Why the font on Redmi 9 became bold and how to fix it
Owners of Xiaomi Redmi 9 often face a problem when the text on the screen suddenly becomes too thick - as if someone has turned on the mode for the visually impaired. The reasons can vary from accidental changes in settings to failures after the MIUI update. 80% of the time the problem is solved in 2 minutes through standard settings, but sometimes deeper manipulation is required.
Fat font not only spoils the appearance of the interface, but also reduces the amount of information displayed on the screen. For example, in messengers, messages can be cropped, and in the browser β to increase the scale of pages. In this article, we will discuss all the working ways to return the font to normal, including little-known tricks for MIUI 12-14.
Important: if bold font appeared after a phone fell or moisture hit, the problem may be hardware (damage to the display plume), in which case software methods will not help - you need a diagnosis in the service center.
Method 1: Checking the basic font settings
Let's start with the obvious, the standard display parameters for text. In Redmi 9, this is the responsibility of Settings β Display β Text Size and Display. Here's what you need to do:
- Open the settings (the gear icon on the home screen or in the application menu).
- Go to Display β Text Size and Display.
- Check the font size slider β it should stand on the average value (usually the second mark on the left).
- Below, find the Font Style option and make sure you choose either the default or Mi Sans option (without the βBoldβ or βHeavyβ prefixes).
If this is OK, but the font is still bold, move on to the next one, and sometimes the problem is with settings for special features that are accidentally activated.
Method 2: Disconnecting the regime for the visually impaired
MIUI has a hidden mode called Enlarged Text, which automatically makes the font bolder and larger, and it can turn on when you update the system or when you connect your phone to your TV via Miracast, to turn it off:
- Go to Settings. β Special facilities.
- Choose a Vision. β Enlarged text.
- Turn off the slider at the top of the screen.
- Restart your phone (required!) to make the changes effective.
If this item is not on your menu, it means that the mode is not activated. However, in some of the firmwares of Redmi 9 (especially on MIUI 12.5), this option is hidden deeper.
Settings β Additional β Special features β Visibility settings β Font sizeNote: On some custom firmware (e.g. Xiaomi.eu), this mode may be called βHigh Contrast Textβ and may be in the βColor and Contrastβ section.
Method 3: Reset display settings (without data loss)
If previous methods didn't work, try resetting the screen to factory settings, which won't affect your files or apps, but will return all display settings to default values.
Make sure your phone is at least 30% charged.
Close all applications (swipe up in the multitasking menu)
Remember the current brightness and autoturn settings (they will have to be reconfigured)-->
- Open Settings β System β Resetting settings.
- Choose Reset Display Settings (not to be confused with a full reset!).
- Confirm the action with a password or pattern lock.
- After rebooting, check the font β it should return to normal thickness.
This method helps in 60% of cases when bold appeared after the MIUI update. If the problem persists, move on to more advanced solutions.
β οΈ Warning: Don't confuse "Reset Display Settings" with "Reset All Settings" or "Reset Factory Settings." The latter two options will delete all your data from your phone!
Method 4: Change the developer settings (for power users)
There are hidden settings in the developer menu that affect the rendering of fonts. If you previously activated this mode (for example, to overclock the processor or debug over USB), bold text may have appeared due to the changed settings. Here's how to return them:
First, turn on the developer menu (if it is disabled):
- Go to Settings. β The phone.
- Find the MIUI version string and tap it 7 times in a row.
- Enter your phone password if necessary.
Now go to Settings β Additional β For developers and find the following options:
| Parameter | Recommended value | What happens if you change it? |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum width scale | 411dpi (default) | The change will lead to distortion of fonts and interface elements |
| Disable hardware overlays | Off. | Including can cause artifacts when rendering text |
| Forced. GPU-rendering | Off. | Inclusion speeds up graphics, but sometimes breaks font display |
| The scale of window animation | 1x | It does not directly affect the font, but may affect rendering. |
When you change, make sure to restart your phone. If the bold is gone, you've got one of these parameters in the problem. If you don't, read on.

Before you change the developer settings, take a screenshot of your current settings, which will help you get it back if something goes wrong.
Method 5: Installation of a third-party launcher or fonts
If the system methods didn't work, you can get around the problem with third-party applications, which doesn't eliminate the cause, but it does return the normal display of text.
Option 1: Custom font launcher
Install an alternative launcher, such as Nova Launcher or Microsoft Launcher, which allows you to choose the style of the font regardless of the system settings:
- π₯ Download Nova Launcher from Google Play.
- π§ Open the launcher settings (Long press on the desktop) β Settings).
- π¨ Go to the Appearance. β Font and choose any style without marking "Bold".
- π Restart your phone to apply changes.
Option 2: Application for font replacement
There are specialized tools for MIUI, like iFont or FontFix, that replace the system fonts with custom fonts.
- Download iFont from Google Play.
- Select any font without the "Bold" or "Black" mark (e.g. Roboto Regular).
- Click Install and follow the instructions (permissions required).
- Reboot the phone.
β οΈ Note: Installing third-party fonts can cause conflicts with system applications (such as Mi Browser or Mi Video.
Method 6: Flashing the phone (extreme case)
If none of these methods worked, the problem could be the corrupted system files, in which case the only thing that would help is to flash the phone, which is a radical method, but it's guaranteed to bring back all the settings to the factory.
You'll need:
- π» Computer with Mi Flash Tool installed.
- π₯ Official firmware for Redmi 9 (you can download on the official website of Xiaomi).
- π Cable USB (preferably original).
- β‘ Charging the phone at least 50%.
Step-by-step:
Detailed instructions for flashing
Important: Firmware will delete all data from the phone. Pre-backup through Settings β Google β Backup or Mi Cloud.

Firmware reflashing is the last chance to get back to normal font if all other methods have failed. Use only official firmware from Xiaomi's site to avoid security issues.
