How to permanently remove pop-up notifications on Xiaomi: system, advertising and from applications

Pop-up notifications on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones can annoy even the most patient users. They appear at the most inopportune moment: during games, watching videos or important calls. Most often, these are ads from MIUI, system alerts for updates, tips on using a device or spam messages from installed applications. In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to turn them off, from basic settings to hidden firmware functions.

Compounding the problem, Xiaomi is actively integrating advertising modules and analytics services into its shell. Even after resetting to factory pop-up banners, pop-up banners can return in a few days. We tested all methods on current versions of MIUI 14/15 (including global and Chinese builds), and selected only those that work stably. If you are ready to get rid of intrusive alerts once and for all, read on.

1. disable MIUI system notifications

The first step is to block standard alerts from the MIUI shell.

4. Go back and repeat the steps for Security, Cleaner, and Mi Video apps – they often send unnecessary alerts too.

If the MIUI System app is not listed, try searching for it in the settings (the magnifier icon in the upper right corner).

On some models (such as Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12), the path may be slightly different due to customization of the firmware for a specific region. If you do not find the right item, check the version of MIUI in Settings → About phone and update the system to the latest stable build.

2. Blocking Advertising in Notifications

Xiaomi is known for embedding ads even in system menus, pop-up banners offering apps, Mi Store promotions or Mi Cloud ads are not just annoying, but also a potential privacy threat to remove:

Method 1: Through the MIUI settings

• 🔧 Open the Settings. → Memory. → Cleaning settings.
• 🚫 Disable the Recommendations option (or Personalized Recommendations in new versions).
• 🔍 Back to Settings → Additionally. → Special facilities → Advertising Notifications and Deactivate All Sliders.

Method 2: Using Security (Security)

1. Launch the Security app (shield icon).
2. Go to Settings. → Advertising.
3. Turn off Personalized Ads and Advertising Notices.
4. In the same menu, click Reset Advertising ID – this will reduce the number of targeted ads.

Chinese firmware (for example, Xiaomi) 12S Ultra for the domestic market) advertising is much more, and it is more difficult to disable through standard settings, in which case you will need to install global firmware or use the Internet. ADB-Teams (we will talk about it below).

3. Disabling notifications from applications

Even after the system alerts are blocked, notifications from third-party apps (such as Facebook, AliExpress or games) will continue to appear.

Mass blackout:

1. Press any notification in the curtain and swipe it left/right (depending on the MIUI version).
2. Click Settings (cog icon) → Disable notifications.
3. To completely disable, select Important and prioritize Low or Disabled.

Manual setting for each application:

• 📱 Go to Settings. → Annexes → Application management.
• 🔍 Select the app you want (such as Instagram or Wildberries).
• 🔔 Press Notifications and turn off all switches.
• 🚫 For particularly intrusive applications (for example, OLH or Avito), additionally prohibit Auto Run and Show over other windows.

Some apps (such as messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram) ignore system settings and continue to send notifications.

If standard methods don't work, you'll have to use ADB, which is a debugging tool that allows you to disable system notifications at the firmware level.

Instructions:

1. Install. ADB-PC drivers.
2. Turn on the smartphone Developer Mode (7 times click on the MIUI version in Settings → About phone).
3. Activate Debugging by USB in Settings → Additional → For developers.
4. Connect your phone to your PC and execute in the command line:

5.Use of third-party apps to block notifications

To install these applications:

1. Download APK from official sources (for example, APKMirror).
2. Allow installation from unknown sources in Settings → Applications → Special Access → Install unknown applications.
3. Launch the application and set up filters to lock.

Note: Some antiviruses (such as Avast or Dr.Web) may block these utilities as “potentially dangerous.” Add them to exceptions or temporarily disable protection during setup.

6. Resetting settings and flashing as a last resort

If neither of these methods worked, there are two radical solutions: factory reset or custom firmware. Let's look at both.

Reset to factory settings:

1. Make a backup of the data through Settings → About Phone → Backup.
2. Go to Settings → About the phone → Reset settings.
3. Choose to erase all data and confirm the action.

After discharge:

• 🔄 Do not restore data from backup – this can return spam notifications.

Install custom firmware (for example, LineageOS or Pixel Experience):

Note: on new Xiaomi models (e.g. Xiaomi 14 or Redmi K70), unlocking the bootloader can lead to hardware binding of the Mi Account. In this case, the smartphone will require entering a login / password even after reset. Make sure you remember the login details!

7.Prevention: How to prevent notifications from returning

Even after a successful shutdown, pop-up notifications can return to avoid:

• 📵 Use Developer Mode to limit background activity of apps:
