Why does Xiaomi phone turn on the screen when lifted?
Raise to Wake is one of those MIUI features that is meant to make life easier but often annoying. The smartphone activates the screen whenever you change the angle of inclination, even if you just move it into your pocket or take it from the table. For some, itβs convenient, but many Xiaomi Redmi, Poco or Mi users are faced with random taps, battery drains and sensors firing at the wrong moment.
Complicating the problem, newer versions of MIUI (especially 13-14) have their settings hidden deep in the menu or not at all, and even experienced users are sometimes lost in trying to find the switch. In this article, we will look at all the working ways to disable, from standard to hidden, including methods for devices with MIUI Global, MIUI China and custom firmware.
Method 1: Standard shutdown via MIUI settings
The most obvious way is to use the built-in options, but there is a caveat: depending on the version of MIUI and the phone model (Redmi Note 12, Xiaomi 13, Poco F5, etc.), the location of the item may differ.
- MIUI 14 (Global/EU/China): Go to Settings β Display β Additional β Raise to wake up and move the slider to off.. On some devices, the path may look like Settings β Screen β Advanced Settings β Awaken when lifted.
- MIUI 12β13: Open Settings β Screen Lock β Advanced Settings β Raise to wake up. If no point, check Settings β Display β Sleep Mode.
- Poco Launcher: Poco owners sometimes have to look for the option in Settings β Additional β Gestures β Awakening when lifting.
β οΈ Note: Some models (e.g. Redmi) 10C Xiaomi 11 Lite, or Ambient Display, can be called Always-on Display, or Disable it if the main switch is missing.

Method 2: Disconnecting through Developer Mode
If the standard method didn't work, try deactivating the function through hidden settings.
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version and tap it 7 times until a notification appears You became a developer!.
- Open the settings β Additional β for developers.
- Find the Awakening When Raising (or Accidental Touch Protection) option and turn it off.
β οΈ Note: On some firmware (for example, MIUI China) this item may not be available. In this case, try the following method.

Method 3: Use ADB-Teams (for experienced teams)
If none of the previous methods worked, the radical method is to disable the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which requires connecting the phone to a PC and executing commands.
- Download and install ADB Tools on your computer.
- Enable USB Debugging in Settings β For Developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and type in the command line: adb shell settings put global wake_gesture_enabled 0
- Reset the device.
Important: This command turns off all wake-up gestures, including double tapping. To return only double tapping, use:
adb shell settings put global tap_to_wake_enabled 1Double touch.|Lifting the phone|Power button|Approximation sensor|I don't use it.-->
Method 4: Disabling sensors (radical method)
If the problem is caused by hypersensitivity of the accelerometer or gyroscope, you can temporarily calibrate or turn off the sensors, which will help if the screen wakes up even with a slight movement of the phone in your pocket.
- π± Sensor calibration: Install the Sensor Calibration app from Google Play and follow the instructions. Sometimes a failure in the accelerometer leads to false positives.
- βοΈ Disconnect via Engineering Menu: Dial in the phone application ##4636##, select Equipment Testing β Sensors and check the accelerometer readings, if the values jump for no reason, it may need repairs.
β οΈ Warning: Disabling sensors completely can disrupt other functions, such as automatic screen rotation or pedometer. Use this method only if other methods have not helped.
π‘
Before calibrating the sensors, place the phone on a flat surface and wait until the accelerometer readings stabilize (values on the X and Y axes should be close to 0, and Z - to 9.8).
Table: Compatibility of methods with Xiaomi models
| Model phone | MIUI 12 | MIUI 13 | MIUI 14 | ADB-team |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | β | β (viaΒ») | β | β |
| Redmi Note 12 Pro+ | β | β | β | β |
| Poco F5 | β | β (gesticΒ») | β | β |
| Xiaomi 11T | β | β | β | β |
| Redmi 10A | β (in βBlockingΒ») | β | β | β |
π Note: If your model is not in the table, try the methods for the nearest model to release. For example, Redmi Note 11 will suit the settings from Redmi Note 12.
What do you do if nothing helps?
If youβve tried all the ways but the screen still wakes up when lifted, the following reasons are possible:
- π Firmware failure: Update MIUI Up to the latest version or reset settings (but donβt forget to back up!).
- π οΈ Hardware malfunction: A damaged accelerometer or gyroscope may give false signals, in which case only a service center will help.
- π± Third-party apps: Some programs (such as Tasker or MacroDroid) can emulate wakefulness. β Annexes β Permits β Auto-start.
π‘ Useful advice: If the problem has occurred after the update MIUI, Try to revert to the previous version via Fastboot or MI Flash Tool. Instructions can be found on forums 4PDA or XDA Developers.

Before resetting your settings or rolling back your firmware, be sure to save your data! Use Mi Cloud or local backup in Settings β About Phone β Backup.
