Dark mode on smartphones Xiaomi Redmi not only changes the design of the interface β it reduces the load on the eyes, saves battery power (on the Internet). AMOLED-It's a little bit more convenient in the evening, but despite its apparent simplicity, many users are facing problems: the activation button is hidden in the depths of the phone. MIUI, Some models (Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi 12) do not have the dark theme applied to individual applications. This article covers all the current ways to enable (including hidden), solutions of typical bugs and life hacks for fine-tuning.
We tested the instructions on the Redmi Note. 11/12/13, Redmi 10/10A redmi K50 firmware MIUI 13/14 HyperOS 1.0. If your model is older 2020 years (e.g. Redmi) 8 note 9S), Some of the functions may not be available, and they have a separate section with alternative methods. POCO (based on Redmi, they have given some nuances to FAQ.
1. Standard method: via MIUI/HyperOS settings
This is the basic method that works on 90% of Xiaomi Redmi devices (except the oldest models on MIUI 11 and below). The algorithm is the same for all firmware versions, but the path in the menu may vary slightly.
Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen) and follow the steps:
- MIUI 14/HyperOS: Go to Settings β Screen β Dark Mode
- MIUI 12/13: The Path will be Settings β Display β Dark Theme
- Activate the switch at the top of the screen. If the option is gray, then automatic switching on schedule (more on this below).
Once activated, the system interface, standard applications (Contacts, Messages, Browser) and some third-party programs (for example, YouTube or Telegram) will immediately switch to the dark palette. If changes do not apply, restart the phone: Redmi with 8 GB of RAM sometimes requires a forced restart for the correct operation of the themes.

If the screen becomes too dim after turning on the dark theme, check Adaptive Brightness settings in Settings β Screen. Sometimes the system automatically lowers the backlight by mistakenly taking the dark background for the night.
2. Automatic switching according to schedule or time of day
The feature to automatically turn on dark theme on schedule or depending on sunset/dawn is available on all Redmis with MIUI 12 and later, which is convenient if you do not want to manually activate the mode every evening.
To set up automatic switching:
- Open the Settings β Screen β Dark Mode.
- Slip on the Schedule line (or Automatically on HyperOS).
- Choose one of the options: π Sunset/dawn time β mode is enabled based on location data (access to geodata required). β° Schedule β set a fixed time (for example, from 21:00 to 7:00). π Never - Turns off automatic switching.
On Redmi with HyperOS, an additional option Adaptive Dark Mode appeared - it smoothly adjusts the level of dimming depending on the lighting (works only on models with an ambient light sensor, for example, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+).

3. Dark topic for individual applications: why it doesnβt work and how to fix it
Even after the system level dark mode is turned on, some applications may remain light, for three reasons:
- The app does not support dark theme (such as some banking programs or old games).
- Configure the dark mode inside the application (in Telegram, VK or Chrome you need to turn on separately).
- Firmware bug (often found on Redmi with custom firmware or MIUI beta versions).
Solutions for each situation:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| App stays light | No support for the dark topic | Use Forced Darkening (see Section 4) or update the app |
| Dark theme is included, but with bugs (strips, artifacts) | Conflict with the MIUI shell | Clear the app cache in Settings β Apps |
| Dark mode only works on some menus. | Setup within the application | Go to the app settings and activate the dark theme there. |
| After the MIUI update, the dark theme reset | Resetting system settings | Turn on the mode again and restart the phone |
For Google apps (like YouTube or Google Play Store), dark theme may depend on your Google account settings. Check them out at myaccount.google.com under Personalization β Dark Mode.

4. Forced dark theme inclusion for all applications (hidden function)
If the app doesnβt support dark mode but you want to darken it, MIUI and HyperOS have a hidden option of forced dimming that doesnβt work perfectly (it can spoil colors or make text unreadable), but in some cases it does save.
You can activate it like this:
- Open the Settings. β Special facilities.
- Scroll down and select the Color Corrector (or HyperOS Color Correction).
- Activate the switch and select Color Inversion or Gray Shades.
- Return to Special Options and turn on Special Opportunity Shortcuts β this will add a button to the notification bar for quick on/off.
β οΈ Note: This method can make some interface elements unreadable (e.g. white text on a light background) Test it on unnecessary applications before active use.
HyperOS has a more advanced option called Forced Dark Mode in developers, to activate it:
- Turn on Developer Mode (7 times tap the MIUI version in Settings β About Phone).
- Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
- Find the option Forced Dark Mode and turn it on.
Solutions for each of the problems:
| Problem. | Reason. | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Blinking screen | HyperOS Animation Conflict | Turn off animation in Settings β Special Options β Delete animation |
| The mode is turned off after restarting | The system's cache bug | Clear the cache in Settings β Memory β Clean and restart the phone |
| The notification panel is not darkened | Transparency setting | Enable background blur in Settings β Screen β More |
| Increased battery consumption | Bug with HyperOS optimization | Turn off Adaptive Brightness and set a fixed value |
If problems persist, try resetting the screen settings:
- Go to Settings β Screen β More.
- Slip on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Reset settings.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
