Smartphone personalization is not just about changing screen wallpapers, but also creating a convenient environment for communication, where every call is instantly recognized by the image of the subscriber. Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices often face the need to quickly assign an avatar to a certain number, so as not to guess who is bothering at a critical moment. Modern shells MIUI and the new HyperOS offer flexible tools for managing contacts, but the algorithms of actions can differ from standard Android.
The process of installing an image may seem trivial, but the Chinese manufacturer’s ecosystem has its own nuances related to account synchronization and application access rights. Incorrect choice of source of a photo or file format sometimes leads to the fact that the image is displayed only on you, but not transmitted to the interlocutor, or disappears after a reboot. In this article, we will discuss in detail all available ways to attach a photo to a phone number.
We will explore methods both through the standard Contacts app and the system Gallery, and we will also discuss synchronization issues with Google account, which is critical for saving data when changing devices. Understanding these mechanisms will help you avoid losing personalized data and make the call process more comfortable and visually enjoyable.
Image Preparation and Format Requirements
Before you start the technical part of installing the avatar, you need to make sure that the original image meets the technical requirements of the system. Although modern smartphones automatically process most graphic files, using optimal parameters ensures that the image is correctly displayed in different interfaces: when you call, in the call list and in instant messengers.
The Android system that Xiaomi runs on prefers square images for contact avatars. If you upload a vertical or horizontal photo, the system will suggest cropping it, but the original quality can suffer if compressed strongly. The best way to use files in JPEG or PNG format is with a resolution of at least 500x500 pixels.
💡
Use close-up photos with a clear face – on a small screen, details may not be visible during the call, and the face will be unrecognizable.
It’s also worth considering that a round or square cutout in the interface can hide the angles of the image. So when choosing a photo, try to keep the key object (the person’s face) in the center of the frame, leaving small margins around the edges, this is especially true for devices with a bang or a cutout under the camera in the screen, which can overlap part of the image.
Installation of photos through the Contacts app
The most common and reliable way to assign an image to a subscriber is to use an embedded system application, which ensures that the photo is tied to the entry in the phone book, not just stored in the gallery.
It depends on the firmware version, but the general logic remains the same for all devices of the brand.
To start, open a standard app, which usually has an icon with a human silhouette and the caption “Contacts” or “Phone.” Find the list of the desired subscriber or search by name. After opening the contact card, look for the area at the top of the screen where the default displays the stub with the first letter of the name or the standard gray silhouette.
☑️ Installation algorithm through Contacts
Click on a pencil icon or the Change button (often located in the upper right corner or under the photo). In the editing menu that opens, you will see the option to add or change a photo. The system will suggest you choose the source: take a picture right now or choose from the gallery. After selecting the image, the framing tool will appear.
⚠️ Note: If you don't see the photo button when editing the contact, check if the entry is blocked. SIM-maps or social media without the right link, may have editing restrictions in the standard interface.
Use the framing frame to highlight the desired area of the face. Once confirmed, the system will save the changes. It is important to note that if the contact is synced with a Google account, the change may take some time to update on all devices where the login is made.
Adding an avatar through the Gallery
An alternative method that is often faster if you've just taken a picture or downloaded an image, which allows you to immediately assign a photo to a contact without having to search the phone book for a long time, and is especially useful when you need to quickly update an avatar for several people after a joint photo shoot.
Open the Gallery app and find the image you want. Click on it to open the full screen, then select the "More" button (usually three dots in the corner) or swipe up to view details. The action menu often features the "Appoint Contact" or "Appoint as a Contact Photo" option.
Once you select this feature, the system will suggest a contact list to search for, enter your subscriber's name and select it from the drop-down list, followed by the standard framing and saving procedure, which is good because you can visually see the full size of the photo before you tie it to the number.
Remember, when you assign a photo through a gallery, there is sometimes confusion with duplicate contacts. If you have a phone memory and a Google account with the same name and number, the system may ask which record to update. Always choose the one that is primary and syncable.
Working with duplicates and combining records
One of the common problems with photo installation is the presence of duplicate contacts. MIUI and HyperOS have a mechanism for combining multiple entries (for example, from different sources) into a single card, which is critically important that the photo is displayed correctly on any incoming calls.
If you have a photo installed, but it doesn't show when you call, it probably goes to a hidden duplicate of the record that doesn't have an image. To solve this problem, open the contact, click on the menu (three dots) and select "Combine" or "Connect" and the system will suggest finding similar records.
| Type of source | Priority of photo | Synchronization | Risk of loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Account | High-pitched | Automatic. | Minimum |
| Phone memory | Medium. | Absent. | High on discharge |
| SIM-map | Low. | Hand-held | Medium. |
| Social media | Depends on the settings. | periodic | Depends on the app. |
When you combine records, the system creates a single virtual card that aggregates all the data, including numbers, addresses and, importantly for us, photos. Once you combine, make sure that the image in the photo field is the image you want to see. If there's an old photo, replace it and it applies to all the associated numbers.
Why are contacts duplicated?
Synchronization and display on the call screen
Once a photo is installed, it is important to understand how it will behave in different use cases. Local storage of the image in the phone memory (Phone Storage) means that the photo will be visible only on that particular device. If the phone is lost or broken, it will be impossible to restore the avatars without manual reinstallation.
It is recommended to store contacts and their images in a Google account, for this purpose, when creating or editing a contact in the “Save to” or “Account” field, you must select your Gmail address, in which case the photo is uploaded to Google servers and automatically pulled up to any new smartphone when you log in to your account.
It's also worth checking the display settings. Sometimes users complain that the photo is there, but it doesn't stretch to the whole screen when you call. It depends on the theme (MIUI Themes). Some third-party themes ignore user avatars or display them in a small circle. Switching to a standard theme often solves the problem.
⚠️ Note: If you use third-party calling apps (like Truecaller or Google’s Dialer), they may have their own photo databases that overlap the phone’s system settings.
To check for sync, go to your Google account settings on your phone (Settings → Accounts & Sync → Google) and make sure the slider opposite the Contacts item is active. Forced Sync will update the data and upload new photos if they were added from another device.
Solution: Photos are not saved or are lost
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where after installing a photo on the contact in Xiaomi, it disappears after a while or does not save after clicking the “OK” button. Most often this is due to a lack of rights to read and write to the gallery, or with a crowded cache.
Try clearing the app cache. Go to Settings → Apps → All apps → Contacts → Memory and click Clear Cache. Don’t confuse it with Clear Data, as this can delete recent call history, although the contacts themselves should be saved when synchronized.
💡
The main reason for the disappearance of the photo is the conflict between the local copy of the contact and the cloud version, where the photo is missing, the solution is to edit the contact in the cloud account.
Another reason may be the image format: if the photo weighs too much (for example, a snapshot in the image). RAW or HEIC With an iPhone, the system may not be able to process it and ignore the installation request. JPEG before installation.
In rare cases, a smartphone reboot helps. Media indexing services could freeze, and a new photo simply wasn't added to the thumbnail database. Rebooting the device updates all system processes and often solves visual bugs.
