Smartphone owners often want to personalize their workspace by turning a standard screen into an informative control panel. One of the most popular and functional interface elements is the weather widget, which allows you to instantly assess the current situation outside the window without opening unnecessary applications. In the ecosystem of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO, this element is implemented in a deeply integrated way, but its configuration has a number of nuances, especially after upgrading to MIUI 14 or the new HyperOS.
Many users find that the standard widget looks boring or, on the contrary, stops displaying data after a change in region. Sometimes it is necessary to replace the standard application with a more advanced one, for example, from Google or third-party developers. Understanding how the widget system in the MIUI shell works will help you not only beautifully design the screen, but also ensure stable operation of the background processes responsible for updating weather data.
In this article, we will take a look at all the ways to install and customize weather widgets, how to activate hidden features, change the style of displaying temperature, and what to do if the widget stops working, and we will look at both standard system tools and the capabilities of third-party launchers that allow you to go beyond the standard design.
Activation of the standard weather widget through the editing menu
The easiest and most reliable way to add weather information to your desktop is to use the built-in tools of the system. Xiaomi’s shell provides a powerful editor that allows you to add, remove and move interface elements. First, you need to unlock the device and go to the main screen where you want to place the widget.
Push two fingers across the screen, or press and hold your finger in a free space until the edit menu opens. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a toolbar where you'll select the Widgets, and that's where you store a library of all the system elements available, including clocks, calendars, and of course, weather.
In the list that opens, find a weather-related category. Depending on the firmware version, it can be simply called "Weather" or have the Mi Weather app logo. The system will offer several options, from minimalist numbers to large animated blocks with a forecast for the week. Choose the appropriate size and style, then drag it to the free area of the screen.
⚠️ Warning: If after dragging and drop the widget displays an error or a dash instead of a temperature, check the Internet connection. GPS Data upload requires a stable connection to the server.
Once you put the element on the screen, you can zoom it in. Pull over the edges of the widget to resize it if the template you choose supports it. This is especially convenient for the larger Redmi Note or Xiaomi Mix screens, where it's important to distribute the space correctly.
☑️ Verification of widget installation
Display setting and city selection
Once the widget is successfully installed, it is critical to set the widget correctly. By default, the system often determines the location automatically, but in dense urban areas or when using a VPN, geolocation may not work correctly. To change the city manually, click on the widget itself to open the full application, or press it and select Settings.
You can add a few locations to the city management menu, and this is for people who are following the weather in their hometown while on a business trip, or who are planning a trip. + And you can type in the name of the locality you want, and you can then have a database of options where you can select a particular neighborhood or airport.
To switch between cities on the widget itself, it is often enough to simply swipe left or right right right across the item on the desktop. If this feature is not active, check the animation and style settings in the widget menu itself. Some Themes themes can block swipes, fixing the mapping of only one city.
- 🌡️ Measurement units: In the Weather app settings, you can switch the scale from Celsius to Fahrenheit, which can be useful for users accustomed to the American system.
- 🕒 Update frequency: In the Data Update section, select the interval. The best option is “Every hour” or “Automatically”, so that the battery is not wasted on a constant server survey.
- 📍 precision GPS: For maximum accuracy, it is recommended to enable the use of satellites in location settings, not just the determination over Wi-Fi networks.
It's important to note that the weather widget is closely related to the system clock, and often it's combined into one interface module, so by changing the settings of one element, you can inadvertently affect another, for example, changing the time format in the weather widget may require the launcher to restart to apply the changes.

Design changes through MIUI Theme Store
The standard look of widgets can get boring quickly, but Xiaomi’s ecosystem offers a powerful solution through the Theme app. It’s not just a wallpaper change, but a complete interface transformation, including icons, sounds and, importantly for us, weather and watch widgets.
To find custom design, open the Themes app and go to Widgets or search for Weather, Weather or Clock. Here are thousands of options created by both official designers and the community. You can find futuristic neon widgets, minimalistic black blocks for AMOLED screens, or animated scenes with rain and snow.
After downloading and applying the theme, the new widget will automatically replace the old one on the desktop. However, be careful: some third-party themes can only change icons, leaving system widgets unchanged. The theme description usually indicates whether it contains custom widgets (Custom Widgets).
| Type of widget | Impact on the battery | Difficulty setting up | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| System (Standard) | Low. | Minimum | Built-in by default |
| Thematic (MIUI) | Average. | Low. | Tham's shop |
| Google Weather | Average. | Medium | Through the Google app |
| Third-party (Today Weather) | High (depending on the widget) | Tall. | Google Play Store |
When you install heavy graphics themes with live animations on widgets, power consumption can increase. If you use your smartphone in charge saving mode, the system can automatically disable the update of such live widgets, returning a static picture.
Use of Google widgets and third-party apps
If Xiaomi’s standard solutions don’t meet your functionality or design requirements, you can always turn to alternatives. Google’s widgets are often considered the benchmark of pure design and search engine integration. They display data more concisely and often update faster.
To install the Google widget, make sure that the phone has a Google app installed. Then, through the widget menu (plugs on the screen), search in the list of “Google” or “Weather.” Drag the item onto the screen. It automatically pulls up data from your account and search history, offering the most relevant information.
For advanced users, there are specialized apps from Google Play, such as Today Weather, Overcast or Geometric Weather, which provide widgets with incredible detail: pressure, humidity, the likelihood of rainfall by the hour, the ultraviolet index and even AQI air quality.
⚠️ Warning: When installing third-party widgets, be sure to give them permission to work in the background. In battery settings (Settings) → Annexes → All applications → [Your weather app] → Autostart) turn on the appropriate toggles, otherwise the system MIUI/HyperOS «Kill the process and the widget will stop updating.
The ability to create custom layouts through widget design applications is particularly noteworthy, allowing you to put exactly the data you want on the screen in any order, but these solutions take time to set up and can consume more CPU resources.
💡
For maximum autonomy, use widgets with an update every 30-60 minutes. Frequent updates (every minute) significantly reduces the battery life of the smartphone, especially on older Redmi models.
Solving Update and Display Problems
Despite the stability of the system, users may face problems: the widget shows yesterday’s weather, displays a city you are not in, or simply disappeared from the screen.
The first thing to do when you crash is to check your permission settings. Go to Settings → Apps → All Apps → Weather → Application Rights. Make sure you allow location access (select Always or When in use) and have access to the network. Without those permissions, the widget won't be able to get up-to-date data.
Step two is to clear the cache. Sometimes, accumulated temporary files can cause conflicts. Go to Settings → Apps → Weather → Memory and click Clear Cache. Don't worry, your city settings won't reset, only temporary data will be cleared.
- 🔄 Service reboot: Try temporarily disabling the widget by removing it from the screen, restarting the phone and adding it again.
- 🌐 Changing Region: In some cases, changing region in phone settings helps (Settings) → Additional settings → Try installing India or Singapore if your current region is experiencing server failures.
- 🔋 Power savings: Turn off Ultra-Energy Saving mode if activated. In this mode, most widgets are locked to save charge.
If the weather widget is gone after the system update, the launcher may have changed its structure. Try resetting the desktop settings (Settings → Applications → All Apps → System Launcher → Reset) This will return the icons to their factory appearance, but often solves the problems with the elements disappearing.
💡
90% of widget problems on Xiaomi are solved by checking background permits and geolocation access.
