When a Xiaomi smartphone responds to an incoming call or resets it without the owner’s input, it can be a serious problem, not only disrupting communication, but also creating a sense of loss of control over the device. Most often, users are faced with the phone reacting to an ear, voice or movement, perceiving it as a command to action. In MIUI and the new HyperOS, a whole range of sensors and software algorithms are responsible for these functions, which by default can be set too aggressively.
Understanding the causes of this behavior is essential as quickly as possible, as it can lead to missing important conversations or, conversely, to accidentally connecting with the interlocutor at the wrong time. The main culprits are the functions of "Voice Answer", "Pickback Response" or activated "Pocket" mode. Understanding what exactly is causing the failure will allow you to point-to-point configure the device and regain full control over the calls. Below we will discuss all possible scenarios and ways to eliminate them.
In some cases, the problem is not the software settings, but the physical condition of the gadget. The security glass, the wrong case, or the contamination of the proximity sensor can give false signals to the system. Before you go into deep settings, you should make sure that the top of the screen is clean and the accessory does not block the sensors. If the physics is all right, then it's time to adjust the software logic of the calls.
Voice control and auto-response function
One of the most common reasons Xiaomi's smartphone is taking calls is because it has an activated voice control feature, which can take any extraneous sounds, or even your own breath, as a "Apply" command, which is useful for people with disabilities, but in everyday use it often creates discomfort. To check and disable this feature, you need to go to the call settings.
Find the voice control item on the menu and make sure the switch is in the off position, which is often forgotten by users after initially setting up the phone or updating the firmware, and voice response can be activated even from background traffic noise or conversations.
⚠️ Warning: After disabling voice control, check the microphone in other applications to make sure you haven’t turned off microphone access for the entire system.
If you use a Bluetooth headset, the settings may be duplicated. Check if autoresponse is enabled in the settings of the connected device or in the headphone control app. Sometimes Mi True Wireless or other accessories have their own algorithms for answering calls with double touch, which can trigger spontaneously.
- 📱 Open the Phone app and click on three dots in the corner.
- ⚙️ Go to Settings and find the Voice Control section».
- 🔇 Turn off the option “Voice response” and “Voice dialing».
- 🎧 Check the settings of connected Bluetooth headsets separately.
In the pocket mode and proximity sensor
Pocket Mode is designed to lock the screen and prevent accidental taps when the phone is in the bag. However, if the proximity sensor is contaminated or malfunctioning, the system may think the phone is still in its pocket, and either lock the screen while talking or, conversely, react strangely to incoming ones. In rare cases, this leads to an automatic reset or take a call when retrieving.
To remedy this, we recommend calibrating the proximity sensor, which is standard for Redmi and Poco devices, and often resolves screen issues during a conversation, and it’s worth checking if there’s a wide black-framed protective glass that covers the sensor at the top of the case.
⚠️ Note: When calibrating the sensor, do not cover the top of the screen with your hands, otherwise the calibration will be error-prone and the problem will worsen.
If the software calibration doesn't work, maybe the sensor is physically damaged or the train has gone away, and then the In-pocket mode is better off completely in the settings to eliminate its impact on the call operation, which is a temporary solution, but it will take back control of the situation before visiting the service.

Do Not Disturb Mode Settings and Schedules
Users often confuse automatic response with automatic reset or blocking notifications. If your Xiaomi does not pick up the phone itself, but simply keeps silent or drops the call, check Do Not Disturb mode. In this mode, the phone can automatically reject calls from all but selected contacts, or not emit audible signals.
Check your active schedules. You may have an automatic sleep or work mode set up that includes Do Not Disturb at certain times, in which case the behavior of the phone is completely normal, but may be perceived as an error. Go to the sound and vibration settings to make sure that no timers are active right now.
Pay special attention to recalling settings. In some MIUI configurations, if the same number rings a second time within 3 minutes, the call can be filtered or passed through locking, depending on the filtering strategy chosen.
- 🌙 Go to "Settings» → «Sound and vibration» → «Don't disturb».
- 📅 Check the Repeat section and make sure the mode is not active on schedule.
- 📞 Check the rules of blocking: are calls from the chosen ones allowed?
- 🔔 Check if the option “Silence of unknown numbers” is included».
Spam blocking and call filtering
Xiaomi’s built-in antivirus and spam protection systems can be set up too aggressively. If the phone automatically drops calls from certain numbers or all unknown subscribers, it’s the work of Antispam, which can flag numbers as advertising or fraudulent and block them without you.
Go to the Security app and look for the Antispam section, where you can look up the lock log and set up a blacklist. If you're waiting for a call from a courier or a doctor and their number is identified as Unknown or Advertising, the phone can automatically reset.
Hidden Filtration Settings
It's also worth checking out third-party apps if they're installed. Apps like Truecaller or GetContact can intercept call management and operate under their own, more stringent rules.
| Type of filtration | Where to find out. | Possible action |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword Blocking | Antispam → SMS | Remove the rules |
| Blocking of unknowns | Call settings | Shut down. |
| Blacklist | Contacts → Blacklist | Check the list |
| Silence mode. | Sound and vibration | Remove the restriction |
Third-party applications and software conflicts
Conflicts between a standard Google or MIUI Dialer call and third-party apps are common causes of failure. If you recently installed an app to record calls, an automatic secretary or number detector, the problem may lie within it, such applications require advanced access rights and can intercept control of the audio stream.
Try running your phone in Safe Mode. Only system applications are running in Safe Mode. If the problem is gone in Safe Mode, it's one of the apps you installed, and delete them one by one, starting with the ones that are related to communication.
⚠️ Note: When removing applications, be sure to reset the default apps settings to make calls, otherwise the system may lose its way to the dialer.
It's also worth clearing the cache and the data of the Phone app itself, and the accumulated errors in the call database can lead to incorrect processing of incoming signals, a safe operation that won't delete your contacts, but reset your call settings.
- 🗑️ Go to "Settings» → «Annexes» → «All applications».
- 📞 Find the phone (or Google Phone).
- 💾 Press "Clear» → «Clear the cache" and "Clear all data».
- 🔄 Restart the device and check the result.
Hardware problems and repairs
If software methods didn't work, there's a hardware problem to consider: moisture trapped inside the housing can cause the plume contacts to close, which the system perceives as a touch or a command, and the problem may be in the touchscreen itself - "phantom presses" often occur during calls when the screen goes out, but the sensor continues to send signals.
Check if the battery is swelling. In some Xiaomi models, the swelling battery starts to push the display plumes and motherboard from the inside, causing chaotic behavior, a serious problem that requires immediate access to the service.
If the phone fell, the proximity connector or the display plume could move away, and a careful tap on the top of the body (where the speaker is) can temporarily restore contact, confirming the diagnosis, but this is only a temporary measure.
💡
Try turning on "Touch Display" in developer mode, and this will let you see if the screen registers phantom-touches when you're not touching it.
Resetting and system update
A radical but effective way to solve software bugs is to reset to factory settings. Before that, make sure to back up your data to the Mi Cloud or your computer. Reset will delete all user data, but return the system to its original state, in which the autoresponse should not work.
Also check for MIUI or HyperOS updates. Newer firmware versions often fix sensor and call errors. If you have a beta version of the firmware, consider rolling back to a stable version, as test builds may contain bugs.
To perform the reset, go to the recovery menu, make sure that the battery is at least 50% so that the process does not interrupt. This is critical, since interrupting the reset can make it impossible to boot the system.
💡
A full Wipe Data reset is the latest software measure, and if the phone continues to behave strangely after that, the problem is 99% hardware and requires replacement of sensors or plumes.
