The automatic capital letter at the beginning of a sentence is a useful feature for business correspondence, but it often interferes with messengers, social networks or passwords. On Xiaomi smartphones, this option is enabled by default in the Gboard (Google) or Mi Keyboard system keyboard, and can also be duplicated by MIUI settings. Unlike other Android devices, it sometimes requires you to turn it off in several places.
In this article, we'll look at the current ways for MIUI 12-14 (including global and Chinese firmware), as well as solutions for specific applications: WhatsApp, Telegram, VK, and others. We'll look at why the feature can turn on again after a system update, and how to prevent it. If you use Poco Launcher or custom firmware, there's a separate section at the end with nuances.
Why do Xiaomi automatically have capital letters?
Auto-Capitalization functions on three levels:
- 📱 The system keyboard is Gboard or Mi Keyboard (depending on the firmware region), where the setting is responsible for the behavior in all applications.
- 🔧 Settings MIUI — In some versions of the firmware there is a duplicate option in the menu Language and input.
- 💬 Individual applications – messengers can ignore system settings and use their own algorithms (for example, Telegram before version 9.5.0).
Xiaomi with China ROM often has the Mi Keyboard, where the option is hidden deeper than in Gboard. In addition, after upgrading the MIUI to a new version (for example, from 13 to 14), the settings can be reset – this is a bug confirmed on the Mi Community forums.
Method 1: Disable in Gboard settings (for global firmware)
If your Xiaomi is running on Global ROM, it's likely that the default keyboard is Gboard, to remove the automatic capital letter:
- Open any field to enter text (such as notes or WhatsApp message).
- Touch the badge. ⚙️ (gear) on the keyboard to open its settings.
- Go to Text Entering → Autocapital letters.
- Turn off the slider next to the item Automatically with a capital letter.
Important: Gboard has a separate setting for Double Capitals after a dot – it’s also worth turning off if you don’t want the next word to start with a capital letter after abbreviations (e.g., i.e.).

Method 2: Setup Mi Keyboard (for Chinese firmware)
On Xiaomi with China ROM or Mi Keyboard, the path to settings is different. Here, the feature is called Auto-capitalization, but it can be displayed in Chinese.
- Press the space on the keyboard and select the keyboard settings.
- Go to Additional Settings → Text Input.
- Find Autocapital letters (or characters) and turn it off.
- Save the changes and restart the keyboard (close and reopen any text-input application).
On some models (e.g. Redmi Note 11 with MIUI 13.0.5), this option may not be available in the interface, in which case only resetting the keyboard settings or installing an alternative one (see Method 5) will help.
What to do if there is no "Autocapital letters"?
Method 3: Disable via MIUI settings (for all firmware)
In some versions of MIUI (especially 12-13), autocapital function is duplicated in system settings, which can lead to the fact that even after switching off the keyboard, the letter is still automatically put to fix this:
- Open Settings → System → Language and input.
- Select Virtual Keyboard → Keyboard settings (or Gboard/Mi Keyboard, depending on the one installed).
- Find the text input section and turn off: 🔠 Autocapital letters 🔠 Automatic punctuation (if it interferes with)
Reboot your smartphone – this will help to apply changes to all applications.
If your MIUI version doesn’t have this path, try an alternative route:
Settings → Applications → Application Management → Three dots (⋮) → Special access → Keyboard💡
After updating MIUI, the keyboard settings may reset. To avoid this, back up Settings → About Phone → Backup before the update and select System Settings.
Method 4: Set up for specific applications
Some messengers and social networks ignore the system settings of the keyboard and use their own algorithms of autocapital letters.

Telegram and VK may not have autocapital settings if you are using an outdated version of the app. Update them via Google Play or Mi App Store.
⚠️ Note: WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger don’t have separate options to turn off autocapital letters – they only depend on the keyboard settings. If the problem persists, try changing the keyboard (see Method 5).
Method 5: Install an alternative keyboard
If none of these methods worked, the most reliable option is to install a third-party keyboard, where autocapital settings are more flexible.
- ⭐ SwiftKey (Microsoft) – allows you to disable autocapital letters separately for each language.
- 📱 Fleksy – Minimalist keyboard with advanced text settings.
- 🔍 AnySoftKeyboard – open source, full control over autocorrection.
To install and configure an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play (like SwiftKey).
- Open Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual keyboard.
- Activate the new keyboard and set it by default.
- In the keyboard settings, find the Auto Replace/Auto-Capital section and disable unnecessary options.
Advantage: Third-party keyboards don’t reset after the MIUI update, unlike standard Gboard or Mi Keyboard.

If after changing the keyboard autocapital letters still appear – check the settings of a particular messenger (Method 4) or clear the application cache in Settings → Applications.
Frequent problems and solutions
Even after disabling autocaps, Xiaomi users are facing a return of the feature.
- 🔄 Reset after update MIUI — Before the update, make a backup copy of the keyboard settings (see Method 3).
- 📱 Conflict with the theme of design - some topics MIUI (For example, Dark Mode can reset settings. Try to return a standard theme.
- 🔧 Cache Error – Clear the keyboard cache in Settings → Annexes → Gboard/Mi Keyboard → Memory. → Clear the cache.
- 📲 Browser input fields – in Chrome or Mi Browser, autocapital letters can be turned on separately. Open your browser settings and turn off Autocomplete forms.
If the problem persists, check if the phone has autocorrection apps (such as Grammarly or LanguageTool) that can override system settings.
⚠️ Note: Xiaomi with HyperOS (new firmware after) MIUI 14) the path to the keyboard settings has changed. → Connected devices → Keyboard and input methods.
Features for Poco Launcher and custom firmware
If you're using a Poco Launcher or custom firmware (like LineageOS, Pixel Experience), the standard methods may not work.
- 🛠️ Poco Launcher - Keyboard settings are independent of launcher. Use Method 1 or 2 depending on the keyboard installed.
- 📱 Custom firmware – if autocapital letters are turned on by themselves, check: Language & Input settings in the developer menu (Settings) → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 I'll just go with it. /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl (Root rights are required).
- 🔧 Xposed Framework – If installed, modules like Gboard Tweaks can conflict with settings.
On firmware Pixel Experience or Havoc-OS sometimes helps reset keyboard settings to factory:
