Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face a situation where the usual digital watch suddenly disappears from the home screen. This can happen after a system update, accidentally delete or reset the launcher settings. The absence of a time widget is disorienting, as we are used to seeing it immediately when unlocking the device.
There are a number of ways to get time back to your desktop, and none of them require complex manipulation of superuser rights. In this article, we'll look at all the current methods for MIUI shells and the new HyperOS. You'll learn not only to restore a standard widget, but also to customize its appearance.
Sometimes the problem is not the removal, but the failure of the system application "Security" or launcher, so if simple actions do not help, we will consider deeper settings. standard watch widget in Xiaomi is rigidly tied to the system application “Clock”, and its removal through the application manager is impossible without ADB-team.
Find and add a widget through the menu
The most obvious and often ignored way is to check the standard widget menu. MIUI They're accessed by pressing a blank area of the screen for a long time or pinching two fingers, and they're hiding all the elements that are available, including those that may have been accidentally removed.
Once you enter the desktop editing mode, you need to find the Widget button (usually at the bottom of the screen). In the list that opens, you should scroll to the Watch section. There can be several variations: analog, digital, with or without a calendar. Choose the desired option and drag it to the vacant place.
If the widget is not added or disappears immediately, there may be a lack of free space on the screen. Xiaomi's system requires contiguous (adjacent) cells to accommodate large widgets. Free up space by moving the application icons, and try again.
In some cases, the standard widget may be hidden by the theme settings. If you use a third-party theme, it may block the display of system elements. Try temporarily switching to the standard theme "Classic" in the Themes menu to see if the widget appears.
Setting up the display time in the “In pocket” mode
Many users confuse the desktop widget with the Folding mode, which shows the time on a locked screen or when you flip a smartphone. If your goal is to configure the display of time in a curled state, the path will be different.
To activate this function, go to Settings → Lock screen. You need to find Mode in your pocket or Screen in your pocket. Make sure the switch is activated. This is where you set the time style when the phone is down or in a window case.
Inside the style setting menu, you can choose the format of numbers, the presence of seconds, and even animation. Note that some advanced styles require AOD (Always On Display), which is not available on all Xiaomi models. On budget devices, the functionality can be limited to a simple black screen with white numerals.
Why isn't time in your pocket working?
It's worth noting that the In-pocket settings don't affect desktop widgets. These are two independent modules of the system. If you're missing time on the home screen, going back to the In-pocket settings won't help, you need to act through the widget menu, as described in the first section.
Use of the “Clock” and “Security” app
The central element of time management in the Xiaomi ecosystem is the Clock system app, which is responsible for alarm clocks, timers and, importantly for us, widgets, and sometimes a failure happens inside the app itself, and it reboots the problem.
Try clearing the Cache of the Clock app. To do this, go to Settings → Apps → All Apps → Watch. In the menu that opens, select “Clean” and then “Clear Cache.” Don’t confuse it with “Clean All” as this can reset your set alarm clocks.
Also worth checking is the Security app permissions. In MIUI, this component is deeply integrated into the system and controls many background processes. If it doesn't have the necessary rights to autorun or run in the background, the widget may not update or disappear after the reboot.
☑️ Diagnostics of system applications
In rare cases, reinstall system component updates helps. Go to the System Component Update menu (through a search in the Settings or Security app) and check for updates for Desktop, Clock and System Launcher modules. Installing the latest versions often fixes compatibility bugs.
Solving problems with launcher and theme of design
Often the cause of the disappearance of the watch is a conflict of the current theme design with the launcher version. Third-party themes downloaded from the MIUI Themes store may contain errors in the widget code. If the problem occurs immediately after the change of the theme, go back to the standard design.
To reset the theme, go to the Themes app, click on the profile icon and select My Themes. Activate the Classic or Defult theme. After applying the standard theme, the watch widget should return to its place if it has not been removed by the user.
If you use a third-party launcher (like Nova Launcher or Lawnchair), standard MIUI widgets may not work properly, and in such cases, it is recommended to use widgets built into the launcher itself, or install Google Clock Widget, which is compatible with most Android shells.
⚠️ Note: When you reset the launcher to the factory settings (via the app menu), all icons and widgets on the desktops will be reset to the original state. Make sure you remember the location of important folders in advance, or take a screenshot of the screen.
There is also a hidden "Accelerate" feature in the Security app that can shut down the launcher process as it's considered heavy. Add the launcher to the battery optimization exceptions so the system doesn't "kill" the widget rendering process.
Alternative widgets from Google and third-party sources
If Xiaomi’s standard watch doesn’t work or doesn’t work, there’s always a great alternative: Google widgets. They’re lightweight, functional, and guaranteed to work on any version of Android. To add them to your desktop, select “Widgets” and find the “Widgets” section (with the Google logo).
Google offers several styles: digital, analog, weather and no. They automatically sync with network time and do not require additional permissions, and this is the perfect solution for those who want minimalism and stability.
For customizers, the Play Market offers thousands of third-party widgets, popular options include HD Widgets, Overdrop or Chronus, which allow you to change fonts, colors, backgrounds, and even add animations, turning the desktop into a unique space.
| Type of widget | RAM consumption | Network dependency | Style. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard MIUI | Low. | Only for the weather. | Systemic |
| Google Watch | Minimum | Auto: synchronization | Material Design |
| Third-party (severe) | High. | Constantly. | Castomy |
| Theme widgets | Average. | Depends on the topic. | Thematic |
When installing heavy third-party widgets, remember to consume battery. Animated clock with a second hand can prevent the screen from going into deep sleep mode, which will speed up the discharge of the device during the day.
Resetting and extreme measures
If none of the methods helped to return the clock to the desktop, there may have been a deep system failure of the launcher configuration files, in which case resetting the desktop settings to the factory will help, this will not delete your personal data (photos, contacts), but will return the location of the icons to the original appearance.
You can reset through the app menu: find Settings, go to Apps, select All Apps, search the Desktop (or System Launcher) list. Inside, click Clear → Clear Everything. After that, the phone will reboot and the desktop will be as new.
💡
Before a full launcher reset, take screenshots of the location of your folders and widgets to quickly restore the usual desktop structure.
In the rarest cases where the problem is software-based at the firmware level, it can help to update the system to the latest available version. Check for updates in the Settings menu → About the phone. Often security patches contain patches for system interface bugs.
⚠️ Warning: Resetting the launcher settings will delete all folders you created on the desktop and remove added widgets. App icons will remain on the menu, but their order on the home screen will be reset.
If that didn’t work, consider installing a third-party launcher that completely replaces the standard shell, a radical but effective step for older devices where a standard MIUI launcher may not work as well.
💡
In 95% of cases, the problem is solved by simply adding a widget through the editing menu or changing the theme to a standard one.
