How to remove the protection of changing the desktop on Xiaomi

Xiaomi smartphone owners often face a situation where the familiar interface suddenly stops responding to attempts to move shortcuts. You try to drag an app icon or widget, and the screen simply does not allow you to do this, ignoring your swipes. This is not a system failure and not a touchscreen freeze, but an activated layout lock built into the MIUI shell to protect against accidental changes.

This feature is useful for parents whose children like to “fix” the menu, or for those who appreciate perfect visual order. However, for ordinary users, this protection often becomes an obstacle to personalizing the gadget for their needs. In this article, we will discuss all the ways to remove the lock and regain full control of the desktop.

What is a block layout in MIUI

A feature popularly called “desktop protection,” Xiaomi’s official documentation calls “Model Lock,” a software limiter that prevents the system from repositioning interface elements. When this mode is active, you can run applications, but you can’t move them, delete folders, or add new widgets.

The developers of MIUI have implemented this mechanism to prevent random changes in the structure of the menu. The system algorithm simply ignores the commands Drag-and-Drop if it sees an active protection flag, and this is especially true for budget models, where a random touch could knock down the settings.

It is important to understand the difference between a full screen lock and a layout lock: the first protects data from outsiders with a password, the second protects only the visual structure, disabling protection does not affect the security of your personal data or access to banking applications.

Search for settings through the main menu

The easiest and most reliable way to remove the constraint is to use the standard way through system settings. MIUI may vary slightly from one version to another, but the logic remains the same. You need to go to the section that deals with the appearance and organization of the space.
