The appearance of a mysterious human icon in a floating window on the screen of a Xiaomi smartphone is often a surprise to users. This interface element, known as the special feature button, is activated accidentally when you press volume buttons for a long time or as a result of a failure in the system. It not only covers part of the useful area of the display, but can also interfere with normal navigation on the menu.
Sometimes this mode is activated because the device owner accidentally pinches the audio control keys in his pocket or bag, at which point the system reads the action as an SOS signal or a request for help, launching TalkBack or other accessibility services. For most people who have no vision or motor problems, this feature becomes more of an obstacle than an assistant.
In this article, we will discuss how to get rid of an obtrusive button and completely deactivate the associated functions. We will look at various methods, ranging from standard interface settings to deeper system parameters if the usual path is not available.
What is a special feature button and why does it appear?
What is commonly referred to as the “Special Opportunity Button” is actually a shortcut for quick access to disability services. In MIUI and HyperOS, this element can look different, whether it’s a human icon, a floating sphere, or an ear icon, the tool’s primary purpose is to provide instant access to TalkBack, screen zoom in, or voice control.
The appearance of the button on the screen is most often associated with the activation of the so-called "hot keyboard shortcut." Xiaomi's default system is set to react when you press the power button five times or press the volume keys for a long time, this is done for emergency cases when the user needs to quickly turn on the voice interface.
💡
If the button comes on suddenly, try pressing and holding both volume buttons simultaneously for 3-5 seconds – this is the standard way to force TalkBack to shut down on many Xiaomi models.
It's important to understand that the button itself is just a control interface. Disabling the visual element does not always mean completely deactivating the availability services, which can continue to consume RAM resources, so it's important to understand the settings comprehensively.
- 👁️ TalkBack – voices all actions on the screen for the visually impaired.
- ✋ Enlargement – allows you to scale part of the screen with a triple touch.
- 🔊 Improver – enhances sound and vibration for people with hearing impairment.
Quickly shut down via the settings menu
The easiest and safest way to remove the annoying element is to use the regular smartphone settings menu. Even if the button interferes with the view, the standard path through Settings usually remains available unless the full TalkBack gesture management mode is enabled.
First, you open the main menu and find the Settings section, and then the path may vary slightly depending on the firmware version, but the logic remains the same. You'll need to find the item associated with additional system parameters. In newer versions of HyperOS, it's often hidden in the Advanced Settings submenu.
☑️ Shutdown algorithm
Once you go to the right section, you'll see a list of all active services. Find the switch that's responsible for the special feature shortcut or "Shortcut." Put it in an inactive position. The system can request confirmation of action, warning that access to the help features will be limited.
| MIUI version | The path to adjustment | Name of the switch |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 11-12 | Settings → Advanced → Special. capabilities | Special Opportunity Label |
| MIUI 13-14 | Settings → Additional settings → Special. capabilities | Shortcut (Tagline) |
| HyperOS | Settings → Special. opportunities → Visual | Special Opportunity Menu |
| Android Go | Settings → System → Special Opportunities | Accessibility button |
⚠️ Warning: If you try to press the switch, your phone starts to voice every action you take and requires a double tap to confirm it, you have TalkBack mode activated, in which case normal touchscreen control is blocked.
Deactivation through voice assistant and hot keys
If visual management is difficult or the settings menu is unavailable due to availability mode enabled, alternative methods come to the rescue: Google Assistant or built-in Xiao AI (in Chinese versions) can execute a command to turn off the service without having to poke the screen.
Activate the voice assistant by saying "Ok Google" or by holding the assistant call button. Say clearly "Stop TalkBack" or "Switch off special features." The system will try to find the appropriate switch and change its state. This method does not work on all versions of firmware, but it is worth trying first.
Secret combination to unlock
Another effective way is to use the keyboard combination that originally enabled this feature: Try to press up and down the volume buttons for 3-5 seconds at the same time. On many Xiaomi devices, this action acts as a trigger: if the service is active, it will turn off, if it is turned off, it will turn on.
- 🗣️ Use the “Stop TalkBack” command via Google Assistant.
- 🔘 Press both volume buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds.
- 🔌 Connect. USB-mouse-wise OTG-adapter for precise cursor control.
Use of the USB-mouse-over OTG — If the touchscreen is unpredictable, the mouse will allow you to find the menu items you want and turn off the service, because the computer mouse usually ignores the accessibility control gestures while operating in standard mode.
Managing Accessibility Services in MIUI and HyperOS
With the release of new versions of the operating system, the menu structure in Xiaomi smartphones is changing. In the current HyperOS shell, engineers have reworked the logic of the configuration grouping, focusing on visual perception.
To find the right settings in the new system, go to Settings → Special Opportunities. Here you will see three big cards. The button we want to get rid of is most often hidden in the Visuals section. Inside this section, look for the Special Opportunity Menu or Shortcut.
💡
In HyperOS, availability settings are placed in a separate high menu on the main settings screen, which simplifies search, but requires careful consideration when choosing a subcategory.
In older versions of MIUI (up to and including version 12), all of these settings were piled up in the "Advanced" section, where there was no categorization, and the shortcut switch was immediately after the list of installed apps using accessibility, which created the risk of accidental inclusion.
It is also important to check the "Installed Services" section. Sometimes third-party applications, such as file managers or launchers, may request permission to create floating buttons. If you do not recognize the system icon, check the list of third-party programs. Disabling permissions for a suspicious application can remove the button.
The Problem of Accidental Activation and How to Avoid It
Even after successfully disabling the button, many users find that it reappears after a while, because of the stored hot key setting. The system continues to monitor button presses, and an accidental hit in the pocket triggers the service again.
To prevent this, you need to turn off the activation buttons. Go back to the Special Opportunities menu and find a item that may be called "Special Opportunity Shortcut" (not to be confused with the button on the screen), and uncheck the box from "Hold Volume buttons" or "Hit 5 times the Power button."
⚠️ Warning: Turning off the hotkeys will prevent you from calling for help in an emergency quickly. Make sure you have other emergency calls configured, such as through a screen locker.
It's also worth checking the case settings. Some Xiaomi smart cases have magnetic fasteners or extra buttons that can mimic taps. If the button only appears in the case, the accessory may be the problem.
- 🚫 Turn off the option “Hold Volume buttons” in the shortcut settings.
- 🔢 Remove the tick from "5 presses of the power button".
- 📱 Check if the protective glass or cover creates false presses.
Another reason could be "pocket taps." In the screen settings, find the "Mode in your pocket" function and make sure it's active, which will help shield false touchscreen signals when the phone is in the dark.
Resetting special features and system settings
If the button doesn’t disappear, hangs on the screen constantly, or behaves inadequately (for example, does not press or overlaps the entire interface), there may be a software failure in the SystemUI module or the accessibility service itself, in which case resetting the settings of a particular component will help.
Go to Settings → Apps → All Apps. In the list, find “Special Features” (or “Accessibility”, “Google Play Services”). Click on the app and select “Clear Data” and “Clear Cache”, which will return the component to factory status without losing the user’s personal files.
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.accessibilityFor advanced users who own the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) tool, it is possible to force the component to disable via a computer. The command above (for example) disables the availability package. However, using ADB requires accurate knowledge of the package name of your version of MIUI, since an incorrect command can lead to unstable system operation.
In extreme cases, if nothing helps and the button blocks the device, you may need a full reset to factory settings (Hard Reset).Remember, this action will delete all data from the phone, so pre-create a backup in the cloud Mi Cloud or on your computer.
