The bright screen of Xiaomi TV can cause discomfort when watching in the dark, lead to eye fatigue or even overheating of the matrix. OLED-screens (e.g., Mi) TV Q2 or Mi TV A Pro, where high brightness affects the pixel life, and in this article we will discuss all possible ways to reduce brightness, from standard settings to little-known functions that the manufacturer does not advertise.
It is important to understand that on different Xiaomi models (Mi TV 4S series, Redmi Smart TV X, Mi TV P1, etc.), the interface may differ, but the general logic of adjustment remains the same. If you do not find the right item on the menu, check the firmware version: in old builds (PatchWall below 3.0), some options are hidden. We will also tell you how to bypass the system limitations and adjust the brightness even if there is no adjustment slider in the menu.
1. Basic brightness setting via remote control
The most obvious way is to use standard controls. Xiaomiβs remote (Mi Remote or Redmi Remote) has two brightness buttons:
- π The Brightness button (usually indicated by a sun icon) is a direct access to the slider. Press it once, then use the keys. β/β In some firmware, the slider appears in the top panel of the screen.
- πΊ Settings button (cogs) β Display and sound β Brightness. You can set a value from 0 to 100, where 50 to 60 is the optimal balance for most scenarios.
If the Brightness button is not on the remote (relevant for simplified versions, for example, in Redmi Smart TV 32), use the combination:
- Press Menu (or Home on new remotes).
- Select Settings β Display β Brightness.
- Use β/β for precise settings.
β οΈ Note: On TVs with automatic brightness adjustment (Adaptive Brightness function), manual adjustment may be reset. β Display. β Autobrightness if you want a fixed value.
Image modes: how to choose the optimal profile
Xiaomi TVs have several image modes preset that automatically adjust brightness, contrast and color temperature. To reduce brightness without manual adjustment, switch to one of the following profiles:
| Regime. | Brightness level | For which scenarios is suitable | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard. | 60β70% | Watching movies during the day | Balance between brightness and naturalness of colors |
| Cinema. | 40β50% | Evening viewing, dark rooms | Warm hue, low brightness |
| Energy conservation | 30β40% | Background viewing, energy savings | It can degrade the detail of dark scenes. |
| Playing | 80β100% | For consoles (PS5, Xbox) | Maximum brightness, high contrast |
To change the regime:
- Open Settings β Display β Image mode.
- Choose Movies or Energy Savings to reduce brightness.
- Adjust additional settings if necessary (e.g. Local dimming for the OLED-model).
Hidden Opportunity: Some firmware (e.g. PatchWall 4.0+) has Read mode available, which reduces brightness to 20β30% and adds a warm filter. Activated via Settings β Special Features β Screen Modes.
π‘
If the picture becomes too dark after the change of mode, check the Gamma setting in the Display menu β Additional. 2.2 usually gives you a better balance.
3. Brightness adjustment via the Mi Home app
If the remote is lost or not working, you can reduce the brightness through the official Mi Home app (available for Android and iOS), which is also useful for remote control, for example, if the TV is mounted high on the wall.
Instructions:
- Connect your TV to the app (if not done before): open Mi Home, click + β TV β Xiaomi and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Once connected, select your Mi TV from the device list.
- Go to the Control tab β Display.
- Use the Brightness slider to adjust. In some versions of the app, the option is hidden behind the Additional button.
Limitations of the method:
- π Television and phone should be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- π± The application does not have access to image modes - only basic adjustment.
- π Changes can be reset after rebooting TV (depending on firmware).
β οΈ Warning: If the brightness has stopped adjusting after the Mi Home update, try untie and re-add the TV to the app.
4. Hidden settings for experienced users
Xiaomi Android TVs have an engineering menu where you can fine-tune screen settings, including driver-level brightness, which is suitable for models on Amlogic chips (such as Mi TV 4S 55) or MediaTek (Redmi Smart TV X55).
To open the engineering menu:
- Turn on the TV and go to the main screen.
- On the remote, consistently tap: Menu β 1 β 3 β 9 β Menu (for PatchWall 2.0β3.5) or Menu β 4 β 6 β Menu (for PatchWall 4.0+).
- The Factory Mode menu will open. Go to Picture β Backlight.
- Set a value from 10 (minimum) to 50 (average). Do not exceed 70 - this can lead to overheating of the backlight.
What can be set up in the engineering menu:
- π¦ Backlight β physical brightness of the backlight (the most effective parameter).
- π¨ Contrast β contrast (affects the perception of brightness).
- π‘οΈ Color Temperature β Color Temperature (warm colors appear less bright).
What happens if you set backlight to maximum?
After the changes, save the settings (Save or OK button) and restart the TV. If the image becomes unstable (flickering, stripes), reset to factory settings through Factory Reset in the same menu.
5. Automatic adjustment of brightness over time
The brightness schedule (or Night Mode in English firmware) allows you to set the brightness to automatically decrease at certain times, such as in the evening, which is useful for families with children or if you often fall asleep under the TV.
How to set up:
- Go to Settings β Display β Brightness schedule.
- Activate the option to Enable the schedule.
- Set start times (for example, 21:00) and end times (07:00).
- Set a target brightness level (30β40%).
- Turn on the Smooth Change option so that the transition is unnoticed.
Additional settings:
- π Night mode β adds a blue filter that reduces the strain on the eyes.
- π Adaptive brightness - adjusts the backlight by the light sensor (if it is in the model).
- π Exceptions β you can turn off automatic dimming for specific apps (e.g. YouTube or Netflix).
Make sure your TV is connected to the internet (to synchronize time)
Turn off the Game mode (it blocks automatic adjustment)
Make sure the date and time in the settings are correct.
Keep the current brightness profile (in case of reset)
-->
If the brightness schedule is not available, try updating your firmware to the latest version. In older builds (PatchWall 1.0-2.5), this feature is often hidden.
6. Alternative methods: if nothing works
In rare cases, standard brightness control methods may be blocked (for example, after a reset or failed update).
Method 1: Resetting image settings
- Open Settings β Support β Resetting settings.
- Select Reset Image Settings (not a full reset!).
- After the reboot, the brightness will return to factory values (70% in most models).
Method 2: Use of the ADB-Teams (for advanced users)
If you have experience with ADB, you can manually set the brightness through the command line:
- Enable USB Debugging in the Developer Settings β About TV β Build Number β Press 7 times, then go back to Settings β For Developers.
- Connect the TV to the PC on USB The command is: adb shell settings put system. screen_brightness 30 (where 30 β desired brightness 0 before 255).
Method 3: Physically darkening the screen
- πΌοΈ Use anti-reflective film with a matte surface (reduces brightness by 15-20%).
- π‘ Adjust the lighting in the room: add local light behind the TV (for example, LED-luminous).
β οΈ Attention: When in use ADB Do not set the brightness below 10 β this can cause the screen to flicker on the screen. OLED-models (e.g. Mi models) TV Q2 55").
π‘
If after all the manipulations the brightness remains high, check the settings. HDR display β Additional. HDR-The mode ignores manual brightness adjustment!
