How to Remove the Automatic Big Letter on Xiaomi Keyboard: 5 Ways to Use MIUI

You type a message on Xiaomi, and the keyboard stubbornly replaces the first letter with a capital letter — even when you don't need it? This feature, called autocapitalization, is useful for official emails, but annoying in chats, search queries or logins. In Xiaomi smartphones based on MIUI, you can turn it off in several ways — depending on the keyboard and the version of the firmware used.

Complicating the problem is that the manufacturer regularly updates the interface: in MIUI 12, the path to settings is different from MIUI 14, and the standard Xiaomi keyboard behaves differently than Google’s Gboard. We tested all the current methods on devices from Redmi Note 10 Pro to Xiaomi 13 Ultra — and collected working solutions for each case.

Why does the keyboard automatically put a big letter?

Autocapitalization is the default feature in most keyboards, and it works by three basic rules:

• 📱 After the point/exclamation point: The keyboard takes this as the beginning of a new sentence.
• 🔠 At the beginning of the input field: many instant messengers (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) send a signal to the keyboard that the text is a “new message".
• 🔍 In forced capitalization: some applications (such as Google Search) forcefully include capitalization letters for user convenience.

On Xiaomi smartphones, this logic can be reinforced by proprietary MIUI algorithms. For example, in the standard Xiaomi keyboard (com.miui.miuiboard), autocapitalization is more aggressive than in Gboard, due to integration with translation services and predictive dialing. In addition, after MIUI updates, settings are sometimes reset — so even if you previously disabled the feature, it can return.

Method 1: Disable in the settings of the standard MIUI keyboard

If you use a Xiaomi branded keyboard (default), follow this instruction. Please note that the path may vary slightly depending on the version of MIUI (the brackets indicate options for different firmware).

1. Open any application with a keyboard (such as Messages or Notes).
2. Touch the gears. ⚙️ On the keyboard panel (or hold 123) → Choose "Settings").

In MIUI 14.0.5+ (released March 2026), the path has changed: now go to Settings → Additional → Language and Input → Virtual Keyboard → MIUI Keyboard → Text → Auto-Replacement. If you have this version but don’t have the option, update the keyboard via Google Play (yes, even standard!).

Method 2: Setting up Gboard (Google keyboard)

Many Xiaomi users install Gboard instead of a standard keyboard, in which case the autocapitalization disabling algorithm is different and more flexible.

1. Open any text field and tap the icon. ⚙️ Gboard panel.
2. Select Text Settings (or Text Correction if the interface is in English).
3. Go to Auto-correction (Auto-correction).
4. Turn off the option "Auto-capitalization" (Auto-capitalization).

If it still works after you turn off autocapitalization in Gboard, clear the app's cache in Settings → Apps → Gboard → Memory → Clear the cache. This will reset the temporary data of predictive input.

Method 3: Reset keyboard settings to factory

If autocapitalization doesn't go off through the menu, you may have lost your keyboard settings, and then you might want to reset to factory settings. Attention: this will remove all the saved words from the user's dictionary and your input history.

⚠️ Note: After reset, you will have to retrain your keyboard to write your writing style, and we recommend that you pre-export the custom dictionary (if this option is available in your version of the keyboard).

Instructions for the standard MIUI keyboard:

1. Go to Settings → System and Device → Language and Entering → Virtual Keyboard.
2. Select the MIUI (or Mi Keyboard) keyboard.
3. Press More. → Resetting settings.
4. Confirm the action and restart the phone.

For Gboard:

1. Open Settings → Applications → Application Management → Gboard.
2. Select Memory → Clear data (not just cache!).
3. Run the keyboard again and configure it from scratch.

Method 4: Use ADB-Teams (for experienced users)

If standard methods don't work, you can turn off autocapitalization via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) which requires connecting the phone to a computer and basic command line knowledge. The method works on all versions of MIUI, but is not recommended for beginners - the wrong commands can disrupt the system.

Instructions:

1. Turn on USB debugging on your phone: Settings → About Phone → MIUI version (click 7 times until the message “You’re a developer” appears). Then go back to Settings → Additional → Developer and activate debugging.
2. Connect your phone to your PC and open the command line (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux).
3. Enter the commands in turn: adb shell settings put secure auto_capitalization 0 adb shell settings put secure auto_capitalization_after_i 0
4. Reboot the phone.

To get back to autocap, replace 0 with 1 in commands. If nothing changes after completing commands, check if the keyboard settings overlap the system settings.

Method 5: Installation of an alternative keyboard

If none of these methods worked, consider changing the keyboard. Some alternative applications offer more flexible autocapitalization settings.-3 variants compatible with MIUI:

After installing the alternative keyboard, remember to make it the default keyboard:

1. Go to Settings → System and Device → Language and Entering → Virtual Keyboard.
2. Activate the new keyboard and select it from the list of "Current Keyboard".

Alternative keyboards often offer additional features, such as gestures or themes, but they can consume more memory and affect the autonomy of the device.

Frequent problems and solutions

Even after the auto cap has been turned off, Xiaomi users are faced with nuances, and here are the most common situations and ways to solve them:

• 🔄 Settings are reset after the update MIUI: This is a well-known problem in Xiaomi firmware. after major updates (e.g., with a new version of the software). MIUI 13 on MIUI 14) some keyboard settings are back to factory settings. Solution: check the settings after each update.
