Why the Emoji Keyboard Interferes and How to Turn It Off
The emoji on the Xiaomi Redmi keyboard can be annoying if you actively type, work with documents or just prefer a minimalist interface. By default, MIUI offers a separate tab with an emoji that takes up space on the screen and sometimes accidentally activates when typed. In this article, we will discuss all the working ways to disable it, from standard settings to radical solutions for advanced users.
Itβs important to understand that βdeletingβ the emoji keyboard on Redmi does not mean physically erasing system files (this requires root rights), but itβs about turning it off in the interface. Weβll look at options for the standard MIUI keyboard (Gboard from Google, if installed), as well as universal methods that work on all models from the Redmi Note 10 to Redmi 12.
If you use a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey or Fleksy), the algorithm will be different, we'll talk about this in a separate section, and first we'll figure out why emojis appear on the keyboard at all, and whether they can be permanently disabled without consequences for the system.
Method 1: Disabling emojis via MIUI keyboard settings
The easiest and safest method is to use the built-in MIUI options. It is suitable for most Redmi models (including the Redmi 9A, Redmi Note 11 Pro and later) and does not require superuser rights.
- Open any field to type text (such as a WhatsApp message or notes) to call the keyboard.
- Press the gear icon (βοΈ) in the upper right corner of the keyboard to go to its settings.
- Select Text Input or Keyboard Settings (name depends on the version of MIUI).
- Find the Emoji or Smiley and Stickers section and turn off the slider next to the Show the Emoji button option.
- Save the changes and restart the keyboard (just close and reopen the application for input).
If your MIUI version doesnβt have a separate emoji switch, try an alternative path:
- π± Go to Settings. β System and device β Language and input.
- π§ Select the Current Keyboard β Settings (or tap on the name of the keyboard).
- π Find the tab Additional and disable Emoji Offers.
βοΈ Preparing to turn off emojis
Important! On some firmware (e.g. MIUI 13 for Redmi K50), the emoji button can remain active even after shutting down, in which case resetting the keyboard to factory settings will help, read about this in the next section.
β οΈ Attention: After disabling the emoji through settings MIUI The smiley button will disappear only in the standard keyboard, and if you use Gboard or other apps, their settings will have to be changed separately.
Method 2: Reset keyboard settings to factory
If emojis continue to appear despite outages in settings, the cause may be a keyboard cache or update conflict, in which case the reset will help:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find the MIUI Keyboard (or Gboard if you use it) in the list.
- Slip on the Storage and select Clear Cache and Clear Data.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
Once reset, the keyboard will return to factory settings and the emoji button will disappear, but all user dictionaries and input settings (such as auto-replace) will also reset, and to avoid this, you can try updating the keyboard via Google Play (if it is Gboard) or reinstall it.
| Action. | The result | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Clearing the cache | Remove temporary data but saves settings | All Redmi models |
| Data resetting | Remove all keyboard settings (including emoji) | MIUI 12 and newer |
| Reinstallation of Gboard | Returns the keyboard to factory condition | Only for Gboard. |
What if the reset didn't help?
Method 3: Turn off the emoji in Gboard (if installed)
Many Xiaomi Redmi users are replacing the standard keyboard with Googleβs Gboard, in which case the algorithm is different:
- Open any input field and call Gboard.
- Put it on the gear badge (βοΈ) keyboard.
- Select Settings β Preferences.
- Turn off the option to Show the Emoji button.
- Return to Settings β Text input and turn off Emoji Offers.
If the emoji button is still visible, try:
- π Update Gboard to the latest version on Google Play.
- π± Reinstall the application (remove and reinstall).
- π§ Enable Text Only in Gboard Settings (if available).
π‘
If you often type in multiple languages but donβt want to see emojis, you can turn them off separately for each language in Gboard. Go to Settings β Languages β [select language] β Layout and uncheck Emoji.
Method 4: Radical solution β Delete system files (requires root)
If you're willing to go to extreme lengths and you have root rights, you can completely remove emoji files from the system, which is irreversible and can cause failures if done incorrectly, and only use it if other methods have failed.
Instructions for experienced users:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer or Solid Explorer).
- Go to /system/usr/share/emoji/ or /system/font/ (depending on the MIUI version).
- Find files with the.ttf or.xml extension associated with emojis (e.g. NotoColorEmoji.ttf).
- Rename them by adding.bak at the end (e.g. NotoColorEmoji.ttf.bak).
- Reboot the phone.
After that, the emoji will disappear from the system, but may stop showing in messages (for example, on Telegram or WhatsApp). To return everything back, just delete the.bak from the file name.
β οΈ Warning: Deleting system files without a backup can cause a cyclical phone reboot. Before actions, back up through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
What to do if the emojis are missing but returned after the MIUI update
One of the frustrating features of MIUI is resetting custom settings after major updates. If the emoji keyboard reappears after the update, try:
- π Repeat Method 1 or Method 2 (depending on the keyboard).
- π΅ Turn off automatic Gboard updates in Google Play (if the problem is related to it).
- π§ Install an alternative keyboard (such as AnySoftKeyboard) where emojis are permanently disabled.
If the update MIUI came with a new launcher or shell, you may need to reset the keyboard settings (see Method 2). MIUI, But it's risky and requires unlocking the bootloader.

After updating MIUI, always check the keyboard settings - they are often reset. It is better to take a screenshot of the working settings in advance.
Alternative keyboards without emojis for Xiaomi Redmi
If standard methods don't work, it's easier to install a keyboard where emojis are turned off by default. Here are the best options for Redmi:
| keyboard | Advantages | How to turn off emojis |
|---|---|---|
| AnySoftKeyboard | Minimalist design, gesture support | Settings β Appearance β Hide emoji |
| Fleksy | Quick entry, themes of design | Settings β Extensions β Disable emojis |
| Simple Keyboard | No advertising, open source | Emojis are missing by default |
To install an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Go to Settings β System and Device β Language and Enter.
- Activate the new keyboard and set it by default.
- Turn off the old keyboard (such as the MIUI Keyboard or Gboard).
The advantage of this method is that there is no emoji without risk to the system, but some functions (such as voice input) may work differently than in a standard keyboard.
