The situation when the icon of the desired application suddenly disappears from the desktop is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones. This can happen after a system update, accidental touch or a launcher malfunction. You should not panic in this situation, since in most cases these applications are not deleted, but only hidden from the user's eyes.
Restoring access to the program depends on what caused the disappearance: the MIUI shell crash, activation of the pocket mode, or accidental removal of the shortcut itself. Android is designed so that the application and its icon are different entities, and we will analyze all possible scenarios, from simple display settings to deep reset system components.
Before you start to do complex manipulations, you need to understand where exactly the object went missing, and most often it is simply moved to a folder or in the Recycle Bin if you use a theme with this feature, and a careful analysis of the current desktop configuration will save you time and nerves.
Checking hidden apps and folders on the desktop
The first step is to eliminate human and interface features, because the HyperOS shell and older versions of MIUI allow you to hide applications or hide them in special system folders, and users often accidentally drag one shortcut to another, creating a new group that is forgotten after a minute.
Take a close look at all the desktop pages and open each folder. Sometimes the icon may be inside another folder with games or utilities. If you use third-party themes, check their settings, as some of them have their own Hidden Applications feature, different from the system one.
To find hidden programs, follow the following steps:
- 📱 Make a pinch with two fingers on your desktop to open the edit menu, and find the Hidden Apps button».
- 🔍 Enter the name of the missing program in the search bar of the global search (swipe down the center of the screen).
- 📂 Check the Tools or Google folder, where the system will often automatically sort new or updated shortcuts.
If a global search results but there is no icon on the desktop, the app is installed but the shortcut is removed, in which case you need to create a new shortcut manually through the menu of all applications.
Recovering shortcuts through the menu of all applications
If the icon has disappeared from the home page, but the program itself works, the easiest way to return it is through a common menu. In the settings of the Xiaomi desktop, there are two modes: classic (like on the iPhone) and mode with the menu of all applications (like on pure Android), which depends on the algorithm of your actions.
In No App Menu mode, all installed programs are on desktops, and if you delete the shortcut in this mode, it disappears completely. However, if you have an app menu on, deleting the desktop only removes the link, not the program itself. To return the icon, go to the menu of all the apps, find the desired program, pinch it with your finger and drag it to the desktop.
In some cases, standard drag and drop may not work due to a temporary launcher failure, so you should try an alternative method:

- 📲 Find the app that has been missing in the list and select shortcut creation.

It is important to note that shortcut recovery is only possible if the application has not been removed from the device's memory, and if the program has been uninstalled, it will have to be downloaded from Google Play or GetApps again.
Configure the display of icons in system parameters

Cleaning the data of the system application “Security” and Launcher
One of the most effective ways to solve the problem is to clean the cache of system components, the system application Louncher (or System Launcher) is responsible for displaying shortcuts, and the Security app is often responsible for protecting and hiding them, and their failure leads to the disappearance of icons.
To do the cleaning, go to Settings → Apps → All apps. In the list, look for Security (a green shield icon). Click on it, select Memory and click Clear (clean, not delete). Then search for the Louncher or System Launcher app and repeat the procedure.
Once the data is cleaned, the desktop can restart and all icons will fall into place by default. If that doesn't work, try a more radical method - removing launcher updates:
- Find the “System Launcher” in the list of applications.
- In the bottom corner of the screen, click “Delete Updates”.
