts app (or Phone depending on the model).
- Go to Permits and make sure it is included: 📱 Contacts (reading and modifying) 💾 Storage (if you save it to a file) VCF) 📶 Telephone (for automatic numbering)
If permissions are already on, but the problem remains, reset them and reissue them. To do this, click Reset permissions on the same menu and confirm the action.
💡
On some models (e.g. POCO X3 Pro), permissions for contacts may be hidden in the Settings menu → Privacy → Application permissions.
2 Contacts are saved to the wrong account
Xiaomi defaults to save contacts to your Mi Account, Google or local memory. If the wrong source is selected, new numbers can “disappear” or duplicate. For example, when synchronizing with Google Contacts, changes are sometimes applied with a delay of up to 10 minutes.
How to check and change the location of the save:
- Open the Contacts app.
- Click + (add contact) and look at the Save in field.
- If you have a Mi Account but you are not using it, choose Device or Google.
How to fix it:
- Open Settings → Accounts and Synchronization.
- Choose your Google account (or Mi Account).
- Turn off the synchronization of Contacts, wait 30 seconds and turn it on again.
- Press Sync now.
If the synchronization is suspended during the “Waiting” stage:
- Check your internet connection (synchronization only works via Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- Delete your account and add it again (export your contacts to the.vcf file).
- Update the Google Contacts app in the Play Store.
What to do if the synchronization is suspended at 0%?
4. Damage to the cache or data of the Contacts application
Over time, cache and app data Contacts may become corrupted, leading to save errors.
- 📵 Contact is maintained but disappears after restart
- 🔄 App 'flying out' when trying to edit
- ⚠️ Notification “Savement error” appears»
The solution is to clean the cache and data:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management → Contacts.
- Click Clear the cache and confirm.
- If it doesn’t help, click Clear the data (⚠️ This will remove all unsynchronized contacts!).
☑️ Preparation for data cleanup of the “Contact” annex"
⚠️ Warning: If your contacts are gone after cleaning up, don't panic. They're saved to the cloud (if you've been synced). Just go to Settings. → Accounts. → Google → Synchronize and update data.
Conflict with duplicate applications
Xiaomi often preinstalled several applications for working with contacts:
- Contacts (standard from Xiaomi)
These programs can block each other, especially if both are trying to sync data to the cloud.
How to identify the culprit:
- Open Settings → Applications and find all programs related to contacts.
- Disable (or remove) third-party apps like Truecaller, Drupe.
- For Google Contacts, turn off autosynchronization in your account settings.
If the problem disappeared, it was one of the deleted apps that was to blame, to bring it back:
- Install the program again from the Play Store.
- In its settings, turn off automatic contact management.
6. File system errors or memory damage
If contacts are not stored only in local memory (when choosing the source Device), but work normally with Google or Mi Account – the problem is damage to the data partition (/data) or malfunction of flash memory.
Signs of hardware failure:
- 📱 The phone periodically freezes when working with contacts
- 💾 Other applications also cannot save files (e.g. Gallery or Records)
- ⚠️ In Settings → Memory displays the message "damaged section»
Solutions to complexity:
- Memory check for errors: Install the A1 SD Bench app from the Play Store and run a write/read test. If the speed is below 10 MB/s, this is a sign of memory wear.
Reset the settings to factory:
Settings → About the phone → Reset settings → Erase all data⚠️ Warning: Before resetting, export your contacts to a.vcf file and copy it to your computer or cloud. MIUI — It may contain corrupted files.

- 📵 Contacts disappear after reboot
- 🔄 Unknown numbers appear in the phone book
- 📱 The phone is warming and discharged quickly
How to check and clean:
- Install an antivirus (Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light) and scan the system.
- Check the list of installed apps in Settings → Apps. Uninstall suspicious ones (especially with names like Contact Manager, Phone Optimizer).
- Disable Administrator Rights for Unknown Programs: Settings → Passwords and Security → App Permissions → Device Administrators
⚠️ Note: If the antivirus detects a threat in the system file (for example, /system/priv-app/Contacts/Contacts.apk) — It's a sign of a firmware breach, and the solution is one thing: a complete flashing of the phone, and all the data is deleted.
