Why Xiaomi Redmi Refuses to Save Changes to Contact Name
You edit the contact name in the Xiaomi Redmi phone book, click Save, but it all goes back to the original version after a second? Or do the changes apply, but after the device is reset, the name is reset again? This problem is familiar to many smartphone owners on MIUI, the Xiaomi brand shell, and the reasons can be hidden in both firmware bugs and conflicts of synchronization with cloud services.
In this article, we will discuss 7 key reasons why Redmi Note 10/11/12, Redmi 9/10/13C and other models can ignore changes in contacts, as well as give step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting.
Important: If you use Redmi with custom firmware (like Pixel Experience or LineageOS), some of the solutions may not work because of a modified system, in which case, check the firmware compatibility with Google services.
1. Sync conflict with Google Account
The most common reason for a contact name to roll back is automatic synchronization with Google, where when you edit a contact locally and then the device syncs to the cloud, the Google server can overwrite your changes with old data, and this happens because:
- ๐ Different versions of the contact in the local and cloud ledger (for example, you were correcting the name on your phone, but the old version remained in Google Contacts).
- โณ Synchronization delays: Changes are not applied instantly, and when synchronized again, data is rolled backยป.
- ๐ฑ Dual Contact Source: The same contact is duplicated in Google Contacts and Mi Account.
To check if Google is to blame, open Settings โ Accounts โ Google โ Account Sync and temporarily disable Contact Sync. Then try changing the name โ if the problem has disappeared, then the conflict is confirmed.
๐ก
Before you turn off sync, export your contacts to the VCF file via Contacts โ Settings โ Import / Export. This will protect your data from loss.
2. synchronization errors with Mi Account
Mi Account is a Xiaomi branded account that can sync contacts, too. If you have sync with both Google and Mi Account enabled, there is a conflict of priorities: the system does not know which version of the contact is considered current, especially after:
- ๐ Updates MIUI (for example, MIUI 12 on MIUI 13/14).
- ๐ฑ Resetting settings to factory.
- ๐ง Manual import/export contacts.
To fix the problem:
- Open the Settings. โ Accounts. โ Mi Account.
- Turn off contact sync.
- Remove duplicate contacts (if any) through Contacts โ Management โ Combine and Fix.
- Turn on the sync back and check for changes.
What if Mi Account is not displayed in the settings?
3. Damage to the cache or data of the Contacts application
Cache and data from com.android.contacts (the standard MIUI Contacts app) can be corrupted due to:
- ๐ฑ Incorrect system updates.
- ๐ Interrupted synchronization.
- ๐ฒ Installation of third-party launchers (for example, Nova Launcher or POCO Launcher).
Cleaning up cache and data often solves the problem:
Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management
Find the Contacts (or Contacts) app
Click Warehouse โ Clear the cache
Click Clear Data (WARNING: This will remove all unsynchronized contacts!)
Reboot the phone.-->
Important: Once the data is cleared, all local contacts (not synced to Google or Mi Account) will be deleted. If you have unsaved numbers, pre-export them to the VCF file.
4.Firmware bugs MIUI: known problems and workarounds
Some versions of MIUI have confirmed contact editing bugs, such as:
| MIUI version | Redmi models | Problem. | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12.5 | Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi 9T | Contact names are reset after editing | Upgrade to MIUI 13+ or roll back to MIUI 12 |
| MIUI 13.0.4 | Redmi Note 11, Redmi 10 | Contacts are duplicated when synchronized with Google | Disable Mi Account Synchronization |
| MIUI 14.0.2 | Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 | Changes in contact groups are not maintained | Use the web version of Google Contacts |
If your model and MIUI version are in the table, try the solution. If not, check the firmware relevance:
- Go to Settings โ About the phone โ System update.
- Click on โCheck Updatesโ and install the latest version of MIUI.
- After the update, reset the settings of the Contacts app (see Section 3).

- ๐ฑ Limitation of symbols: SIM-cards support only Latin and numerals (Cyrillic may not be saved).
- ๐ข Limit on number of contacts: usually no more than 250 entries.

Contacts to SIM-It's an outdated storage format, it doesn't support photos, multiple numbers or addresses, and it often causes editing errors. Move them to the cloud or to the phone's memory.
6. Problems with access rights or third-party applications
Sometimes changes in contacts are blocked due to:
- ๐ No rights to the Contacts app (for example, after resetting settings).
- ๐ก๏ธ Antiviruses or optimizers (e.g. Clean Master, 360 Security) that block access to the database.
- ๐ฑ Power saving mode that limits application background activity.
Check the access rights:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Contacts โ Rights.
- Make sure that the rights to Contacts, Warehouse and Phone are included.
- Turn off battery optimization for the Contacts app in Settings โ Battery โ Battery Optimization.
If you use third-party contact management apps (like Truecaller or Drupe), try:
- Update the application to the latest version.
- Clear his cache in the settings.
- Temporarily remove it and check if changes to the standard appendix persist.
๐ก
If the problem occurs after installing a custom launcher (such as Hyperion Launcher), return the standard MIUI launcher.
7. Hardware malfunctions or memory damage
In rare cases, the problem may be related to physical malfunctions:
- ๐พ Damage to the memory partition where contacts are stored (for example, after a phone crash).
- ๐ Wear of flash memory (relevant to older Redmi models) 4/5).
- ๐ฑ Memory controller malfunction (manifested by other glitches, for example, spontaneous reboots).
To check the hardware:
- Create a backup of the data and perform a full reset (Settings โ Additional โ Resetting).
- If the problem persists after the reset, test the phone using the Mi Diagnostics app (available in Settings โ About Phone โ Diagnostics).
- Contact the service center if the tests show memory errors (eMMC/UF).
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the phone is warranty, don't try to disassemble it yourself or reflash it.This will void Xiaomi's warranty obligations.
