Why the keyboard lighting on RedmiBook doesnβt work and how to fix it
Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro Series Laptops (including 14 Pro, 15 Pro and 16 Pro models) RGB-It's a keyboard light that not only adds style, but also makes it easier to work at night, but many users are faced with the problem that the backlight either doesn't turn on at all or doesn't work correctly -- blinks, changes colors arbitrarily, or shuts down after a few seconds. The reasons can be different: from banal (disabled function in the BIOS) before technical (driver failure or firmware failure).
In this article, we will discuss all the official and alternative ways to turn on the backlight on RedmiBook, and also explain how to fix typical problems. It is important to understand that the activation algorithm depends on the model of the laptop and the version of MIUI for the PC (yes, Xiaomi laptops use a modified firmware similar to smartphones). If you just bought a device or upgraded the system, chances are that the backlight is simply disabled by default.
Before you go to the instructions, check two key points:
- π Make sure your laptop is connected to the network. On some models, the backlight automatically turns off when you're running from the battery to save charge.
- π Restart the device. Sometimes the backlight failure is fixed by a simple reboot, especially after the system update.
Method 1: Hot keys for quick control of backlighting
The easiest way to turn backlight on or off is to use a keyboard combination. On most RedmiBook Pro models, the combination of Fn + Space is responsible for this. When you first press the backlight will turn on at minimum brightness with white color, repeated presses will cyclically change modes:
- π Level 1: Minimum brightness (white).
- π Level 2: Average brightness (white).
- βοΈ Level 3: Maximum brightness (white).
- π¨ Rainbow mode: smooth change of colors of the rainbow.
- β« Switched off: backlight deactivated.
If the combination of Fn + Space does not work, try alternatives:
- π Fn + F3 phn + F4 β In some models, these keys are responsible for lighting.
- π Hold Fn for 2-3 seconds before pressing Space β sometimes helps with the βstickingβ function.
β οΈ Note: RedmiBook Air laptops (without the Pro) don't have a physical backlight!
Make sure the Fn key is not locked (click Fn + Esc)
Try pressing Fn + Space with 2 seconds hold
Check if the Fn indicator is on (if any)
Restart your laptop and try again.-->
Method 2: Configure the backlight with MIUI Control Center
MIUI for PCs on Xiaomi laptops includes a special control center where you can flexibly adjust the keyboard backlight.
- Click on the Control Center icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar (near the clock). Alternatively, use the Win + A combination.
- In the menu that opens, find the tab "Lighting of the keyboard" (icon with keyboard and light bulb).
- Activate the "Lighten the Light" slider.
- Set up the parameters: ποΈ Brightness - from 10% before 100%. π¨ Color β select from the palette or activate the Rainbow mode". β±οΈ Timer β Automatic shutdown through 5/10/30 minute or never.
If there's no backlight tab, either the backlight driver isn't installed or your model doesn't support this function, so move on to the next one.
| Parameter | Default value | Recommended value |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 50% | 70-80% (optimum for the eyes) |
| Colour | White | Blue or green (less fatigued eyes) |
| Rainbow mode. | Off. | Included (for dynamic effect) |
| Timer of shutdown | 10 minutes. | Never (if you work long hours) |

If the backlight turns on but goes off, check the power saving settings at MIUI Control Center. Battery Savings mode may be activated, which turns off the backlight after 30 seconds of inactivity.
Method 3: Activate backlighting via BIOS (for advanced users)

- Turn off the laptop.
- Press and hold the F2 key, then turn on the power (Power button).
- In the BIOS menu, go to the Advanced tab β Keyboard Backlight.

Method 4: Update the backlight drivers via Xiaomi PC Suite

|---|---|---|
| The lighting flashes with an interval of 1-2 seconds | Driver conflict or keyboard firmware failure | Update the driver via Xiaomi PC Suite or reset the BIOS |

Critical information: On 2020 RedmiBook laptops (without the Pro series), the keyboard backlight is implemented through a separate controller that can fail when overheating. If none of these methods helped, and the laptop often heats up, contact the service for the diagnosis of the motherboard.
