Xiaomi's initial activation is usually easy, as the company's engineers have come up with an intuitive interface for beginners, and just hold the power key for a few seconds until the Mi or Redmi logo appears on the display. However, in real-world use, users often face situations where the standard algorithm of actions does not work and the device remains a black screen.
The reasons for this behavior can be banal, for example, deep battery discharge after a long downtime, or more serious, associated with a software failure of the MIUI or HyperOS system. In this article, we will discuss in detail all possible launch scenarios, from a cold start to a forced reboot and enter into recovery mode.
It is important to understand that the hardware power button can react differently depending on the current battery state and the firmware version. If your device does not respond to usual actions, do not panic - in 90% of cases, the problem can be solved independently without going to the service center.
The initial launch of a new smartphone
When you unpack a new Xiaomi, the first thing to do is to provide power. Modern lithium-polymer batteries often come from the factory with minimal storage charge, so immediately after being removed from the box, the phone may not respond to the button. Connect the original cable to the USB Type-C port and power adapter, leaving the device for 15-20 minutes.
Once the charging indicator lights up, press and hold the power button located on the right side of the case. In some models, especially in the Redmi Note and Poco series, the button can be combined with a fingerprint scanner.

When you first turn on the new Xiaomi, be sure to wait for the logo to appear before releasing the power button, otherwise the system may not count the start command.
If the screen is on fire but the device is stuck on the logo, it may indicate that you need to adjust the components initially or upgrade them. In normal mode, you will see a welcome window with a choice of language.

You'll need to leave your smartphone on charge for at least 30 to 40 minutes, even if the screen doesn't show anything. Sometimes the charging indicator may flash red, signaling a critically low energy level, and only after you've set up enough charge, the system will allow you to make a cold start.

If after an hour of charging the phone still does not respond, try changing the cable or power supply. A faulty wire often causes the current to simply not reach the battery. Also check the smartphone connector for dust and pile, which can interfere with contact.

In rare cases, a key combination to force a reboot helps, even if the device seems to be off. Press the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for 15-20 seconds. This command can push the power controller apart.
Forced reset and hardware reset
When the Android operating system or MIUI shell freezes, a standard shutdown becomes impossible, and in such cases, a forced reboot method is used, which is similar to pulling the battery out in old phones, and is data-safe if it is performed once.
To perform this procedure on most Xiaomi and Redmi models, you need to press the power button and hold it for 10-15 seconds. The device must vibrate and show the brand logo. If this does not work, try the combination of Volume Down + Power.
There is also a Recovery mode that allows you to perform a deeper reset, which requires you to turn off your phone (if it turns on) and pinch Volume Up + Power, and in the menu that appears, you can select the Wipe Data option, but this will result in the complete deletion of all files.

Diagnostics of screen and button problems
Sometimes the phone turns on, makes notifications or vibrations, but the screen stays black, which may indicate a malfunction in the display matrix or the plume, and to check if the phone is working, try calling it from another number or plugging it into your computer — if the PC is making a USB connection sound, then the device is functioning.
The problem may be a stuck power button, where if the button is mechanically damaged or moisture is trapped, it may not close the contact, and in such cases, careful repeated pressing or a slight tapping on the edge of the button to restore contact helps.
How to check the screen without an image?
If you have the opportunity, connect your smartphone to a TV or monitor via a USB-C to HDMI adapter. If the image appears on an external display, then the problem is solely in the smartphone matrix, not in the motherboard.
It is important to distinguish between a software black screen of death and a physical breakdown: If the screen stops working after a fall or water hit, the software methods are likely to be useless and hardware repairs will be required.
Enter Recovery and Hard Reset mode
If the system is damaged so much that the phone only turns on before the logo and shuts down again (bootloop), a complete data reset may be required.Recovery mode allows you to roll the system back to factory settings, removing all user data.
To enter this menu, turn off your phone completely. Then simultaneously press the Volume Up and Power buttons. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then release the power button, but keep the volume down until the Recovery menu appears. From the Recovery menu, select a language (usually English), then go to Wipe Data and confirm the action of Wipe All Data. Once the process is complete, select Reboot to restart. The first start after the reset can take up to 10 minutes.

Fastboot and Mi Flash Tool
When a software failure is critical and Recovery doesn’t help, the only way to revive Xiaomi is to flash it, USB-cable and official firmware in.tgz (not.zip) mode Fastboot allows you to download a new system image directly into memory.
Download the Mi Flash Tool utility from the official website and install ADB/Fastboot drivers. Unpack the archive with the firmware in the root of the C disk so that the path to the folder is short and without Cyrillic. Connect the phone turned off in Fastboot mode (clamping Volume Down + Power) to the PC.
