Xiaomi smartphone owners running MIUI or HyperOS shells often face aggressive energy saving, which blocks the background of applications by default, leading to delays in receiving messages or no audio signals.
To make messengers and social networks work smoothly, you need to make a comprehensive setup, you have to change the battery settings, allow auto-starts, and set specific access rights for each important application, and this approach ensures that you do not miss an important message.
In this guide, we will take a look at all the hidden menus and settings that are responsible for delivering push notifications, and we will look at both standard methods through the interface and deeper system settings, which will help you fully control the information flow on your device.
Global setting of the notification and sound center
Before you set each application separately, you need to make sure that the global settings of the system do not block notifications entirely. Often users accidentally activate the "Do Not Disturb" or "Silent Mode" modes, which block all sounds. Check the top curtain of the screen and make sure that there is no activation of the icon of the moon or crossed-out speaker.
Go to the basic settings of your smartphone via Settings β Sound and vibration. This is the notification volume slider that should be raised to a comfortable level. Also, pay attention to the Vibration section, because in noisy places it is the tactile response that helps you notice the incoming event.
It is important to check the settings of the notification center itself. In newer versions of the shell, the interface may differ, but the path usually lies through Settings β Notifications and the status bar. Here you can choose the display style (classic or new) and make sure that the display of icons on the application icons is enabled.
- π Make sure that media volume sliders and notifications are not at a minimum.
- π Make sure the Do Not Disturb mode is turned off or configured correctly.
- π± Enable the display of icons on app icons for visual control.
Remember that system sounds can be turned off in audio profiles, and if you use third-party themes, they can also conflict with standard sound schemes, in which case it is recommended to temporarily return the standard theme for verification.
Managing Auto Start and Application Background
The most common reason Xiaomi doesn't have notifications is because it doesn't have background activity, because it considers inactive apps "junk" and shuts down their processes to save power, and to fix that, you have to find the app on the installed list and change its behavior.
Open the Security app (green zipper icon) that is preinstalled on all the brand devices. Find the Permissions and select AutoRun. In the list that opens, find the messengers you want (WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber) and activate the switch in front of them, which will allow the program to run with the system.
β οΈ Warning: Enabling auto-runs for dozens of applications can significantly reduce the battery life of the device. Only allow this feature for programs whose notifications are critical to you.
Once you have enabled autorun, you need to set the permissions for each application individually. Go to Settings β Applications β All applications, select the desired messenger and find the Other permissions option. You need to allow notifications to be displayed on the wonka and lock screen, as well as access to contacts and microphone, if necessary for work.
You should pay special attention to setting up the battery for each application. In the settings menu of a particular application, find the option "Saving battery power." By default, there may be a restriction there. You need to select the option "No restrictions. This system does not "kill" the application process, even if it is not in use for a long time.
Set up notifications for specific applications
Android and MIUI allow you to flexibly configure notification types for each service, you can allow audio signals for personal chats, but turn off audio for channels or newsletters, through a detailed settings menu.
Go to Settings β Notifications and Status bar β Notification management. Select the app from the list. Here you will see the Allow Notifications switch β it should be active. Below is a list of notification categories (e.g., Personal Messages, Group Chats, Calls).
You can set your options for each category. Click on the category name to reveal details. Make sure you select Sound or Vibration and have the Important Notification (or High Priority) option enabled if that option is available on your Android version.
- π Enable the βImportant Notificationβ option for priority contacts.
- π΅ Check if the restriction on display on the locked screen is worth it.
- π·οΈ Set up individual sounds for different types of events within the app.
In some cases, resetting notification settings for a particular application helps. In the app settings menu, find the Reset button (usually at the bottom of the list) that will return all permissions to factory values, after which they will need to be reconfigured, following the instructions above.

Work with the "Do Not Disturb" mode and schedule
Often users block notifications themselves, setting a schedule of silence mode, but forget about it. The smartphone can automatically switch to this mode at night or during working hours, hiding all incoming events. β Sound and vibration β Don't disturb.
