Choosing a region in Xiaomi devices is a seemingly simple procedure, but it depends on the available features, interface languages, preinstalled applications and even firmware stability. The wrong region can lead to a lack of support for local services (for example, Google Play or Mi Pay), restrictions in the theme store, and in some cases problems with software updates.
In this article, weβll look at how to change the region on Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi smartphones (including MIUI and HyperOS models), as well as Mi TVs and other smart gadgets of the brand. Youβll learn which regions are officially supported, how to circumvent restrictions and what to do if the device becomes incorrect after a change in region.
Why to change the region in Xiaomi and what it leads to
The region of Xiaomi devices defines not only the interface language, but also:
- π± A set of pre-installed apps: you wonβt find Google Services in Chinese firmware, but Mi App Store and Mi Video with content for China.
- π Availability of services: for example, Mi Pay works only in supported countries (Russia, India, China, etc.).
However, changing your region is not always a safe procedure, for example, if you bought a device with firmware for India (IN) and try to switch to Europe (EU), you may have problems with:
- π Charging: Some models limit charging current by region (e.g., the Redmi Note 12 in India charges slower than in Europe).
β οΈ Note: On devices with a locked bootloader (most Xiaomi smartphones for China), changing the region through the engineering menu can lead to blocking the Mi Account.
How to find out the current region on the smartphone Xiaomi
Before you change the region, check which one is installed now, and you can do this in several ways:
Method 1. Through the MIUI/HyperOS settings
- Open the Settings. β The phone.
- Find the MIUI version or HyperOS version.
- The last 2 letters in the version denote the region: RU - Russia, EU - Europe, IN - India, CN - China.
Method 2. Through code ##4636##
Enter the combination ##4636## in the phone application, then go to the Phone Information tab. The Network section will specify the current MCC/MNC (mobile network code) from which you can identify the region.
Method 3. Through the "Security" application
In some firmware, the region is displayed in Settings β Memory β Storage (under System Data) if there is a Region:XX string where XX is the country code.
The official way to change the region (without risks)
The safest method is to change the region through MIUI or HyperOS settings. It is suitable for most global firmware (Global, EEA, RU), but does not work on the Chinese version (CN).
Step-by-step:
- Open Settings β Additional β Region (in HyperOS, the path may differ: Settings β System β Language and Region).
- Choose the right country from the list. If your country is not, try the nearest region (for example, Kazakhstan is Russia, for Ukraine is Europe).
- Confirm the change and restart the device.
β οΈ Note: On some models (e.g, POCO X5 Pro) after the region change, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings are reset!
Make a backup copy of the data|Remember passwords from Wi-Fi|Check the version. MIUI/HyperOS|Make sure the device is charged on 50%+|Disable two-factor authentication in Mi Account (if any)-->
Changing the region on Chinese firmware (CN β Global)
If your device is originally designed for China (CN), the official way to change the region won't work, and there are two options:
Option 1: Install global firmware via Fastboot
This is a radical method that requires unlocking the bootloader, suitable for power users.
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool (requires a binding Mi Account and wait 7-15 days).
- Download Fastboot firmware for your model from MIUI Downloads (choose Global or EEA).
- Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (clip Volume Down + Power when the device is off).
- Run the script. flash_all.bat firmware-film.
Option 2: Region change via ADB (without unlocking)
This method works on some models (e.g. Redmi Note 11, Xiaomi 12T) and does not require unlocking the bootloader, but can reset the settings to factory.
adb shell settings put global region XX
adb rebootWhere XX is the region code:
- ru - Russia,
- eu is Europe,
- in - India,
- Us, USA.
β οΈ Attention: After completion ADB-The device can hang on the Xiaomi logo, in which case you will have to reset through Recovery. + Nutrition).

How to Change Regions on Mi TV and Mi Box
On Xiaomi TVs and Mi Box consoles, region change affects the availability of streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, OKKO) and supported terrestrial TV permissions. Officially, you can change the region only at the first setup, but there are workarounds.
Method 1. Reset to factory settings
- Go to Settings β Device β Reset and Reset β Reset settings.
- After rebooting at the initial setup stage, select the desired region.
Method 2: Change the region through ADB (for experienced)
Connect the TV to your PC via ADB (enable debugging in Settings β About TV β Android version, press 7 times on the line with the version) and execute the command:
adb shell settings put global country XXWhere XX is the country code (e.g. RU for Russia) and then reboot the TV.
| Region | Code. | Affordable services | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russia (RU) | ru | OKKO, Amediateka, TNT-Premier | No Netflix in 4K |
| Europe (EU) | eu | Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video | No Russian channels |
| India (IN) | in | Hotstar, JioCinema | Limited choice of languages |
| China (CN) | cn | iQiyi, Youku | No Google Play. |

If some apps (e.g. Netflix) are missing after changing region to Mi TV, clear the cache and app data in Settings β Apps.
Problems after the change of the region and how to solve them
Even if you did it right, you might have problems after you change your region, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
Problem 1: Google Play is not working.
If you switched from Chinese firmware (CN) to global, but Google Play is still missing:
- Install Google Installer from the Mi App Store (if you have one in your area).
- Download. APK-Google Services Framework and Google Play Services files from APKMirror and install them manually.
Problem 2: The firmware is not updated
If updates have stopped coming after the change in the region:
- Check that in Settings β About Phone β System update the correct branch (Stable or Developer) is selected.
- Download the firmware manually from MIUI Downloads and install it through Recovery.
Problem 3: Settings have reset
If, after the region change, saved Wi-Fi networks, accounts or application data are lost:
- Restore backup from Settings β Additional β Backup.
- If there is no backup, reconfigure the device manually (passwords from Wi-Fi can be viewed on the router).

If the device is slower after changing the region, reset the cache to Recovery (not to be confused with a full reset!). To do this, select Wipe cache partition from the Recovery menu.
Hidden Settings: Engineering Menu and MIUI Hidden Settings
Some MIUI and HyperOS firmware have hidden region settings that are not displayed in the standard interface, and can be accessed through an engineering menu or special applications.
Method 1: Engineering menu (MTK-chip)
For MediaTek processor devices (e.g. Redmi 9A, POCO C31):
- Enter the code ##36446337##.
- Go to the Connectivity section β Network Selection.
- Find the Region Selection option and select the desired region.
Method 2. MIUI Hidden Settings Application
Download MIUI Hidden Settings (or Activity Launcher) from Google Play and:
- Open the System Settings section.
- Find activity called RegionSettings or CountrySettings.
- Select a region from the extended list (there may be options that are not available in the standard settings).
Method 3. Editing build.prop
For power users: You can manually change the region by editing the build.prop file.
ro.product.locale.region=XXand replace XX to the desired code (for example, ru for Russia). After saving, restart the device.
β οΈ Warning: Incorrect editing of build.prop can lead to bootloop ( looped reboot!
