Why the Redmi 9 Keyboard May Not Work and How to Fix It
The keyboard on Xiaomi Redmi 9 is not just a typing tool, but a key element of interaction with the device. Without it, you can not send messages, search for information or even enter passwords. However, many users face a situation where the keyboard suddenly disappears, does not open or works with errors. The reasons can be different from accidental disconnection in settings to system failures after the MIUI update.
In this article, we will look at all the possible ways to turn on the Redmi 9 keyboard, including standard methods and alternative solutions for complex cases. We will focus on the typical errors that users make when setting up, and give recommendations for preventing problems in the future. If you find that the keyboard does not appear when you click on the input field, do not panic: in 90% of cases, the problem is solved in 2-3 minutes.
Itβs important to consider that Redmi 9 came with different firmware versions (MIUI 11, MIUI 12, MIUI 13, and MIUI 14), and the settings interface may be slightly different. Weβll give you general instructions that are relevant to all versions, and also point out key differences. If your phone was upgrading to a new version of Android (from 10 to 11 or 12), some menu items may have swapped places β weβll talk about this too.
Method 1: Standard keyboard inclusion through settings
The most obvious and quick way to get the keyboard back is to check its activation in the system settings, and users often accidentally turn it off in an attempt to make room or optimize the phone's performance.
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen or in the application menu).
- Go to Additional Settings β Language and Enter (in some versions of MIUI, the path may be Settings β System and Device β Language and Input).
- Slip on the current keyboard (or keyboard management).
- Make sure that there's a tick next to the Gboard or the Xiaomi Keyboard. If not, turn it on.
- Go back and select the desired keyboard in the default Keyboard section.
If there is nothing in the list of available keyboards, then the keyboard application has been removed or disabled, in which case, move on to Method 3, where we will tell you how to restore the system keyboard.
β οΈ Attention: Redmi 9 with firmware MIUI 14 (Android 12+) The path to keyboard settings may be different: Settings β System system β Language and input β Virtual keyboard. If you can't find a section, search by settings (the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner).
Restart your phone (sometimes the keyboard freezes after the update)
Make sure the input field is active (slip on it - the cursor should flash)
Check if Do Not Disturb or Saving Charge is enabled (they can block pop-ups)
Turn it off. VPN (Sometimes it interferes with the work of system services)-->
Method 2: Quickly turn on through the notification panel
If the keyboard suddenly disappears while typing, you don't have to go into the settings. MIUI has a quick way to change the keyboard right from the notification bar. Here's how to do it:
- Open any application where you want to enter text (such as Messages or Notes).
- Slip the input field to make the cursor appear (even if the keyboard doesnβt pop up).
- Swipe your finger down to open the notification panel.
- Find the keyboard icon (usually an icon with the letter "A" or emoji) and hold it for 1-2 seconds.
- In the window that appears, select the desired keyboard (for example, Gboard or Xiaomi Keyboard).
This method works even if the keyboard has been disabled in the settings, but not deleted. If the keyboard icon in the notification panel is not, then the keyboard application is deactivated or deleted (see Method 3).
On Redmi 9 with MIUI 13/14, the notification bar may look different: the keyboard icon is sometimes hidden under the Edit button (pencil in the lower right corner). If you can't see the icon, tap on Edit and add it manually.

Method 3: Restore the system keyboard if it is removed
If the settings don't have keyboards available, it's likely that the system application has been removed or disabled, which could have occurred after resetting, manually deleting (cleaning your phone), or crashing when updating.
Option A: Enable through application settings
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Slip on the three points in the upper right corner and select Show System Processes.
- Find the Xiaomi Keyboard (or com.miui.miuikeyboard) or Gboard (com.google.android.inputmethod.latin) in the list.
- If the application is disabled, click Enable.
- If the application is removed, go to Option B.
Option B: Reinstall the keyboard via Google Play
- πΉ If Gboard is removed: click on the link and install it again.
- πΉ If the Xiaomi Keyboard is removed: download APK from the official Xiaomi website or through GetApps (branded app store Xiaomi).
- πΉ After installation, go to Settings β Language and input and activate the keyboard (see Method 1).
β οΈ Note: On some Redmi 9 firmware (especially custom) Xiaomi system keyboard cannot be removed by standard means - it simply deactivates. If it is not in the list of applications, try resetting your phone to factory settings (Settings) β The phone. β Resetting settings).
What if the keyboard is installed but does not appear?
Method 4: Reset keyboard settings to factory
If the keyboard is working but it's not acting right (braking, not showing hints, resetting the tongue), resetting it won't remove the keyboard itself, it will only return the keyboard to "as after installation."
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find the Xiaomi or Gboard keyboard and tap it.
- Choose Warehouse.
- Click Clear Data and confirm the action.
- Reboot the phone.
Once reset, you have to reset the keyboard, pick the language, turn on auto-replacement, etc. But this often solves problems with freezes and input errors. If you use Gboard, you may need to re-authorize your Google account after reset to sync the dictionary.
On the Redmi 9 with MIUI 12+, there is an alternative reset method:
- Go to Settings β System β Additional β Resetting settings.
- Choose App Reset (not to be confused with a full phone reset!).
- Confirm the action β it will reset the settings of all applications, including the keyboard.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The keyboard does not appear when you press the input field | Application disabled or removed | Enable in the application settings or reinstall |
| The keyboard brakes or hangs | Overloaded cache or conflict with another application | Clear keyboard data or disable other keyboards |
| Auto Replacement or Tips Are Not Working | Resetting settings or disabling dictionary | Go to the keyboard settings and turn on "predicting text" |
| The keyboard changes its language | Automatic language definition is enabled | Turn off the option in the keyboard settings |
| You can't change the layout. | System keyboard removed or damaged | Reset the keyboard or reset the settings |
Method 5: Use an alternative keyboard (if the system keyboard doesn't work)
If none of these things worked, or you just don't like the standard keyboard, you can install a third-party keyboard. Redmi 9 works well.
- πΉ Gboard (from Google) β Supports gestures, real-time translation and integration with Google Search.
- πΉ SwiftKey (from Microsoft) β known for accurate word prediction and dark topics.
- πΉ Fleksy β Minimalist keyboard with advanced gesture settings.
- πΉ Chroom β keyboard with support AI custom-themed.
To install an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play (like Gboard).
- After installation, open any field to enter text.
- Swipe your finger across the notification bar and hold the keyboard icon (as in Method 2).
- In the list, select the installed keyboard and allow it to be accessed.
- Return to Settings β Language and input and install the new default keyboard.
On the Redmi 9 with MIUI 13+ firmware, some alternative keyboards may conflict with system services. If the keyboard doesn't appear after installation, try turning off battery optimization for it (Settings β Battery β Battery Optimization β Find the keyboard β Select "No Limits").
π‘
If the alternative keyboard doesnβt appear after you install it, try temporarily disabling the Xiaomi system keyboard in the application settings. Sometimes MIUI blocks third-party keyboards if the system keyboard is active.
Solving Common Keyboard Errors on Redmi 9
Even after the keyboard is successfully turned on, Redmi 9 users may face unexpected problems.
1.The keyboard appears and immediately disappears
Reason: conflict with an application that uses the permission to display over other windows (for example, antivirus, launchers or programs for recording the screen).
Decision:
- πΉ Go to Settings. β Annexes β Permits β Display over other windows.
- πΉ Disable this permission for all applications except keyboard and system services.
- πΉ Reboot the phone.
2.The switching of languages does not work.
Reason: the layout settings are lost or the language package is removed.
Decision:
- πΉ For Gboard: Go to the keyboard settings β Languages β Add the right language.
- πΉ For the Xiaomi Keyboard: Settings β Additionally. β Language and input β Virtual keyboard β Keyboard Xiaomi β Languages.
- πΉ If the language is added but not switched, clear the keyboard data (see Method 4).
3.The keyboard brakes or lags
The reason: lack of RAM or overloaded cache.
Decision:
- πΉ Clear the keyboard cache in the app settings.
- πΉ Turn off animation in the developer settings (Settings) β The phone. β Version. MIUI (tap 7 times) β Developer settings β The scale of window animation β Choose No Animation).
- πΉ Remove unnecessary themes or keyboard skins (they can take up a lot of resources).
π‘
If the keyboard started to brake after the MIUI update, try rolling back the firmware or waiting for the next patch. Often, text-entry bugs are fixed in minor updates.
