Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones often face a situation where, after a system update or accidental configuration failure, the standard app icon on the desktop disappears. Especially critical if the message label is missing, since this is the main communication channel. The MIUI or HyperOS shell has a complex structure that can hide standard interface elements from the user, creating the illusion of completely removing them.
Fortunately, the Messages system application is an integral part of the Android operating system and cannot be removed by standard methods without special permissions. In most cases, the shortcut is simply hidden, moved to a folder or disabled in the launcher settings. It takes only a few minutes to restore access to the SMS, if you know where to look for the missing item.
This article provides a comprehensive guide to returning an icon to its place, and we’ll look at methods ranging from simple folder checks to resetting launcher settings to ensure you’re able to fix the problem. Follow the instructions consistently to avoid unnecessary confusion in your device’s file system.
Check folders and second desktop
The most common but often overlooked reason for the shortcut to disappear is because it was accidentally moved: In a rush or when cleaning the desktop, users often drag icons to other areas of the screen or hide them inside folders with other applications. MIUI automatically groupes similar applications, so Messages could end up in the Google, Tools or Communication folder.
Carefully look at all the pages of the desktop, swiping left and right. Be sure to check folders whose names may not match the content. Often, the message shortcut on Xiaomi is hidden in the folder with the browser or navigator if they are located next to you when sorting alphabetically.
⚠️ Note: If you use a third-party theme, folders may look non-standard or have clear borders, which complicates visual search.
Also check for the second page of the desktop. Sometimes when you update the system, shortcuts may shift to additional screens that you rarely use. Tweak with two fingers across the screen to see thumbnails of all desktops and check their contents.
Search for applications through global search
If visual search didn’t produce results, you need to make sure that the application is actually installed and hasn’t been disabled. The built-in search function in Xiaomi allows you to find any application, even if it’s not on the desktop.
Type the word "Messages" or "SMS" into the search box. If the system finds an application, it will show up in the results with the corresponding icon. By clicking on it, you can launch the application, which will confirm that the program works, but its shortcut is simply not on the home page.
💡
Use Google Assistant or Xiao AI voice search by saying “Open Messages” to quickly check the app’s health without manually entering text.
If the search results, but nothing happens when you start, or if there is an error, the application data may be corrupted, and if that happens, you will need to clear the cache through the settings, which will be discussed in the next sections, Global Search is the fastest way to localize the problem.
Recovery through launcher settings
The launcher is the component of the system that displays the desktop and icons. In Redmi and Xiaomi smartphones, the System Launcher app is responsible for this. Sometimes its settings get confused and it stops displaying certain shortcuts. To fix this, you need to go to the phone's settings menu.
Find the Applications → All Apps section. You should find System Launcher (or just Louncher) in the list. Click on it and select Clean. Here, you should choose Clean (or Reset) rather than Delete, since you cannot remove the system component without root rights.
☑️ Resetting launcher settings
Once the launcher's settings are cleared, the desktop can blink or reboot for a second, and all the shortcuts will go back to the factory location settings, and it won't delete your personal files or contacts, but it will restore the standard grid of applications, including the missing SMS.
Check hidden applications and “No Sound” mode
There is an app hide feature in MIUI that allows you to hide icons from prying eyes, perhaps the message label was hidden accidentally or by another user, and to check, you need to open the Security app (green zipper icon), which is preinstalled on all devices of the brand.
Inside the app, find the Hidden Apps tool. The system will ask you to enter a password or fingerprint if the feature has been activated before. In the hidden app list, check if the tick is next to Message. If it is, just remove it and the shortcut will return to the desktop.
| Action. | The way is on the menu | The result |
|---|---|---|
| Checking the hidden | Security → Hidden applications | Return of the label from the hidden list |
| Launcher reset | Settings → Applications → Launcher | Restore the desktop grid |
| Searching the system | Search (swipe down) | Localization of the installed application |
It’s also worth checking if Do Not Disturb mode or specific profiles are enabled that can mask notification icons, even though they don’t usually hide the app’s shortcut. Make sure that the notification settings for the Messages app have permission to display icons.
Removal of system application updates
Sometimes the problem is that the Messages app itself is misrepresented, and after an update from Google Play or through GetApps, the app may not work properly or hide its label, in which case a factory-built rollback is effective.
Go to Settings → Applications → All Apps. Find Messages in the list. Click on the three dots in the top right corner (or the "More" button) and select "Delete Updates" and the system will warn that this will return the app to the original version.
What happens when you delete updates?
After the updates are removed, the phone may suggest updating the app again. For now, refrain from doing so and check if the shortcut appears. If the problem is solved, then the latest version was buggy. You can continue using the old version or wait for the developer to fix it.
Resetting settings through Safe Mode
If none of the above methods worked, it is possible that the conflict is caused by a third-party application that you recently installed.
To enter Safe Mode, press the power button. When the off menu appears, press and hold your finger on "Stop" (or "Reset" depending on the version of MIUI) until you prompt to go to Safe Mode. Confirm the action.
If the message shortcut is in safe mode, it means that the problem is in third-party software. Remember what applications you installed recently (launchers, weather widgets, memory cleaners) and delete them. After rebooting in normal mode, the shortcut should remain.
⚠️ Attention: In Safe Mode, some phone features may not work properly and the screens may be black at the edges. This is normal.
Radical measures: complete resetting of settings
When a software failure is deep and affects system configuration files, a full Hard Reset may be required, an extreme measure to be taken if a missing message label blocks normal phone use and other methods have failed.
Before performing this procedure, be sure to back up all important data (photos, contacts, documents) to the Mi Cloud cloud service or computer.
Settings → About the phone → Reset settings → Erase all dataOnce reset, the phone will go back to the "out of the box" state, a message label guaranteed to appear on the desktop, as the system will be clean, and it's also a great opportunity to get rid of accumulated system debris.
💡
A full reset is a 100% way to get all the shortcuts back, but it takes time to reset the phone and install apps.