Within this menu, look at the Schedule item. If it's active, click on it and check the time slots. There's probably a no-sound rule right now. It's also worth checking the "Repeat Events" settings, which may include silence on certain days of the week.
An important parameter is the exception list. Even if the Do Not Disturb mode is active, you can allow notifications from selected contacts or re-calls. Find the Exclusions and set up who can reach you even quietly.
| Parameter | Description | Recommended value |
|---|---|---|
| System sound | Loudness of systemic events | Medium or High. |
| Vibration on touch | Tactile response of the interface | If you wish, |
| The sound of lockdown | Screen activation signal | Switched off (for silence) |
| The sound of notifications | Primary message signal | Maximum |
Don't confuse Do Not Disturb with the usual silent mode. The first hides visual notifications and blocks the screen, the second only removes the sound. For a full check, try temporarily disabling all silence modes and sending yourself a test message.
System settings MIUI Optimizer and network access
At the bottom of the engineering menu, you can find settings that can globally affect network performance and notifications, such as MIUI Optimizer, which in some cases helps to solve background synchronization problems, although newer versions of Android have limited access to this menu.
To get into the extended menu, go to Settings β About Phone and quickly click 7-10 times on the MIUI Version (or OS Version) until it says βYouβre a developer.β Then go back to the main settings menu, select Advanced Settings β Developer.
Scroll down the list. Find the item Enable MIUI Optimization. If it's on, try turning it off (the phone will reboot). If it's off, turn it on. This manipulation resets some of the system limitations of background processes.
What is MIUI Optimizer?
Also on the developer menu, check the background process settings, and find the background process limit section and make sure it has a "Standard Limit" value. If you select "No background processes," the notifications won't work.
Another important aspect is network access. The Security app has a data transfer section. Make sure that important applications are allowed to use both Wi-Fi and Mobile Internet, and sometimes the system blocks data transmission in the background to save traffic.
Problems with Google services and third-party launchers
Notifications in Android are tied to the work of Google Play services. If Google services are updated with an error or their operation is limited, notifications can arrive with a delay to all applications at once. Go to Settings β Apps β All applications, find Google Play Services and click Clear Cache.
Using third-party launchers (Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher) can also affect the display of message counters (badges). In the settings of the launcher itself, you need to find the section "Notification Signs" and turn them on. POCO system launcher or standard MIUI usually works more stable.
If you use third-party memory cleanup applications (Clean Master and analogues), they can aggressively shut down instant messenger processes, and it is recommended to remove such programs or add messengers to their whitelist.
β οΈ Attention: Installing "heavy" design themes or widgets from unknown developers can lead to unstable system operation and loss of notifications. Use only proven themes from the official store.
π‘
If notifications are missing after the system update, try removing the βSecurityβ and βXiaomi Servicesβ app updates through the app menu, then updating them again through GetApps or Play Market.
In rare cases, removing and re-installing a problematic application helps, so when reinstalling, request all the necessary permissions, and this is guaranteed to reset any internal configuration errors of a particular application.
Additional methods and resetting settings
If none of the above methods worked, maybe the problem is a system failure. Try resetting your network settings. This won't delete your personal data (photos, contacts), but will return your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile settings to factory values.
Path to reset: Settings β Connection and Sharing β Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth. After this procedure, the phone will reboot, and you will have to re-enter passwords from Wi-Fi networks.
As a last resort, if the problem is observed in all applications and is of a systemic nature, you may need to completely reset your device (Factory Reset).
- π Resetting network settings often solves problems with "sticking" communication modules.
- πΎ Backup is mandatory before a complete reset of the device.
- π οΈ Checking system updates may contain corrections to notification bugs.
Keep an eye out for shell updates. Xiaomi engineers regularly release patches to fix bugs in the background services. You can check for updates in Settings β About the phone.

A comprehensive approach, including autostart, battery and system permissions, solves the problem of missing notifications in 99% of cases.
