Why do we need to record conversations and what the law says

The Xiaomi Redmi 9T’s phone record feature can be useful in a variety of situations, from fixing important business agreements to preserving evidence in controversial moments.

From a legal point of view, in Russia, recording conversations is allowed only with the consent of the interlocutor (Article 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation on the right to secrecy of correspondence and negotiations), except for cases when the recording is kept for personal use without distribution to third parties. In other countries (for example, in the EU), the rules may differ - there is often a requirement to notify the interlocutor of the recording at the beginning of the conversation.

Technically, the Redmi 9T running MIUI has a built-in recording feature, but it doesn't work with all carriers and firmware versions. If the standard method doesn't work, third-party apps will come to the rescue, which we'll talk about later.

Method 1: Built-in call recording in MIUI

The easiest method is to use the standard MIUI feature, which is available on most Xiaomi smartphones, including the Redmi 9T. However, its availability depends on the firmware version and regional settings.

1. Open the Phone app (the tube icon on the home screen).
2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
3. Go to the Call Record section (if not, see the next method).
4. Activate the Write automatically switch or select Write manually.

If there is no Call Recording section, this may mean:

• 📵 Your carrier blocks the function (for example, MTS or Beeline in some regions).
• 🔄 You have an outdated version. MIUI (Update the firmware through Settings → The phone. → Updating the system).
• 🌍 The phone is purchased for the Indian or Chinese market, where recording features may be limited.

Where to look for saved records? They appear in the Record/CallRecord folder in internal memory or in the Dictaphone app. On Redmi 9T with MIUI 12.5+, the records are automatically transcribed into text if you turn on the option in the voice recorder settings.

Method 2: Third-party applications for recording

If the built-in feature is not available, third-party utilities will come to the rescue, and we tested several popular solutions and selected the best ones for Redmi 9T:

Before installing any of these applications:

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Permissions and give access to the Microphone, Warehouse and Phone.
2. In the battery settings (Settings → Battery → Battery Optimization) disable optimization for the selected application.
3. Launch the application and configure the write parameters (file format, save folder, exceptions).

If the app doesn’t record calls, try turning on the developer mode (Settings → About Phone → MIUI version – press 7 times) and activate the option Do not turn off the screen during the call in the developer settings.

Phone records contain sensitive information, so protecting them is critical. Here are some tips for Redmi 9T owners:

In rare cases, neither built-in features nor third-party apps can record a call to Redmi 9T.

1. Turn on speakerphone + external voice recorder: Put the call on speakerphone and record the conversation using a second device (for example, another smartphone or voice recorder), minus poor sound quality and echo.
2. Use a headset with a record: Some Bluetooth headsets (such as Sony WH-1000XM4 or Jabra Elite) have a conversation recording feature. Connect them to Redmi 9T and activate the recording via the companion app of the headset.
3. Google Voice (for international calls): Google Voice automatically records incoming calls after pressing 4 during a call. It only works for U.S. and Canadian numbers, but can be used via a VPN.

For methods with external recording, consider:
